Suit of the Week: Theory Novelty Suit

We like this “novelty” jacket from Theory.  We like the wool-linen blend, which strikes us as unusual but great for unpredictable weather.  We especially like the steel-gray color of it; it’s strong yet feminine.  We would wear it with a more structured shirt than the one shown here — perhaps a simple tee-shirt in white or a royal blue. The jacket (Theory Novelty Blazer) is now $276 at Saks.com (was $395); the pants (Theory Novelty Pants) are available for $206.50 (were $295). Don’t forget the Saks sale, going on — you can get gift cards worth anywhere from $25 – $450, depending on how much you spend.

Suit of the Week: Paul Smith Black & Blue Classic Swirl Suit

We are sad to say that we’re behind the ball on this one — the suit is nearly sold out (if you’re a size 44, you are very, very lucky!). But oh, how we love it: a classic black suit with just the teeniest bit of insouciance with the classic Paul Smith swirl in the piping on the lapel. It’s even wool! Gorgeous, gorgeous. It’s marked down nearly 70%, too: it’s currently $345, with an extra 20% off today, bringing it down to $276 at Couture Candy. Paul-Smith Sale Black & Blue Classic Swirl Suit Black

Suit of the Week: Jones New York Pinstriped Pant Suit

Jones New York Pinstriped Pant SuitIt is another week without a really standout suit — perhaps the economy is driving everyone towards more basic suits? In any event, we like this pinstriped pant suit from Jones New York, available at Macy’s. In particular, we like the chalk stripes, and the three pockets and buttons.  It comes with a knit shell, which we would jettison immediately, wearing the suit with something more luxurious, such as silk or cashmere.  Available at Macy’s for $320 (for both pieces).  Jones New York Pinstriped Pant Suit

Suit of the Week

This is a great basic suit for spring, summer, and fall — we love the double-edged collar, the darts for shaping, and the simple and clean skirt. The “acorn” color is a nice counterpart to white or pastel shirts in the spring and darker blues and blacks in the summer and fall. We’d even try it with a simple red t-shirt or blouse if we were feeling a bit saucy. The jacket is available at Dillards for $199 (Antonio Melani “Oceana” Jacket) and the skirt is available for $119 (Antonio Melani “Perch” Skirt).

Suit of the Week

We’re loving this vintage-inspired skirt suit from Rebecca Taylor.  All the little details make it so gorgeous and interesting:  the notched collar, the puffed sleeves, the pickstitch detailing, the backpleat on the jacket, and we love, love the defined waist.  The fabric flower/boutonniere is actually our least favorite part, if only because you have to treat it as an accessory and therefore can’t accessorize that much more once you’ve got it on — we’d say earrings or necklace and you’re good to go.  The jacket is available at Nordstrom for $365 (Rebecca Taylor ‘Coco’ Jacket) and the matching skirt (Rebecca Taylor Slim Skirt), which also has a backpleat, is $220.

Suit of the Week: Liz Claiborne New York Diagonal Stripe Suit

Liz Claiborne New York Diagonal Stripe SuitWe’re intrigued by this suit from Isaac Mizrahi’s new collection for Liz Claiborne New York. As Liz Claiborne Chief Creative Officer Tim Gunn might have said: it’s a lot of look. Accordingly, we’d probably wear it as separates except for a few specific circumstances where we want to look extremely young and hip and in-your-face creative. (So: not to court or to depositions or most meetings where you’re the underling.) The diagonal stripe sleeveless dress is $89, and the matching cardigan (which is structured enough that we’re counting the whole outfit as a suit) is $119. Alas: The t-straps, which we love, aren’t available until March 10th.
