Wednesday’s TPS Report: Lauren by Ralph Lauren Amelie Short Sleeve Knit Dress

by C September 23, 2009 Fashion

Our daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices.
dressFor today’s TPS we’re going to suggest this lovely sweater dress from Ralph Lauren. We like the silk/cashmere blend, as well as the ruching detail on the sleeves. It actually seems like a dress that would look great with a contrasting long-sleeved turtleneck beneath it, as well as on its own. We’d wear it with a long necklace (and definitely a slip beneath it). It’s $140 at macys.com, available in sizes XS-XL, in both black and gray. Lauren by Ralph Lauren Amelie Short Sleeve Knit Dress

Open Thread: Let’s Talk Tech

by C September 22, 2009 Fashion

Maybe this is a boring subject, but we’re obviously a bit on the techy-side, so we’re curious: what technology do you carry with you on a daily basis? How does it affect which purse you carry? Do you have any fun tech stories (e.g., trying to figure out how to carry your Blackberry while at a black-tie gala)? What devices do you love? What do you wish were different? What are your questions about the other devices?

Initial thoughts on our own questions, after the jump…

  • At one point this author carried a Blackberry (provided by work and using the T-Mobile network), a Sprint cell phone, a Palm Pilot, and an iPod. (I *think* that was it.) When I got the BB it definitely did affect which purse I carried — a lot of the ones I already owned were smaller and already at capacity, so (oh noes!) I had to go buy new bags. I’ve since combined the cell phone and Palm Pilot via the (fairly unfashionable) Treo 755p, primarily because the iPhone wasn’t available for Sprint — and annoyingly, my Treo doesn’t fit in the convenient “technology pocket” that so many bags offer these days.
  • In terms of “fun tech stories” it isn’t really work-related, but hey: the alarm on my Treo went off during my wedding ceremony. I’m one of those annoying sorts who likes to schedule things very far in advance, and so as soon as we set the date and time for the wedding I thought it was cute to schedule it in my Palm Pilot. I neglected to turn off the alarm function, for which the default setting has the alarm going off 5 minutes before scheduled events, repeating every five minutes unless someone stops it. So, cut to the wedding day, when I was worried guests would be calling me with transportation/direction difficulties — so I gave the Treo to my brother (and man of honor) to hold. Sure enough… five minutes into the ceremony the Treo went off, and everyone heard it. I knew what it was, immediately, and started to laugh; I’m told by my guests that they all started looking around trying to determine who the @#$ was who’d left their cellphone on. My brother held the Treo high for all to see — “It’s hers — and it says WEDDING!!” After everyone stopped laughing we went back to the ceremony.
  • Everyone I know seems to love their iPhone, and as soon as it’s offered for Sprint I can’t wait to check it out. For those of you who’ve used both the Palm and the iPhone, how does it compare? Which applications are your favorite?

Tuesday’s TPS Report: Charles by Charles David’s Melange Pump

by C September 22, 2009 Fashion

Our daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices.
Women's shoes/bags: Charles by Charles David Melange - Dark brown
Happy first day of fall! We’re liking these simple but interesting 3″ pumps from Charles by Charles David — the three different colors of brown make it sure to match something you own that is brown, and we like the layered look of the leather. It’s available in navy, as well, in sizes 5-10 at Piperlime, for $115. (There are pretty good sales going on at Piperlime, anyway — use code TREAT through 9/23 to take 20% off all shoes and handbags; if you’re buying from Piperlime and another store in the Gap family you can get free shipping with code SHIPPL. Gap also has a “take 20% off through 9/25″ code, EXTRA20.) Women’s shoes/bags: Charles by Charles David Melange – Dark brown

Reader mail: Can I take the leftovers from my business lunch?

by C September 21, 2009 Business Etiquette

Today’s reader mail wonders whether a doggy bag is ever appropriate…

I was wondering if it’s ever appropriate to get leftovers from business lunches or dinners wrapped up to go. The portion sizes at restaurants can be so large, and I hate having food go to waste (especially food from eating out!) but I am fairly junior and it may seem a bit much (as in grabby or greedy). Thoughts?

We agree, leaving leftover food is wasteful. However, we must caution against asking for a doggy bag (even if the restaurant will shape it into an amusing animal). You’re right, it does sound slightly grabby or greedy — particularly because it’s entirely possible to ascertain beforehand if the restaurant where you’re dining is one that believes in large portions, such as by looking around the room or asking the waiter — which means that taking leftovers might leave the impression that you either a) ordered for dinner as well as lunch, or b) just are not very observant. Neither are good things for the business lunch.

Instead, we would say that the business lunch is all about precision ordering: if you know you’re not very hungry or just can’t eat large portions, look to the appetizer/salad sections of the menu. There’s nothing wrong with getting an appetizer or two instead of a main meal, or, if everyone else at the table is getting appetizers, ordering a plain green salad as yours. If this is really a problem, we’d advise you to avoid carbs at lunch — no pasta or potatoes — as those can be very filling, at least initially, and instead stick to vegetables, which are less filling, more nutritious, and a good use of opportunity to have someone else cook for you. (If you’re anything like us, all fresh veggies you buy go bad before you have a chance to eat them because you’re always at work, and veggie dishes requiring lots of work like cutting/chopping/cleaning just don’t get prepared that often.) We would also say that there’s no harm in being like Sally and asking for substitutions such as a green salad or fruit salad instead of potatoes, or to ask for creamy, filling sauces on the side.

If you just can’t finish your meal, don’t make a big fuss about it or comment about it — just put your fork and knife together on the right-hand side of the plate, and continue with the conversation. (Leave your napkin in your lap until everyone is getting up to go.)

Readers, any thoughts? Do you agree that leftovers should not be taken from a business lunch?

Splurge Monday’s TPS Report: Trina Turk ‘Westcott’ Skirt

by C September 21, 2009 Fashion

Our daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices.
We’re loving the tweeds at the moment, for some reason, including this lovely multi-colored skirt from Trina Turk. Normally, rainbow-colored items are totally inappropriate, but the chunky tweed has a way of muting the reds, blues, greens, and yellows speckled throughout this skirt; also, the vaguely vertical pattern seems incredibly flattering. The 23″ skirt is $218 at Nordstrom’s, in sizes 0-12. Trina Turk ‘Westcott’ Skirt
