i find it perpetually amazing that so many people don’t know to cut open the X on jacket, coat, and skirt vents, so i’m glad you are re-emphasizing this. the judge i externed for would always comment once in chambers if she saw it.

but ripping a pocket seam with your hand is a bad idea because you can tear the fabric, particularly with lighter weight fabrics like silk. usually, the seam won’t cover the entire pocket, so at the top or bottom, there will be a place you can stick your finger in. if you work the thread loose, kinda like unlacing a corset for those of us who have been bridesmaids (open up the gap, unlace the threads now loosened, repeat), then the thread comes out much more cleanly with no danger of fabric ripping. it might sound like a lot of effort but it is easily done on a subway or (longer) elevator ride.

I’ve seen recommendations for pear shaped women to sew pockets shut to avoid the ugly gapping, so I tend to keep the pockets sewn.
