For the busy woman, shopping online is sometimes all the schedule will allow. (Whose bright idea was it to have store hours from 10 AM to 8 PM, anyway?) It’s actually our preferred mode of shopping — so long as we don’t pay for shipping. For some reason, no matter how great of a discount we’re getting on the clothes, we still feel like we’re being swindled if we have to pay shipping. (We’ve come to think of it as a tax for trying things on.)
One of the reasons we’ve always been against shipping prices is because it seems like it’s for the novice, the uninitiated — there is ALWAYS a free shipping code out there, it seems. But how to find? There are way too many coupon sites are there to wade through, and some of them are so poorly designed you feel like spyware or worse is being installed on your computer as you try to figure out how to save $10 on shipping.
This is why we’ve come to know and love our favorite coupon site: Retail Me Not. In addition to having a pretty great round-up of coupon codes (in our minds, if they don’t have it, NO ONE DOES), they tell you the percentage of people who have gotten the coupon to work. They also allow comments without making people sign in, which is helpful if you can’t figure out why someone else could get the code to work and you can’t. It’s our first-stop-shop for times when we’re looking for a coupon code or a great discount.

Sure, Bird may be a likely suspect for various magazines’ round-up of New York’s greatest boutiques, but we’ve never been there. Blame it on the fact that we’re mostly Manhattan girls or just lazy shoppers, but either way — having looked through the site’s collection (which has some serious sales right now due to a moving sale), we’ll have to make a trek out sometime soon. The owner, Jennifer Mankins, got her start as an assistant buyer from Barneys New York; she also was head buyer for Steven Alan before she helped start women’s clothing label Charlotte Corday. She opened Bird in 1999, where she features “women’s apparel, shoes and accessories by up-and-coming designers from New York, Los Angeles, Paris and London, as well as Japan and Scandinavia.” In addition to the online shops, she currently has one shop in Park Slope and another in Cobble Hill; her largest store yet will be opening in Williamsburg sometime soon.

Vive la Reine is a new clothing company out of San Francisco helmed by Elle Kuvvetli, who knows what professional women wear: she worked as an accountant for Pricewaterhouse Coopers and did a stint as the VP of Finance for a start-up software company. After some thought, she decided to pursue her dream of fashion design, and opened her own company with clothes geared toward professional women — Vive La Reine.
Browsing through her collections, we like what we see. There are tons of pieces here that are classic but feminine — some are downright sexy. (Jacket required for the office!) A lot of them are reversible, so you get both a black top and a gray top, which is perfect for travel. In general, some great pieces. Their Fall 2007 collection is currently 30% off, and for Corporette readers they’re also offering 20% off the Spring 08 collection with code spring20 at checkout.

blaec is an online boutique, with a store based in Santa Barbara. According to the site:
blaec has been in business since 1999, specializing in stylish everyday-wearable pieces. Many of our items are black, because a wardrobe based around black makes it easy to dress with style — whether you’re dressing up or down. Blaec is old English for black, and is pronounced like black. We are located in downtown Santa Barbara. We pride ourselves on excellent customer service–see our customer ratings on Yahoo.
Yesterday was our first time shopping the site, and it will not be the last. There are tons of great, wearable pieces — appropriate for the office or elsewhere — and the sale section is noteworthy.
Some of our favorites, after the jump…

It seems like in a matter of weeks we have gone from total ignorance of the luxury sample sale sites on the Internet to complete overdose. These sites can be great for the woman who loves a sale but is constantly stuck in the office, so we thought we’d give you a round-up. Here’s the ones we know about, and our take on them — please comment and tell us what you think of them, also. (Full text after the jump.)
