Holiday Weekend Open Thread

Something on your mind? Chat about it here.

Who has great New Year’s Eve plans, or other holiday plans requiring awesome outfits? Regale us with your stories — and share what you’re wearing.  Even if you’re having a chill night at home or with a few friends at a house party on New Year’s Eve, I like the idea of wearing something festive for the occasion, and this sequin top from Joie not only looks fabulous, but it’s also on sale: it was $268, but is now marked to $160. That may seem like a lot, but considering a bad sequin top is almost disposable, I’ll bet the fashion math works out on this Joie one.  Joie Gowa Sequin Tank

Looking for a more affordable version? I love this sexy mesh/sequin version for $68, or this very similar $99 version. On the plus size, this halter top looks amazing.

P.S. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all who celebrate! We’re going to be on a reduced schedule next week, rounding up our favorites from the past year (here are our roundups from 2015, 20142013, 2012, and 2010) — and of course reporting on any good sales as we see them, including Nordstrom’s big clearance sale starting Dec. 26. A safe and happy holidays (and New Year) to everyone.

skinny-stretch-cordsSomething on your mind? Chat about it here.

JAG pull-ons are reader favorites, and these stretch skinny cords are nice and warm and will be comfortable to wear this winter. I don’t know about you, but I’m getting into the mode where I just want to laze about and binge watch Westworld and chill out (and I guess wrap presents and stuff like that). I don’t want to go out and do any more things — I’m tired. These are great, comfortable, cozy pants for Netflix-ing your way through the weekends and the holidays, but if you want to go out and look nice for a casual weekend, they work for that, too. Except for the “artichoke” color, these are only available in lucky sizes (petite and regular) because they’re on sale for $48 from $74. The other options are black, elderberry, midnight, smokey grey, and toffee. However, there’s a really great teal that’s not marked down and still available in all sizes 0-16. Here’s a plus-size option.

Update: note that Amazon has them as well, with some lucky sizes marked as low as $13!

purple-rain-bootSomething on your mind? Chat about it here.

I spied this rain boot for the first time during our roundup of weatherproof shoes for work and thought, huh, that’s interesting. Then I saw that not only is the boot really highly rated — but they have multiple colors. Most are pretty subdued colors like black — there’s also a matte navy that’s particularly nice — but: there’s a glitter boot and this gawrgeous purple boot (pictured) which, for some reason, I cannot get out of my head. Hmmn. I like it for the weekend, but I could also see you having fun with it at a casual office. They’re $54, available at Nordstrom. Jeffrey Campbell ‘Stormy’ Rain Boot

These are really fun lounge pants — I like the polar bears and the North Pole signs. (The other five designs include reindeer/snowflakes, bunnies on sleds, an “ugly sweater” sort of theme, a snowflake pattern, and reindeer silhouettes). Also, the fabric doesn’t look really heavy. A lot of Christmas-themed pajamas are fleece and just really heavy and hot, and these are made from a lighter thermal cotton-blend. The lounge pants are available in XS-XL in regular sizes as well as plus sizesPJ Salvage Thermal Lounge Pants

Psst: Did you guys see that Nordstrom has started their Black Friday sales early? I’ll try to do a round-up later today… lots of great stuff.

fleece-leggingsSomething on your mind? Chat about it here.

Even though it’s not super cold yet, the reason we’re posting these fleece leggings now is because they sold out last year. (So if you’re interested, buy now.) Hue is one of my favorite brands — these leggings are comfortable, they keep their shape, they have functioning pockets in the back and a little coin pocket in the front, and they wash well. There are just no issues with these at all! And of course the fleece makes them nice and warm in wintertime. Fleece Lined Leggings

If you’re looking for a great plus-size option, try these. (Alas, though Hue sometimes offers plus sizes for its leggings, it doesn’t seem to right now.)

Also: If you’re not yet a member of Amazon Prime, they’re offering a today-only deal: save $20 and get a full year of Prime for $79. Nice!

velvet-pumpSomething on your mind? Chat about it here.

Velvet, as we’ve noted before, is huge this season. I think it can be a bit much for work –but this Sam Edelman pump looks gorgeous for holiday parties. I love the sangria velvet, and it’s a fun way to get a pop of color. This shoe, which is $119 at Nordstrom (where it’s getting good reviews), has a 3.75″ heel. It comes in many other colors including several suede versions, a snake print and an ikat print, and your basic black (in both suede and leather). The sizes still in stock are 5.5-11. Sam Edelman Hazel’ Pointy Toe Pump

Psst: If you get a chance this weekend, don’t forget to watch His Girl Friday — we’ll be discussing it Tuesday for the next movie in our series of working girl movies. Here’s a link to the Rotten Tomatoes page, where it has a 97% fresh rating.
