Weekend Open Thread

Dolce Vita Harlene Bootie | CorporetteSomething on your mind? Chat about it here.

These aren’t the most appropriate boots for a conservative office, but I lurve them for the weekend. I love the equestrian details, the buckles, and the slightly crackled look to the leather. They’re $200 at Zappos. Dolce Vita Harlene Bootie

Here’s a lower-priced option.

Frugal Friday’s TPS Report: Cassidy Bootcut Pant

Our daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices.

Cassidy Bootcut PantsCobalt is back, and it isn’t just among the big designers like McQueen — both Limited and Express have cobalt trousers this season.  (Express’s are a bit more subdued if these seem a bit… bright.) Limited also has them as “ankle trousers,” and they also come in a bright green.  (There is also a matching blazer.)  The pant was $79.95, but is marked to $47.97 today — it’s available in regular, petite, and tall sizes.  Cassidy Bootcut Pants

The Express pants go up to size 18, but here’s another pair that goes up to size 22.

Coffee Break: Studded Pumps

Maiyet Studded PumpsThere are some serious sales at the Barneys’ Warehouse sale online — they are now offering an EXTRA 70% off all clearance.  These are final sale prices, alas, but there are some crazy deals to be had, particularly among the shoes.  (Ladies who wear size XS in clothes, you’re going to make out like bandits.)  I like these Maiyet studded 4″ pumps, which push the boundaries a bit for work but, I think, would still work on a casual day.  They were $995, but then marked to $359 — so with the additional 70% off they come down to $107.70.  Nice. (Also fun: this skirt.) Maiyet Studded Pumps

P.S.  Kate Spade Saturday is apparently shutting down — this doesn’t seem to be reflected in sale prices on the website yet, but you may want to start perusing the selection of the reader recommended A satchels.

How to Interview in a Snowstorm

snowstorm-interviewWhat should you do if you have an interview — in a snowstorm?  Reader A wonders:

Can you do a post on what to wear to an interview during a snow storm?

I have a few interviews set for this week, but with the approaching east coast storm, I don’t want to walk into an office with my winter coat, scarf, hat, laptop, etc. plus a huge bag just for snow shoes (not to mention awkwardly changing into heels nearby or in the lobby).

Do you recommend just bringing an extra bag to change shoes or do you have another trick or solution?

We’ve talked about general interview tips, as well as how to look professional in cold weather as well as a New York winter, but not this particular situation.  Note that “professionalism” includes your own judgment about how to dress appropriately for the weather, so I wouldn’t worry about wearing “normal” interview attire TOO much — if you have to leave a bag with snowboots at the hiring office (or bring it with you to the interview), it isn’t the end of the world.  That said, I did come up with a few tips for you:

Thursday’s TPS Report: Double Weave Notched Bateau Dress

Our daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices.

Talbots Double Weave Notched Bateau DressTalbots is having some pretty crazy sales right now — there are so many markdowns, and so steep, it’s tough to find anything over $50.  That said, Thursdays are usually the day where we feature something priced $50-$100, so I hunted around for you guys, and behold: this beaut. Not only is it a steep markdown (originally $159!), but it looks great for work — I like the notched bateau neckline, the set in waist, and the full lining. It’s available in black, red, and teal, in sizes 2-20 for misses, petites, and one lucky plus size: 22W. If the hem looks a bit long for you (38.75″), I might try the petite instead (which is still longer than most dresses, at 36.75″). (I note that the care instructions say “dry clean,” not “dry clean only” — so I might try it in the delicates cycle of my washing machine after a few wears.)  Talbots Double Weave Notched Bateau Dress
