Deal Alert!

by C December 17, 2009 Fashion

We’re going to be a bit pressed for time today, so we may skip our afternoon post and instead point you to some great deals we’ve found lately. There seem to be a lot going on, so post more in the comments if you’ve found them…
First, the Endless sale has been continued (it was supposed to end on Tuesday). It’s kind of tricky, so here are our tips for searching the site:
- Go to the website and type in the code “Extra40Off” in the search field.
- From there, you can either a) further limit to “Sale and Clearance” (our suggested tip if you’re on a budget) or proceed directly to b) shop by brands you like. We find it easier to toggle through the site that way, but maybe that’s just us.
- Once you find something you like, make sure the product page (near the price) has something that says “Special Offer Available!” — that’s how you know it’s 40% off. The deal won’t actually show up until you’re at the last step of the checkout process (but you can still delete things if you want to.)
For example, the Kate Spade nylon tote above (Kate Spade Quilted Poppy Fields Maryanne Tote,Cherry) was $325, now about $145 with the sale. TONS of Bally, Botkier, Bulga, Cole Haan, Kate Spade, LeSportsac, and Treesje bags. (Anyone who does not have our preferred travel bag, the Lesportsac Large Weekender, can make out like a bandit at the sale. Trust us, these things are great for stuffing into that front compartment of your rolling bag, and then using as a carry-on bag on your way home to transport all the goodies you’ve picked up on your trip or vacation.)

Second, Banana Republic has 40% off today with code BBCY91N3DTCQ. We’re still trying to figure out if that’s a unique code (it was sent to us by a friend) or if that’s a good-for-everything code — we didn’t receive an e-mail notification from Banana today about the sale, for some reason. (Booo.)

Finally, the Barney’s sale has hit the 60% off mark. We got some great pieces at this sale last year (including the cashmere sweater we’re wearing today).

Like we said, this is in no way a complete survey of the sales out there — just some good ones we’ve heard about. Let us know if you’ve heard of other good ones — seems like the sales season is starting to get underway. (Yay!)

Thursday’s TPS Report: Rollin Skirt

by C December 17, 2009 Fashion

Our daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices.
French Connection is having a ton of great sales right now, including this lovely gray tulip skirt. For some reason, we’re seeing it with royal blue — perhaps a blouse or a thin knit — perhaps even a bodysuit and a high-waisted belt. Was $168, now $89, available in sizes 0 and 4-12 (sorry, size 2s). rollin skirt

Suit of the Week

by C December 16, 2009 Fashion

For busy working women, the suit is often the easiest outfit to throw on in the morning. In general, this feature is not about interview suits, which should be as classic and basic as you get — instead, this feature is about the slightly different suit that is fashionable, yet professional.

Alrighty — the gods are not smiling on us today, as this is the third suit we’ve tried to write up. (We realized we promised no more purple suits like this one, and we got halfway through the write-up on this one before we realized it was sold out. (We had a whole thing about how plotting to overthrow the universe is a Good in this career environment – shows initiative! — and how everyone should start working on their diabolical laughs.)) But. OK. For reals, we are liking this black suit from Piazza Sempione. It’s your classic stretch wool black suit — the kind of thing you can buy now and pull out as the “good” suit for years to come. It’s even on sale at Saks. The jacket (Piazza Sempione Stretch Wool Jacket) was $995, now $597, and the skirt (Piazza Sempione Stretch Wool Pleated Skirt) was $595, now $357.

Wednesday’s TPS Report: Antonio Melani “Clarissa” Cowlneck Sweater

    by C December 16, 2009 Fashion

Our daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices.
We’re really liking this merino wool cowlneck from Antonio Melani — particularly the slight dolman sleeves and the way you can wear the neckline multiple ways (lower, like a boatneck; higher, like a scooped cowl; or wider, almost off-the-shoulder). It seems versatile and classic at the same time, and we love the range of colors it comes in: ivory (pictured), raisin, moss, espresso, eclipse, and black. It’s $119 at Dillards, available in sizes XS-L. Antonio Melani “Clarissa” Cowlneck Sweater

Reader mail: How to buy off-season suits…

    by C December 15, 2009 Fashion

Today’s reader mail has to do with off-season clothing…

Do you have suggestions for places to get an off-season suit? Have to prep for an interview in SoCal in January…

As the kids say, srsly? Man, do we have suggestions for you. Off-season is the best time to shop for clothes, in our opinion. First, hit up any outlet stores near you — we’ve had great success with the Chelsea Premium Outlets (Leesburg, Woodbury, etc.) — it’s a chain with centers located around America, so check the website to see if any are near you. If you go, you may want to check out the discount racks — fall clothes will probably be prominently featured at the moment, meaning the more summery clothes will have moved to the discount racks. (Pictured: Kasper 2 Button Black Tonal Stripe Pantsuit, available at SmartBargains.com for $99 (was $240), available in sizes 8-18).

The trick here is not to get a “seasonal” suit (think a jewel-toned tweed in the fall, or a white/pastel linen in the summer) but rather a seasonless suit. Some brands “pitch” their suits as seasonless — J.Crew, Anne Klein — but really, anything will do so long as it doesn’t smack of a season that is not the one you’re in. For example, the Kasper pantsuit above is polyester, and on a cold, windy day you’d freeze in it — so practically speaking, it is a “seasonal” suit. But from a visual perspective it just looks like a black suit, so you’re fine to wear it on your interview. At least, that’s our $.02.

Readers, what say you? Which brands of seasonless suiting do you prefer? Where do you buy your off-season clothes?
