in Business Etiquette, Fashion, Polls, The Personal Shopper (TPS)

Our daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices. We begin the week in splurge mode, with our most expensive suggestions, and wind our way to Friday, where a less expensive item of clothing might be just what you need to make it to the weekend.

We’re heading into the season where you should be able to get some killer deals on coats, and thus far ShopBop is winning the race — massive markdowns up to 70% off. Today, we like this empire coat from Shoshanna. While it’s only a midweight jersey, you can wear it in both the fall and the spring (both with trousers to work and jeans on the weekend). We lurve the chevron detail on the pockets, sleeves, and collar. Was $440, now $220 at ShopBop (NOT a final sale). Shoshanna Stitch Detail Empire Coat

Oy, am I the only one who thinks this looks like a maternity coat?

I think it’s really cute, and I like the empire style generally – but I have 3 friends in different cities who, while wearing empire cut tops or dresses, have each been asked by total strangers when they were due. Horrible. People see the empire cut and just assume it’s for hiding a big belly.

this coat works best on a tall & straight body type, definitely not for a well-endowed woman.

the added volume under the empire line is what makes it look maternity, supposedly giving extra room for a growing belly.

the empire line has to nip in at the waist and the torso must continue to outline the silhouette of the wearer. if a woman has a full bust, a well designed empire line can make her look magically slimmer.
