Love the simple cowl neck stretch knit top pictured here — the cowl neck is almost like a necklace or a scarf, and the fact that it has sleeves means you don’t have to do much more to accessorize it. Love the styling, too — the bun looks simple and classic, not schoolmarm-ish, and the hairstyle complements the bunched fabric at the base of the neck. Lovely. Was $69, now $41.40 at Dillards (in citrine and in black). Antonio Melani “May” Knit Top

Reader J writes in to suggest this fabulous bag, noting “Saw this bag while checking out Nordstrom’s anniversary sale this morning and thought I would share. I think it’s a great work bag– the red is an eye-catcher, and the black is classic.” Love! A friend of ours owns a few Brahmin bags, and we can vouch for the quality — they’ve held up really well for her. They seem to be sold out of black at the moment, but we really like the yellow — it’s a great, sunny pop of color for either spring or fall. Currently $216, it’ll be $325 after the sale. Reader E writes in with a question about non-leather accessories…
My husband and I have decided to go vegetarian for ethical reasons. Although transitioning our diets hasn’t been that difficult, I’m having a hard time figuring out a way to replace leather, especially for shoes and purses. Most of the eco-friendly companies I’ve found just don’t look professional. Any suggestions?
Judging by the comments when we last posted a vegan shoe (also, ahem, the day we forgot it was Earth Day), you are not alone in wanting to non-leather accessories. Moo Shoes in NYC is the big store we can think of (they “proudly offer the largest variety of vegan shoes and accessories in the world”); VeganChic and the UK-based Neon Collective also sell a wide range of shoes from designers. We’ve also heard good things about the brands Neuaura, Beyond Skin, olsenHaus, and Charmone. (We like the Beyond Skin Women’s Franklin Pump, pictured, available at Endless.com for $215.) You may also want to check out blog Ecouterre, which is “devoted to the future of sustainable fashion design.”
Readers, which vegan accessory lines are your favorites?
Incidentally — here’s a nice blog post we found while browsing — the author goes over some of damage that leather shoes can do to the environment, for those of you who are curious.
Eeeek! I had not seen this until this very morning — we filmed it a few weeks ago, super early one Saturday morning — the sun was shining, skies were blue, it was a comfortable temperature — oh so long ago! Many thanks to the talented director Yuli Ziv of Style Coalition, to Tara Drake for make-up and Jen Paelmo for hair, and to Jennine Jacob of The Coveted for photos! (Photo credit: Jennine Jacob.)
The really cool part about this collaboration is that I have a $250 JCPenney gift card to give away to one lucky reader! And, of the ten sites who participated in this project, one comment will be randomly selected to win a $1500 gift card.
As I mentioned earlier, I’m wearing a great dress from American Living by JCPenney, as well as my own pearls (Mikimoto), watch (Cartier), bag (Dooney & Bourke), and heels (Sacco). I think I got my earrings from Kaufmann’s in Cleveland (which is now Macy’s) — I’ve had them for years and wear them all the time.
In the video I talk about how my native-to-Kat style was a bit wacky/creative. Let’s put it this way: I was that kid in college who either dressed in all black or red pants with jewelry I’d made myself or found in one of Chicago’s thrift stores. So for me, adapting to Wall Street dressing was a challenge when I started working there back in 2003 or so. So: in order to enter the giveaway, PLEASE either a) tell us how your style has changed over the years — how you’ve adapted as you’ve gone from college to grad school to a professional job or b) tell us what your “made for” moment is, or c) which JCPenney outfit you’d like to wear to the office.
A winner will be drawn randomly on July 31, and I’ll announce here on the blog who was the winner on August 2. UPDATE: I’ll announce the winner on my blog, but PLEASE give me your e-mail address in your comment — I promise to keep ‘em private, not sell your information, all that good stuff. Here are the official sweepstakes rules.

We’re loving this simple blue dress from Evan Picone, available at Macy’s. Love the longer sleeves, the crossover neckline, the A-line skirt — and that royal blue color! The dress is $99, with an extra 15% off in the ongoing sale. It’s available in blue (pictured), purple, and black. Evan Picone Dress, Three Quarter Sleeve Marilyn
