Holiday Weekend Open Thread

Teri Jon V-Neck Brooch GownSomething on your mind? Chat about it here.

Happy Thanksgiving and Happy Hanukkah, ladies! Stay tuned for Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals; otherwise we’ll be taking it slow until Tuesday. (If the open thread gets out of control I’ll open another one.) As for the gorgeous dress at left: if anyone still buys (rather than rents) dresses for major galas and events, this black Teri Jon one looks amazing for a professional event: it’s flattering and feminine, yet you can wear a normal bra and don’t have to feel like too much is exposed. It isn’t too blingy, and with a basic color like black you can have fun with accessories like wraps, jewelry, shoes, and more. The dress was $710, then marked to $495, but with the sale it comes down to $297. Teri Jon V-Neck Brooch Gown, Black

  • Above the Law recently held a caption contest for the above billboard.  The captions are mildly funny, but I’m curious — does it change your knee-jerk opinion (whatever it is) that the two women pictured are apparently the only owners of the firm?

  • Already Pretty contributor Cassie suggests some ways to reconcile a conservative workplace and indie style (something we’ve also discussed here via guest poster Siouxsie Law).
  • The Washington Post writes about the red sneaker effect; a study found that a business woman wearing red sneakers with her suit was thought to have higher rates than a business woman wearing regular shoes.  Very interesting — I’ve written before about my theory about “the eccentric genius” personality, but I’ve often thought it’s much harder for women to rock.

Frugal Wednesday’s TPS Report: Drape Front Jersey Top

Our daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices.

Robbi & Nikki Drape Front Jersey TopThis interesting draped jersey top caught my eye a few weeks ago, and I keep coming back to it — I love the shade of purple, and it seems flattering and very modern, but in a relaxed and comfortable way. I think it would look great with a long cardigan and ankle pants for a casual day, or perhaps belted with a pencil skirt. It’s $54 at Nordstrom (also available in a black floral print). Coffee Break: Fiorentina Pump

Sofft FiorentinaI love a good purple suede pump — and this one from Sofft is on a super sale at 6pm: was $115, now $38. It’s available in grape and brown suede, as well as black calf; at 3″ high it’s just right. I’m really digging the chunky heel; it feels like it has a bit of a vintage vibe. Sofft Fiorentina

Three-Quarter Sleeved Blazers in Winter

How to Wear Three-Quarter-Sleeved Blazers in Winter | CorporetteHow do you wear three-quarter sleeved blazers once winter arrives?  Reader R wonders…

Now that the cooler months are approaching, I have a question about 3/4 length sleeve blazers. I have a belted one that is very warm and work-appropriate, but I never know what sort of shirt to wear under it. (Ditto for many cute blazers I see out there, especially tweed ones.) Is it OK to wear a long-sleeved shirt under a blazer with 3/4 length sleeves? If so, what color/fit guidelines would you recommend? It seems like a waste to have a blazer in a heavier fabric if your wrists and lower arms are going to be exposed to the elements.

Interesting question.  (Pictured above: Rebecca Taylor Raw-Edge Tweed Blazer, on sale at Last Call: was $395, now marked to $126.40 (sizes 4-8 only).) We’ve talked in general about what to wear beneath suit jackets, and how to wear a black blazer as a separate, but we haven’t talked about this.  For my $.02, this is how I’ve always worn them, but I’m curious to see what other ladies are doing: [Read more…]
