Color us psyched: the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is on!! Tons of pieces from the fall collections are on sale — the items will return to their regular prices on August 2.  Today, we’re liking this simple cardigan — we like the range of colors offered, the three-quarter-length sleeves, and the floral appliques on the shoulder. Lovely! Perfect Friday attire for a girly-girl like me. I love it in Pout and Molten Coral. (Sorry if this is a duplicate . . . told me I was “posting too fast”)

It’s an okay sweater – but I do love those color names!

Oh no, I forgot! Nordstrom opened at 7 a.m. and I was going to stop on the way to work! I’ve gone before on the first Friday night of the sale and it is an absolute zoo.

I saw this in the anniversary sale catalog and loved it. I will definitely be searching for it when I hit the sale!

I just found this blog earlier this week. As a law student soon to be entering my third year, I feel this blog is going to be an amazing asset for the coming year’s job interviews, as well as the working environment I hope to soon be entering. Thanks for the fun and helpful advice!

Already placed my first order this morning, and Nordstrom is already sold out of a couple of things I had been eyeing, including the purple skirt in the TPS picture today. I really hope they get more stock in.

AIMS July 16, 2010 at 10:06 am

Keep checking. They had a pair of shoes I wanted all summer that went on sale but in the wrong color. I finally decided I would get them even though I wanted the other color & when I went they had the ones I wanted in stock again, despite being sold out earlier. I’ve also had luck calling customer service & having them ship me what I want from a particular store that still has the item.

MelD July 16, 2010 at 10:27 am

Check the stores. I often see items in stores weeks after they have been sold out online, plus they’ll be able to ship something from another store if the one in question doesn’t have it in stock.

That purple skirt is a knit skirt. I am ENVIOUS of a woman who can pull that off. I’ve tried them on and even if I try three sizes larger than my waist size they look a little too scandalous on me. A-lines and CE pencil skirts are what I rock. Can’t wait to go shopping this weekend.

On me they just show every fold and bump of my body, belly button included not a good look.

Also, is there a nice way to tell you that anecdote doesn’t have a T? I wouldn’t normally, but since you’re using it as your username…

Thank you. That’s what I get for being a part of the Spellcheck generation. Fortunately I change my username here a lot, so when I misspell things it does not have lasting effects.

That’s why I love Firefox: built in spell check! I’m with you; I’m a good speller, but I’m so accustomed to spell check that I no longer bother to check things I type for errors.

I stopped in this morning and found a few good deals. I’m about to hop online right now to see what kind of deals they have there!

I just took a look at the online sale (no Nordstrom in NYC, sadness) and there are quite a few beautiful cap- or long-sleeves dresses for the ladies that are looking for them! There are also some great suits / blazers in the sale that I’m having trouble staying away from – I ended up buying the beige Andy The-Anh dress suit that was featured on Corporette a while ago (half off, pretty much!) yesterday, which has blown through my budget for a bit!

KZ July 16, 2010 at 11:46 am

i saw about 10 i want, but I’m so hesitant to buy dresses online since sizing varies so much. Really wish they’d open a Nordstrom in NYC!

I ordered this too in both colors. I love how it looks on the model and am hoping that it is a good fit for me!

At least there’s now a Nordstrom Rack on 14th.
I wonder if you can bring online returns there . . .

Reply

Anonymous July 16, 2010 at 1:37 pm

Yes, you can return things at Rack with no problem- just did it! I had the same question, their online return policy is frustratingly unclear, but the salesperson assured me that it was their policy to take returns from online or regular Nordstroms at Rack.

Thanks!!! That’s fabulous news — I just order a cardi that ended up having really cheap looking buttons on the sleeve & I have been dreading having to return it by mail; psyched to hear I can just pop over to Union Sq.

anon July 16, 2010 at 11:09 am

Not from the Nordstrom sale, but if you like this look you might check out the Boden rosette cardigans; there’s one on sale and I think there’s one in the fall line too. I have the sale one in three colors and love it. It’s lightweight merino, so probably longer-lasting than the one above.

That is super cute and I’d be all over it if it were cotton. Thanks for the Boden link though, I’m bookmarking it

I am mildly obsessed with Boden right now. Their clothes are such high quality. I had almost forgotten what high-quality clothes were like before I started ordering from them (very recently). The maxi dress, metallic sandals and tee I got from them last month are in heavy rotation.

Kimbo July 16, 2010 at 3:42 pm

I am in love with Boden right now, too. I discovered them about a year ago and my love affair continues. My workplace is business casual, so I’m able to wear a lot of their dresses, skirts, sweaters, and blouses to work. They’ve become my go-to store for weekend wear, too.

I just ordered quite a bit from the sale, including two dresses I’ve been wavering on for a while. When I saw the reduced prices, I stopped wavering and decided I needed them!

I also ordered several of the ruffle front tees. Hopefully they’ll fit well!

jcb July 16, 2010 at 4:12 pm

I just did the same thing!! I am/was on a spending hiatus, but then I saw the dress I’d been wanting on sale for $50. I kind of had to buy it (and 2 others, and the rosette cami, and a blouse). Boden always has such good sales, it’s driving me to the poorhouse.

anon July 16, 2010 at 9:25 pm

I’m the original poster about Boden and I agree w/ all of you, especially about the quality. Their jersey and wool seems to pill and fade a lot less than that from other places.

never seen them before – but love all their dresses!! now i just have to choose…

I have not heard of this company before, but will definitely be checking it out. I’m so excited to hear of a company that makes QUALITY clothes instead of ones that fall apart shortly after being purchased. Any tips on how the sizing runs? Thanks.

Beware of that cardigan – I got it and had to return bc it was too itchy.

I learned about Boden from a wrap dress post on Corporette. I ordered it and love it. Great quality and comfortable.

I like it very much, both colors are beautiful, and that collar is very flattering to a lot of people. But I tend to go around most of the day with my jacket undone, so I’d wonder what this one looked like unzipped – too flappy?

Like it, looks useful.

Lizbet July 16, 2010 at 2:09 pm

It’s lovely, but I’m betting it’s pinned in the back to make it nip in at the waist. Eileen Fisher makes things in beautiful fabrics and textures, but almost everything is very boxy and shapeless.

Yes. I recently tried a size 2 EF jacket & was positively swimming in it! (Nrmally I’m a 4).

I know better than to take office style advice from VS, but what do people think of this type of suit (if paired with a normal shell + shoes). Is it too tight a la Debrahlee (hehe):

Too tight, not a fan at all. Plus, cotton/spandex. Don’t do it.

Reply

A-n0n-lawyer July 16, 2010 at 12:09 pm

+1 way too tight

I also think that ankle pants are a little too cutesy for the office.

Reply

Shayna July 16, 2010 at 1:03 pm

No spandex at work!

Reply

Lola July 16, 2010 at 1:57 pm

Too tight (pants) and too baggy (jacket) at the same time. Overall, WAY too trendy.

Reply

anon23 July 16, 2010 at 11:55 am

I don’t like the ankle crop pants.

Reply

Kimbo July 16, 2010 at 12:00 pm

I like this style aesthetically, but I don’t think it’s right for work. I can’t help but picture the boyfriend blazer with jeans that are a similar style to the pants shown and the pants with a boyfriend sweater that’s a similar style to the blazer shown. I think both of those would be cute weekend looks!

Reply

s in Chicago July 16, 2010 at 11:41 pm

Completely agree. The length of the jacket doesn’t seem quite right for work, but it would look great with jeans. The pants with a sweater would be nice for a casual setting as well.

(Pants at work in a formal setting a definite no-no, especially with those slits along the ankles.)

Lol, I just got back from the sale and bought this exact sweater! It’s very lightweight and great for layering. I also got an amazing adrianna papell cap sleaved dress for $78. Gotta love the anniversary sale.

the anniversary sale always has the worst timing with my pay cycle! i don’t get paid for a week and i already squirreled away all my “fun” money for traveling…i saw that it was open on the train this morning and had a pouty moment.

Amy July 16, 2010 at 12:20 pm

I got “invited” to pre-shop the anniversary sale when I was on vacation last week. For those plus-sizes considering this jacket/suit:
http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/3092390/0~2376776~2374327~6028522~6028534?mediumthumbnail=Y&origin=category&searchtype=&pbo=6028534&P=2
Just a note. I tried it on in three sizes – normal size, size up, and size down – and the lining bunched up in a really weird and unattractive way in each size. The lining pulled the bottom hem of the jacket so that it almost looked like a “bubble” hem! I am glad I got to try it on before I bought it, as it would have been a definite return.
For those who can get to a store – they have some very lovely Lafayette 148 suit separates and base pieces that I’m not seeing online, that I was told were part of the sale – definitely ask at the store if they have any left.

if you have a nordstrom rack near you, you can just wait for everything to show up there, because it eventually will. that is what is keeping me from walking through those doors!

Can someone please give me advice on shopping at a Nordstrom store, since their in-store departments aren’t clearly described? Where should I look for the kind of classy work pieces that are featured here?

I’ve visited the store in the past during the Anniversary Sale, but I usually find myself walking around looking lost, weaving through departments, and not really finding the kind of style I’m looking for.

Help me walk purposefully into the store with my head held high and walk out with some great pieces!

Reply

Julie July 16, 2010 at 2:22 pm

This sweater is located in the Point of View Department, which is a good place to look for the more casual side of business casual. They have a lot of cardigans, some skirts, and some less expensive suits. They also have a lot of layering pieces (silk shells for example).

Individualist is where you’ll find the more upscale things – Nanette Lepore, Eli Tahari, etc. Now’s a good time to shop here if you can afford it because things are really marked down.

There’s also Narrative, which I think caters to a slightly older demographic than Point of View. t.b.d is very trendy and expensive as is studio 121, neither of which is very work appropriate. Dresses can have some good work appropriate dresses.

Hope this helps.

Reply

Sarah July 16, 2010 at 2:34 pm

Their work stuff and suits are usually in the “Individualist” department. Shoes and accessories are labeled as such. BP is the junior’s section, but I usually find things like tank tops and such there as well. Jeans and casual women’s are in Savvy. Dresses are usually in “Dresses” unless it’s a designer that the specific Nordstrom carries in the store. For example, a St. John dress would be in the St. John section, not necessarily in the “Dresses” section.

The salespeople would be more than happy to help you find what you need. If going to salespeople isn’t your thing, the customer service desk will also be able to help you out. I’ve found Nordstrom to be a hybrid organization of regular American department stores (where everything is categorized by the piece of clothing/event) and European department stores (where everything is categorized by the designer). I’ve also found that some Nordstroms don’t have departments that others do, so this might work best for the Nordstrom that’s closest to you.

If you find a piece online that is also in the store, it will say the department in the item’s description. It’s usually the last little bullet point or the second-to-last in the description before the drop-down menus.

I think it’s very old looking, as is anything with attached flowers like that. This means both old fashioned and elderly. I don’t think that’s what’s meant by Friday attire. I don’t think “casual” equates to “girly”.

Reply

Elizabeth July 16, 2010 at 7:39 pm

I’ve always like flower details like this on clothing in theory. However, like capri pants, whenever I actually try them on in the dressing room, I just don’t like them on me.
