Weekend Open Thread

Pleated V-Neck Tank DressSomething on your mind? Chat about it here.

I love this kind of casual dress for summer — it’s machine washable, breezy but not overexposed, and, if push comes to shove, you can wear it to work with a blazer and sedate pumps before throwing on strappy sandals and a fun necklace for dinner with friends. It’s $49.50 at LOFT, available in “dark ink” (pictured), cabernet, lollipop red, and mango. Pleated V-Neck Tank Dress

Halogen Flutter Sleeve Peplum BlouseHooray for Friday! Today I’m liking this cute flutter sleeve peplum blouse, part of Nordstrom’s Half Yearly Sale (see my sale roundup from last week). I like the pattern, and in general I think it looks really wearable, either by itself, with a belt, or beneath a blazer or cardigan. The blouse is available in both red and black, and I like ’em both.  It was $59, but thanks to the sale it’s marked to $35.40. Halogen Flutter Sleeve Peplum Blouse

Coffee Break: Hutton Medium Tote

Rachel Zoe Hutton Medium Tote ShopBop has some great new markdowns on their designer and contemorary collections, including this lovely Rachel Zoe tote.  I like it in the “dark mint,” but it’s also available in “French Beige” and black.  It seems much more like a briefcase than a tote, though, and at 16 inches long, 12 inches high, and 6 inches deep, it can probably carry most things you’ll want for the office.  It was $845, but is now marked to $507 at ShopBop.  Rachel Zoe Hutton Medium Tote

How to Schedule Appointments When You’re Very Busy

how to make appointmentsHow do you stay on top of hair cuts and other personal care appointments when you’re a busy professional? Reader S, who is about to start as a summer associate, wonders…

I’m in law school, about to start as a summer associate at a firm in NYC, and I was wondering if you had any advice on scheduling appointments while working at a firm. I know that as a summer, I probably won’t have the same workload as I would as a junior associate, so this is mostly a question for the future. When you were in BigLaw, how did you stay on top of things like hair cuts and waxing appointments? It just seem like the hours you need to be working and in the office would make it really hard to schedule things in advance or take the time off to get in with your favorite person.

Great question, S — for my $.02, the answer is to make friends with your calendar system. Let me explain:

– Schedule appointments at the first or last appointment of the day. Doctors, hairstylists, it doesn’t matter — everyone who is appointment-based falls behind. Another option: take advantage of weekend appointments where offered.

– Schedule WELL in advance. The first or last appointment of the day (or the weekend appointment) can be really hard to get, which is why you should try to schedule everything ahead of time, when you can afford to wait a few weeks or months. [Read more…]

Thursday’s TPS Report: Ponte Snap-Front Jacket

Our daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices.

Tahari Ponte Snap-Front Jacket Last Call by Neiman Marcus has a number of ponte blazers on sale right now (see also). I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again — I love this kind of shrunken, knit blazer, particularly for the summer, because they’re almost as comfy as a cardigan but with a lot more authority. This Tahari snap-front jacket (with nice ruching details at the back and on the shoulders) looks great for wearing with navy, black, gray, and more. Was $188, now marked to $115, but with the current sale it comes down to $80.50. Tahari Ponte Snap-Front Jacket
