Tuesday’s TPS Report: Bootcut Jeans

'Angelina' Slim Bootcut Jeans | CorporetteOur daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices. This week’s TPS reports come to us from Lisa of Privilege, who has guest posted with us before. Thanks for sharing your picks with us this week, Lisa!

I find bootcut jeans in a dark wash to be the most useful pants for a casual but authoritative office look. To be sure, jeans are personal, like kissing. Everyone’s got a different take. My favorite bootcuts had always been 7 for Mankind, but recently I tried on a pair of AG Jeans and liked what I felt. They’re soft. Forgiving. These “Angelinas” do have a little whiskering — your office mileage may vary for distressed denim tolerance — but the petite version is a nice option to avoid hemming. AG also makes a great skinny — you can go for a high waist if you dare.

I think I would. All three are available at Nordstrom for $175 and up. “Angelina” Slim Bootcut Jeans, Media (Petite); “Angelina” Bootcut Jeans, Crest Blue (Petite)“Farrah” High Rise Skinny Jeans (Raven)

Coffee Break: Haight Satchel

YUMC Haight SatchelI was poking through the under $100 handbag selection on Nordstrom, looking for well-reviewed items for something else (see below), when I spied this gorgeous satchel — it looks like a great casual, fun briefcase for $65.  I’d probably remove the crossbody strap (I almost always do!), but that’s me.  The bag is 16″W x 11″H x 5″D, and comes in four colors of tough 1050-denier nylon; it fits up to a 13″ laptop.  YUMC Haight Satchel

But here’s the Q that prompted my search (before I got distracted by the pretty red affordable briefcase): I was thinking this morning about how we’ve found numerous budget heels that are kind of classics — the $20 Karmen pump at Payless, the $25ish Merona wedge at Target — but I don’t think we’ve ever found a low cost handbag that I would call a classic. By “classic” I mean: a bag that’s been around for several years from the same retailer, probably in several colors, and continuously gets great reviews from Corporette readers. While I can think of a NUMBER of bags like that in the $300-$600 range, it’s hard to think of any in the $100 range or under. So let’s hear it, ladies — which are your favorite classic budget handbags for work? Do such things exist, or are they all lucky finds?

Summer Associate Events: What to Wear to the Fun-But-Wacky Office Functions

Summer Associate Events: What To Wear to the Fun-But-Unusual Office Functions | CorporetteThis week, in our Summer Associate Series: what should you wear to the company golf outing… the company picnic… the company pool party?  There are always some creative team-building office functions (designed for interns and employees alike) that — while fun — are a minefield when it comes to dressing professionally. (If anyone doubts that these events are still going on despite the bad economy: Above the Law holds a contest for the best event of the summer!)  Readers, what is the most creative summer associate event your company is holding? What was the hardest-to-dress office event you ever attended?

(Name aside, we hope this series will be helpful to ANY intern, whether you’re a law student or another woman interning in a conservative office for the summer.)  Check out our previous post on general summer associate style.

Some of the best iterations of the “what to wear to the summer associate event” question that we’ve covered through the years:

Splurge Monday’s TPS Report: Perforated Jacket

Akris Punto Perforated Jacket | CorporetteOur daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices. This week’s TPS guest poster is the author of one of our top posts ever on Corporette: advice from the hiring manager/vp level. (She’s also guest posted on what you might miss about the intense job once you’re gone.) A big welcome back to the very stylish Lisa from Privilege! – Kat

This week I’ll be focused on what to wear to the casual office, particularly when you’re an executive or manager and want to project a little authority. And, because the last time I wrote here about something I didn’t know, you all rightly eviscerated me, I’m also going to focus on the specific casual offices found in San Francisco Internet companies.

This is a specialized niche, but one that generates a lot of revenue and career opportunities. One foggy day, you in more traditional service offices — the lawyers, the investment bankers, the accountants — may find yourselves in our world.

So, the Monday Splurge? Same in tech as anywhere, go for the killer jacket. Of course, here you’ll be wearing it with jeans, but still. Take this blazer by Akris Punto, my current favorite very high-end line. Navy? Check. Classic shape? Check. Super cool perforations and a great length for skinny jeans? Check. It’s even on sale at Neiman’s in multiple sizes, marked down from $1590 to $954. Akris Punto Perforated Jacket
