I’m one of those annoyingly practical types who carries an umbrella everywhere during spring and fall, when surprise showers always seem imminent. I recently got a new mini umbrella and was amazed at how heavy it was, compared to my old, super lightweight umbrella (which I think was a sister to this one). So for today’s coffee break, I’m recommending this umbrella — I like the colorful black-and-red pattern on it, the fact that it folds to just 6″, and the weight: a mere 7 oz. Amazing. I never feature longer earrings for the office because I feel like 95% of them are inappropriate for office wear, primarily because they’re distracting. But when a reporter asked me recently why, I couldn’t quite put my finger on it, finally settling on “dangly earrings that move when you speak are distracting.” But readers, what are your thoughts — would these longer stationary earrings be acceptable for work? I always love the accessories at ShopBop, and they’re always what I hit first when ShopBop has some of its legendary sales. This marble necklace is only 30% off, but the bright red marbles and the interwoven chain make a great statement piece for the office. Honestly, today I’m torn between two different Samanta pumps, both available at Amazon. The bad news: there are less and less winter deals to be had, which I suppose is understandable given that it’s well into May.  The good news: these beautiful suede kitten heels from Donald J Pliner, available in both “expresso” (pictured) and black, are still on sale. Yes, they’re suede, so you may want to shelve them until fall, but I think they’re classic, beautiful shoes that you’ll wear for years. I’ve been eyeing these lovely waffled scarves on sale at Brooks Brothers. They’re available in five colors (black, pictured, as well as navy, beige, forest green, and ivory), and made of cashmere and silk. At 12″ wide it’s a little on the skinny side to use as a wrap, but depending on the weight of the scarf I would still probably try it on colder summer nights and in chilly offices. Yes, today’s Coffee Break recommendation is a wool coat — and yes, I’m aware it’s May. But come on: the off season is a great time to snap up sales on quality pieces, including this adorable coat from Soia & Kyo, a sister brand to Mackage.  I like the fact that it’s a bit different than your usual coat, but doesn’t look like it’s sacrificing warmth for fashion. I like the seaming, the buttons, and the collar, which you can wear down (as pictured), or buttoned up into a funnel neck.
