Splurge Monday’s TPS Report: Floral Kiki Dress

in Fashion, The Personal Shopper (TPS), Wear to Work

Our daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices.

We’re loving this floral print dress from Trina Turk today — the big print that makes it almost abstract, the splash of lime here and there — love it.  We’d wear it with skin-toned shoes, pearls, and perhaps a shrunken blazer.  It’s $348 at CUSP (which appears to be a Neiman Marcus store) in sizes 0-10. Oooh, I don’t know if I could pull this off, but I do love it. Makes me think of spring!

The “ring hardware at mock wrap waist” makes me think of those little t-shirt rings that were popular in the 80s.

It looks very short – is it just me?

I always have a hard time deciding whether anything is short or not until I try it on. Many things that are above the knee on the model need to be shortened for me (I’m a very average almost 5’6″). So yeah, it looks a little short on her, but I’d wait and see.

I agree that it’s virtually impossible to tell from a picture on a model whether a skirt/dress will be too short. C posted a DVF suit a couple of weeks ago that was gorgeous but the high-waisted skirt looked like an unprofessionally-short micro-mini on the model. I thought it was beautiful and ordered it to try it anyway and the skirt in the size 12 was right at the knee for me (I’m 5’8″). I’m glad I gave it a chance.

I wish all online retailers gave the length of skirts and dresses in the description. It would take out all of the “is it or isn’t it too short” guesswork!

jr,

Was the suit navy with pinstripes? I was considering purchasing that suit, but thought the skirt was too short.

Thanks,
A

Navy, but no pinstripes. C posted it on 2/3. Looks like Saks may have since revised the length description of the skirt.

Not sure I like this particular dress, but I am liking the splashes of lime green with the navy and white. I have a lime green sweater that I never wear and this gives me some inspiration on how to mix it with other items in my closet.

And Trina Turk does not go over a size 12? Booooo!!

Trina Turk is sized fairly generously – a 14/16 might be able to get into a Trina Turk 12.

Okay…so cute, but totally out of my price range. Plus…stopping at size 10 is ridiculous.

I agree.

I. LOVE. THIS. But size and price make it a no for me…. but I will have dreams about it :)

Love, love, love it. Hope it hits the sale rack at Nordstrom.

Off-topic question here…I’m having a very hard time finding camisoles that don’t ride up around my waist and higher. I’m small-chested and small-waisted, but I have a curvier rear and hips. I have a bunch of camis from the Banana outlet that fit me well up top and when I first put them on but ride up within a few minutes. I also have a couple of stretch cotton ones from Old Navy that fit better but because of the lace on the top they aren’t good for wearing under low-cut or slightly sheer tops and dresses. Can anyone recommend some good, preferably affordable (I’m still in law school) brands for a lean pear-shaped woman?

I have the exact same problem…seriously hourglass measurements (plus a really long torso)! The only solution I have ever found (and it’s not really a great one), were a couple of very cheap camis that I got at Gordman’s I believe. They are not great quality and a little on the casual side but they are really long and when tucked in they do not come untucked. I would love to find a more presentable solution if anyone has one!

you probably want to get long camisoles so you can tuck them in. I have wide hips and a small waist and things tend to bunch up around my middle, but I get long camisoles, I just tuck them in and belt them so they stay put. I got mine at Nordstrom Rack, I am not sure if they still carry them. They last forever!

Me too I’m smaller on top than in the hips, such a pain when buying tops of all sorts. Sometimes this works: if it’s a cami that never shows, you can cut a slit, one on each side. Maybe 2 inches up, or whatever you need. Hand-hem the slits or not, depending on if the fabric is likely to unravel in the wash.

I really like Ann Taylor camisoles. They stay tucked in (for me), have adjustable straps, come in a lot of different colors, and are not expensive.

zee February 22, 2010 at 5:14 pm

Same problem. Do not try camis from the Limited. They ride like nobody’s business (but have an alluring snugness/seamless construction).

I have this problem, too. I like the Ann Taylor camisoles, as a previous commenter suggested. They’re cut slightly wider than the BR camis that I’ve tried, but are still narrow enough to lay flat under sweaters, wrap dresses, etc.

I just bought a couple of the Ultimate Cami camisoles from Target, on sale for $6/ea. Very basic, no lace — but long and stretchy. They may work for you b/c of that length.

Love it, almost ordered it, but with shipping and tax it comes to over $400.

Plus, the only sizes available now are 2, 8 and 10.

PSA Bloomingdales has it too.

Sigh, so in love. But alas, I am a poor law student who wears a size 14.

I’m so excited to have found this website! I am a 36-year-old attorney working for a conservative law firm in a large urban area. I love reading about fashion, but so much of what’s out there doesn’t apply to my lifestyle. This is such a great place!

I splurged on the Trina Turk dress — love it for Spring. Looks like it sold out already!

Cute dress, but not for work in any season or any place.

Gorgeous! But, alas, it doesn’t fit the law student budget.

Love the dress. And if you wear Spanx every day like I do, you always have something tight and fitted in which to tuck your camisole!

CUSP is a Neiman Marcus concept. You can use your NM card.

This dress is enough of an inducement to go back on my diet. . . .

As far as camisoles: For use with wrap dresses, I shorten camisoles so that they end a few inches below my bra strap. Since I always wash camisoles in a lingerie bag, I don’t need to hem them — just snip and go. I wish more companies made bras that function like camisoles. I found one at Neiman’s once, but it was crazy expensive and too lacy. I also tried on the world’s greatest tank top at Betsy Fisher once. It didn’t ride up at all, but it cost $200!!! (Besty ended up not carrying it because of the price point.) So it is possible to make ones that don’t ride up, even for the short wasted. It’s just that no one does it for a reasonable amount of money.

great fabric… kind of $$$…so good that my size is sold out.

I actually saw this (IRL) in a Bloomingdale’s last night….I did not like it IRL as much as in this picture. It is more navy blue (picture looks almost black) and the white knit fabric just doesn’t look appealing.
