Bargain Friday’s TPS Report: Petal Pencil Skirt

in Fashion, The Personal Shopper (TPS), Wear to Work

Our daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices.

tThe Limited has a lot of suiting on work pieces on sale right now, and reader K asked for our thoughts on this skirt.  “I think it’s really fun and might be work-worthy with a good button down. Wondering if the ‘petal’ effect might make it too short for the office?”  We do like the look of this piece, and agree with the reader that it looks fun and interesting — although with the obvious caveat that it’s a little short.  If you’re petite, though, or happen to have short legs, this skirt might just hit you at the right point — which we would say would be just at your knee, with the petal part being just above the knee.  (We’re talking centimeters, not inches, here.)  We’d probably wear it with a sweater set rather than a buttoned shirt, but that’s just us.  The skirt is regularly $69, but it’s free with any purchase of a jacket during The Limited’s current promotion.  Petal Pencil Skirt

If you’ve recently seen a great work piece you’d like to recommend to the readers, please e-mail editor@corporette.com with “TPS” in the subject line. Unless you ask otherwise, we’ll refer to you by your first initial.

Interesting! I don’t think I could pull it off, but I like it.

I’m 5’4″ and 22 inch skirt length would hit just below my knee, so I like the skirt but the sleeves on the suit jacket just don’t work for me. I like 3/4 length sleeves but short sleeves, no. So it would either be the twin set on top or the ever reliable black jacket.

I bought this skirt a few weeks ago and it’s great. I’m 5’6.5″ and normally very cautious about skirts being too short. The petals add detail but don’t make it super flirty or young. I wore it with a white button down with a longer (butt covering) black sweater and a belt on top of the sweater.

When are people going to start realizing that the apparent length on the model/mannequin has no correlation to how it is going to fit on a real person? There is nothing short about a 22 inch skirt IMO (maybe if you’re over 5’9?)

Love this, but wouldn’t want the suit jacket.

Red or another fun color like purple if you keep the rest of your outfit neutral.

Bright yellow might be nice, but it would probably be a lot harder to find yellow than silver or red.

How is the quality of The Limited’s suiting? Their suits are much cheaper than Ann Taylor/Banana/J Crew, and I was wondering if that’s obviously reflected in the clothes.

I’ve found the quality varies. I’d say its better quality and more professionally cut than a store like Express or NY & Co. But these aren’t going to be pieces to last you years. You could get away with it starting out or as a more trendy item you want to try for a season but more than that, probably not.

That said I have a pair of black pinstripe suit pants from the Limited that are a wool blend that are going on 5 years old and only just starting to fall apart but I only wear them in the summer because they are unlined.

I was just in the Limited yesterday and noticed how many more suits/jackets they had than usual. Most of the jackets are fairly trendy (short sleeved or 3/4 sleeved, cropped, belted, etc.) but I thought there were a lot of cute options. And the promotion where you get free pants or skirt with the jacket purchase is great! But I too wondered about the quality of their suits.

My very first suit was from the Limited– but that was 10 years ago. I still have it today and wear it often!

Congrats on fitting into the suit you bought 10 years ago!!!

The suits I have from The Limited fit better than my Ann Klein and Calvin Klein suits. I feel like the jackets have more shape and look more tailored.

I have one suit from there that fits well, especially the jacket (well, used to fit well before I gained a little weight…), and fitting well usually means looking less cheap, in my opinion. My complaint is that the pants aren’t lined (though the skirt I bought at the same time is, so who knows?). I actually really miss the limited for casual clothes–the one in my town closed a couple of months ago.

Completely agree about a good fit. How are their sizes? Meaning, are they cut a bit smaller, or a bit bigger? Thanks.

I think the fit is similar to Theory. Everything tends to be fairly straight and doesn’t allow for much in terms of curves. I don’t have broad shoulders by any means, but a Limited jacket that fits me in the chest down is so tight in the shoulders/upper back area that I can’t move my arms!

Glorious! Love love love.

Wow, I haven’t been in a Limited in probably 5 years, but a lot of their stuff on their website looks really nice. Why isn’t there a Limited in Manhattan??

I actually like the jacket that goes with the suit, and many other of the jackets on the site, but I noticed that most of them were polyester blends…

I just tried this on two days ago. I like it but it was too short for work, I’m 6’3″ with a 40inch inseam. I figured it would be though, just thought I’d give it a try!
