Coffee Break – Kaida Kitten Heel

by Kat May 24, 2011 Coffee Break

Fitzwell - Kaida (Pewter Kid Leather) - FootwearI’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I love a kitten heel for the office. This style from Fitzwell has numerous reviews extolling the comfort and style, and I really like the starburst pattern on the vamp. It’s available in “pewter” (pictured), black patent leather, and (in calf leather) black, brown, and navy. It’s $69 at Zappos.com. Fitzwell – Kaida (Pewter Kid Leather) – Footwear

What to Wear to Workout – In Front of Coworkers

by Kat May 24, 2011 Comfort

Printed Chase SkortReader M has an interesting question that brings us back to that old classic: what do you wear to workout or exercise in front of coworkers?

I am an articling student at a mid sized law firm and I have a “law day fun run” coming up, hosted by the law society. It just occurred to me that my running outfit (mini skort and a skin tight tank top) might not send the right impression even though it’s what I actually wear when I go running. I have seen male lawyers biking and running in skintight and/or revealing outfits before but I am not sure if I can get away with that as a female lawyer.

What should I wear?

I offered my advice on what to wear to the corporate gym way way back in 2008, and I’m curious to hear what readers today have to say about it. More and more companies are offering on-premises gyms for their staffers’ use, and even if they don’t, many people go to the gyms located near the office, where odds are high that you’ll see coworkers. (Pictured: Printed Chase Skort, available at Athleta for $54.)

Runners particularly can get into trouble here. Half of the runners I know rely on old (ollllld) t-shirts and shorts — the other half buy shiny, new, TIGHT clothing — running tights, sports bras-as-tops, and more.

A lot of this depends on your personal modesty. For my $.02, the skort and skintight tank sounds fine to me, if that’s what your comfortable running in. A few notes, though:

a) Whether your shirt is tight or not — please make sure that your sports bra is a good one and actually stops the bounce. If you have a less than stellar sports bra, not only is it bad for the girls, but wow, talk about distracting. As someone with a larger bust myself I’ve always sworn by Enell bras (such as Enell Maximum Control Wire-Free Sports Bra, available at Bare Necessities for $64.)

b) Wear an opaque shirt. Even though I don’t think twice of passing women on the street wearing nothing but a sports bra, it’s a wee bit different when you know that person in a working capacity. So wear a shirt, and wear an opaque shirt at that.

c) Whatever you wear on the bottom, make sure that it’s something vaguely flattering. Avoid pants that are skintight (and, please, pants that emphasize too-small underwear, as well!). If it were me, I would also gauge whether my shorts or skorts were overambitious, given the state of my legs. Don’t get me wrong, I wear a lot of shorts during summer months if I’m working out in the apartment or going for a run near the apartment — but it’s just a different calculus, for me at least, when I consider wearing those shorts to anywhere near the office. In fact, a friend was just telling me about a line of workout clothes featuring Spanx-like features — if I can find the link I’ll share.

Ladies, what do you think? Should shorts/skorts be off-limits entirely? Should only loose tops be worn? And what about hair — would anyone advise a friend to not wear a ponytail or pigtails?

Tuesday’s TPS Report: Erebecca Blouse

by Kat May 24, 2011 The Personal Shopper (TPS)

Our daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices.

Hugo Boss Orange - Erebecca 10142215 01 (Medium Blue) - ApparelI’m always split on blouses like this Hugo Boss Orange one. On the one hand, it reminds me a wee bit of something you’d wear beneath a judicial robe, or perhaps the blouse Jennifer Connelly wore in Labyrinth. However, by the same token it’s a gorgeous, professional blouse. I like the slightly long, loose sleeve, the teeny ruffles where the sleeves meet the shirt, and the high necked, ruffled bow. It’s on sale at Zappos: was $195, marked today to $156. Hugo Boss Orange – Erebecca 10142215 01 (Medium Blue) – Apparel

Coffee Break – Cami Bra

by Kat May 23, 2011 Coffee Break

Assets® by Sara Blakely ® Foundations Cami BraReader C wrote in to recommend this item, which seems like it fills a definite niche:

This cami bra is my new best friend. I have it in white and in black. It is perfect under wrap dresses and the like for work. Some people might prefer the “cami” to come up a little higher, but if I need to be that conservative I’m probably wearing a suit anyway. I had been looking for a product like this for years but the ones at Neiman’s were too lacy and crazy expensive. This one is perfect. No more cutting off perfectly good camis so they bottom line won’t show through. Packing for a trip just got easier too. (How many times have I packed the blouse or dress but forgotten the cami?) Incidentally, at least on me, a 34-D, the support and shaping of the bra is very good and the comfort is fine, though I probably could have done with a DD, which is not available.

Wow! The bra apparently features an underwire, so this is a full-on bra (and not, say, a “dickey” like I remember wearing as a teenager — Amazon has a few lace dickies for sale; they may also be called “modesty panels“) I do like this more modern cami bra, though, and can see how it would be welcomed by a lot of women in the summertime. This one is $32 at Target, and is available in white and black. Assets® by Sara Blakely ® Foundations Cami Bra

Flip-Flops, Sandals, and Office Propriety, Oh My!

by Kat May 23, 2011 Business Etiquette

Calvin Klein - Jade (Pink Patent) - FootwearReader V has a full-fledged shoe debacle on her hands — and she might be charged with delineating (i.e. narrowing) the rules further…

We are in the middle of the full raging summer shoe debate at my work place. I work at a CPA firm. We have a no flip-flop policy = no shoes that have anything between the toes. We also use a suggested guideline of more shoe than foot. A new rather gutsy administrative professional started wearing decorative flip-flops…. Flats with large flowers decorations. I privately told her that flip flops are against the office policy. She commented rudely about the firm buying her all new shoes and that she was going to appeal it up to her supervisors. She did and they backed the policy but another administrative person suggested that she appeal it further. So now I am charged with researching other professional service policies. This morning I queried my friends at local banks and law firms and they all agree with the no flip flop rule. My question is …. Are we just in a Midwestern U.S. frame of mind? Also… what may very well happen as a result of her “challenge” is that the rule gets tighten even further. We are noticing strappy sandals that are more foot than shoe. One person has suggested we go with just pumps or peep-toes but no strappy sandals at all. Thoughts????

Yowza. I always say “know your office” when we talk about shoes, but I wonder how that really shakes out in the aggregate. So: perhaps today is the day for a poll. (For the poll below, multiple answers are allowed, and by “which are not acceptable” I mean “which would you not wear, whether there’s an office policy against it or not.”) (Pictured above: Calvin Klein – Jade (Pink Patent) – Footwear, available at Zappos on sale today for $38.) If your office policy disallows something else, please note it in the comments.

Now the more interesting question here is WHAT the rule ought to be, and why. In a perfect world, we could all just say “we’re all adults, let’s just let everyone use their best judgment” — but, well, there’s always that lowest common denominator you have to legislate for, whether it’s the 20-year-old intern, the “gutsy” administrative professional (as reader V mentioned), or that senior executive who has zero common sense. So here’s my $.02 for which shoes are NOT appropriate:

Steve Madden Slinky- Any shoes that make a loud sound when walking down the hallway. I started my office career in the late ’90s when those Steve Madden slides were all the rage — for those who don’t remember they were a flatform sandal that had a thick black elastic strap (about 3″ wide) for the vamp of your foot. (And, ZOMG, I just realized that they’ve been re-introduced. You can purchase at Steve Madden for $59.95, should you so desire.) My point here is that they were super comfortable, we ALL wore them to work ad nauseum … and they made the loudest FLAPFLAPFLAP sound you could have imagined while walking down the hallway. Honestly, it boggles the mind to think that none of our superiors took us aside and said something. In any event: I think flip flops create similar problems (loud FLAPFLAPFLAP noise).

- Any shoe made primarily of plastic. This is another problem with most flip-flops — but honestly I’d be hard-pressed to call even a high quality leather flip-flop office appropriate. (FWIW, though, Bernardo makes some great leather flip-flops — allegedly that brand was Jackie O’s favorite.)

- Any shoe that requires a pedicure to look good. Maybe this is just me, but feet can be gross, yo. A perfectly pedicured foot is one thing — but without getting into too many details, there are so many, many other ways that feet can look (and, um, smell). If I were Queen of the Office, I wouldn’t want clients coming into the office and being forced to view feet that were less than perfect — but I’d hate to require (or suggest) pedicures of employees. So if it were me, I would just ban all sandals, for both men and women. I think it’s much harder to offend in peep-toes than it is in sandals… but if it were a conservative office I’d just make both men and women wear closed-toe shoes.

Readers, what is the rule at your office (and is it a clear rule?) If you were Queen of the Office, what would your rules be?

Splurge Monday’s TPS Report: Magic Wand Knit Jacket

by Kat May 23, 2011 The Personal Shopper (TPS)

Our daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices.

Nanette Lepore Magic Wand Knit JacketSaks has a ton of cute, work-appropriate things on sale right now (although only limited sizes are left in a lot of it) — including this great sweater jacket from Nanette Lepore. I love the creamy color, the elasticized center back waist, and the wide lapels. While I’m not normally a “bow” girl, I do like the bow details on the pockets; they add interest without being too frilly or girly. The jacket was $398, now marked to $278 (size S only, alas!).
