Workwear Hall of Fame: Sleeveless Ponté Sheath Dress

Our daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices.

washable ponte sheath dress for workWe’ve featured this dress in a million roundups for sheath dresses, but I don’t think we’ve ever featured it for our morning workwear reports — at least not in its most basic version, pictured.  If you’re not familiar: this is the Lands’ End ponte sheath dress.  It has pockets. It’s washable. It’s $69-$79 full price (but on sale today!). It comes in petite, tall, and plus sizes. It is so wildly popular that it comes out in a zillion new patterns and colors every season, as well as an offshoot of dresses that are very similar but for some additional design element, like a keyhole neckline or sleeves.  Today, regular, petite, and tall sizes are on sale for $40-$45. Nice! Sleeveless Ponté Sheath Dress

(There’s free shipping on $50+ — if you’re looking for something else to add to your cart, consider their shaped scoopneck tees, or the reader favorite supima cardigans. If you happen to be busty they have a great selection of DD/DDD swimsuits.)

Suit of the Week: Donna Karan

amazing pants suit vintage vibe donna karanFor busy working women, the suit is often the easiest outfit to throw on in the morning. In general, this feature is not about interview suits for women, which should be as classic and basic as you get — instead, this feature is about the slightly different suit that is fashionable, yet professional.

WOW. Sometimes a suit just takes your breath away, you know? This suit reminds me a bit of the suit that Sheryl Sandberg wore for her famous TED talk (Donna Karan as well!) — it’s interesting and feminine but still says B-O-S-S. Gorgeous, amazing, and I love the slight vintage vibe. (My only quibble with the styling: I haaate sandals with suits — it makes me cringe every time I see them together.) The jacket (Donna Karan Long-Sleeve Peplum Jacket, Black) is $1,795, and the pants (Donna Karan Pull-On (?!?) Wide-Leg Trouser) are $795.

Oooh, not a suit at all, but this cashmere wrap top from Donna Karan is also awesome. The excellence of all of these pieces makes me sad that Donna Karan herself stepped down and they’re focusing on the DKNY brand instead (at least, last I heard; here’s a NYT article on point).

The Hunt: White Tops for Spring

white tops for workSure, we all know what basics professional women are supposed to have in their closets, but if you’re buying one for the first time or replacing one you’ve worn into the ground, it can be a pain to find exactly the right incarnation in stores. In “The Hunt,” we search the stores for a basic item that every woman should have.

I would guess that 60% of my closet — if not more — is black. White appears far less frequently — but even I love to herald the beginning of spring by buying a few new white tops every year, and (if they’ve held up well enough), pulling out old favorites from previous years.  The white blouse, of course, is a classic — but sometimes you want something that isn’t quite as fussy or as formal as a blouse with collars or buttons. (If you’re on the hunt for a basic button-front blouse, a silky collared blouse, or a basic tee or shell to wear beneath a suit, check out our latest roundups on those topics.) I never know what to call these items (tops? shirts? white non-blouses?) but I do think they’re something that makes every outfit more versatile — and can be an easy way to take your more formal suits away from the dreaded “I’ve got a secret interview today” territory. Of course I am on #teamwhitecamisole as well, but that’s me…

In my mind, white tops break down into basic general categories, which I’ll lay out below…. I’ll note at the outset that a lot of these tops come in colors other than white, which show the details FAR better than the white versions, at least online. In fact, the very fact that there IS a white option may be hidden because the color doesn’t show up against your screen — so use the dropdown color picker menu if in doubt (screenshot of what I mean here).

Wednesday’s Workwear Report: Sheath Dress with Front Peplum

Our daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices.

blue peplum sheath dressThis dress from Lafayette 148 New York is on a great sale at Neiman Marcus — and it’s almost entirely sold out in the black, which always suggests to me that there are no hidden fit issues.  I like the sleeves, the jewel neckline, and I think the peplum is an interesting detail (though I wish the detail continued to the back of the dress). The grayish blue color looks great to me — I’d wear it with neutrals like black, white, gray, navy — and call me crazy but I think a pop of bright springy yellow would be fun if you wanted a color somewhere (ooh, or a bright red lip).  It was $448, but is now marked to $134.  Yes!  Lafayette 148 New York Sheath Dress W/ Front Peplum

Coffee Break: Teri Tote

black shoulder bag for work VinceWhere is the line between “tote” and “large shoulder bag”? This is billed as a tote, but to me I would call it a large shoulder bag — albeit one you could probably stuff a letter-sized file or two into. Either way, this tote is winning rave reviews — and it’s only $250! For once I’m not featuring the colorful version, but note that it also comes in a mint green and a blushy “rich cream.” Vince Camuto ‘Teri’ Tote
