in Fashion, The Personal Shopper (TPS)

Our daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices. We begin the week in splurge mode, with our most expensive suggestions, and wind our way to Friday, where a less expensive item of clothing might be just what you need to make it to the weekend.

Couture Candy is having a one-day sale, so we thought we’d check it out — it is currently 30% off all orders (with a few exceptions). We lurve this short sleeve chiffon sweater from Qi — the bloused look of the sheer silk strikes us as a perfect compliment to a serious navy or brown suit. We’d wear it with a long, opera-length necklace — perhaps a pendant. Currently $79; today that comes to $55 or so. The free 2-day shipping doesn’t hurt, either. I’d like to hear thoughts on whether sheer or somewhat-sheer tops (even with camisole underneath, camisole is visible) are ever appropriate for the office?

Not appropriate. Not even appropriate under a suit or on a casual Friday.

it seems like if you’re going to wear this to the office, you can never remove your jacket.

I’d say never THIS sheer – in my office, the thin j.crew cashmere (summerweight stuff) with a cami underneath is pretty common (you can tell the woman has a camisole on, but it’s a much fainter outline than in this top), or for a gauzy blouse, people wear a short-sleeved sweater / deep v-neck sweater over it.

This top is cute for going out, but if I need to be dressed up enough to be in a jacket, I’d need a more formal shirt underneath… and I don’t think a shirt that requires a strapless bra is ever office-appropriate.

Agreed–not appropriate for work, even under a suit. But very cute for going out!
