Oh that’s lovely!
The consensus is that we’re not supposed to get any work done today, right? Just refresh Votecastr? Relieving the 2004 election American abroad experience – went to buy falafel and the shopkeeper heard my accent and said, ‘So….’

Thanks for the note about Of Mercer, Kat! I’m going to check it out.
I can’t focus at all this morning! I was the first person to vote at my polling place this morning. There were probably 30 people there when I left, which is more than I’ve seen at that time before. I’m guessing turnout will be really high.
I don’t own a pantsuit but I played Beyoncé on repeat on my way into work. I keep getting a little teary-eyed thinking about it. Voting for a woman president in the general election was even more emotional than I anticipated.
CPA Lady
I got emotional about it too. Last night I was sitting on the couch reading stories on pantsuit nation and just bawling. I’m so excited for the country and for my daughter, who will (if all goes well) never question whether or not she can be president because she’s a girl. I have never seen such high turnout at my polling place either. By 8:00 a.m. there were about 70 people in line.

My grandmother was born before women can vote and she voted last week for Clinton. I got a little misty-eyed this morning thinking about it.

Voted early and it was cool to feel the energy in the air. My first time voting early and there was a long line, too! Friends of mine in Chicago said they waited 4 hours last night, far longer than ever before. I’m the child of immigrants and love voting, just like they do. There is something so inspiring about people prioritizing our government and the freedoms, rights, and privileges we have in this country. Particularly inspiring to vote for a woman President for the first time, particularly in defiance of such a pig. Trump has made me recall every sleazy boss and se*ual assault I have felt and then felt guilty about as though it were somehow my fault. At times, it has felt like a deluge of all the worst memories of being a young woman in the workplace. Clinton has made me recall every mentor (man or woman really but especially women) who kick a$$, take names, and promote others to do the same. She has made me recall my best moments where no matter what, I wouldn’t quit.

I started crying as I walked away from the polling place. Didn’t see that coming at ALL. I am wishing I had taken my daughters in with me.

Also emotional here! It’s been ramping up for the last few days (fine, weeks), but this morning I woke up and started to read pantsuit nation posts before I even got out of bed, started tearing up, and was crying tears of joy in the shower. I knew this would mean a lot to me, but I didn’t expect to react this strongly.

Yay! My dad wrote ME in on his ballot for Presiendt!!!! I can’t beleive it. He said he could NOT vote for either of the two candidates and thought he would give ME a start in the political arena. Can you imagine! I am so humbeled! Even Grandma Leyeh thought he was being silly! I wonder if I will be in the new’s?

I’m not a Hillary fan *at all* but was tearing up to see a lady on the ballot, and brought my two girls. Pretty cool day. #notwithhim.

94 years of us women voting and it’s taken this long for a woman candidate. I preached about it to my 2 boys and girl on the way to school. We live in a great country and both genders can do what they dream of. Hoping we make history today, ladies. Make it a great day and God bless America!

*94 years of us white women voting, but far less than that for women of color.
There was an African American woman in her 20s at my polling station rocking a white pants suit and my eyes welled up.

I went first thing this morning and came home and told my 8-year-old daughter that I voted for a woman for POTUS. I don’t even have words to describe how the look on her face made me feel about this election. My husband is taking her with him to vote this afternoon. She’s going to remember the election that brought us the first female President.

Can I vote if I just moved and my address changed? My new voting district is different.

Have you updated your driver’s license yet? In my state, I think you just check a box to update your voter registration when you get your new license. Which means you can vote in your new district.

+1 for 866-OUR-VOTE. It’s a non-partisan election hotline that can answer any and all questions about how and where to vote.

A little late to be asking this, no?
Anon
I would say not late to be asking. Better to ask now and figure it out than to not vote at all. The polls will still be open all day.
anon in SV
No, it’s not too late. Good to ask today, and there’s plenty of time to ask 866ourvote and find out what you need to do to make sure your vote counts.
Laura B
Definitely call the number above. In my state you can do this, but need to bring something with your name and new address on it (like a utility bill I think). It’s going to be different state to state.

My open concept office is a polling place. Can they really expect me to accomplish anything today?
ITDS
Wow. How is that supposed to work? In our state, the polling places are only open for voting, so schools/church/etc. are not open for business as usual, so that only voters and poll workers are present. Can you really see people voting? What’s to stop you “intimidating” them from your desk?
Anon for This
The voting is in the in the break room, so you can see the booths through the great big glass window, but the room itself is more shut off.
The line goes behind the desk area in the office.

I work for a University, but my building also houses a senior center and is owned by the city. It’s a polling place, too. I had to enter via a different door because I couldn’t get in through my usual door.

Husband: “Jeans wouldn’t have done the trick?”
Me: “Nah, this is brighter”
Husband laughs.
Monday
That’s what I thought as well with the blue dress.
I’m with clients today so I can’t wear anything partisan, but I was hoping for one of the Spanish language voter stickers as a subtle message. Alas no stickers at my polling place!
Sydney Bristow
I had to ask for mine this morning. The guy who opened the roll asked me if I had a baby and then handed me 2 stickers even though I responded no. I’m holding onto the extra for now in case a coworker didn’t get one but if it isn’t needed, I’ll have one on my coat and one on my shirt. I never got stickers when I voted by mail so I’m a little over excited about getting them now.
Anonymous
The pollworkers always make a big deal out of my daughter and give her a sticker when I take her with me to vote, but this morning the lady handing out stickers did not offer her one. I asked, and she said very seriously, “I can only give you one sticker.” Way to encourage future voters, lady!
Anonymous
I voted early and asked for two stickers – one to wear that day and one for election day. The pollworker gave me a handful and said no one else had taken them.
If pollworkers don’t even know what the sticker policy is from place to place… I can’t imagine there will be any problems with voter ID, right?!

Can anyone suggest where to buy 100% silk blouses or shirts? Unfortunately my fondness for natural fibers is a bit high for my budget, but I’m willing to check the “sale rack” frequently. But what sites would people recommend?
EM
Winter Silks dot com
ITDS
I got a Pure Collection catalog which had a lot of pretty silk blouses at what seemed like reasonable prices.
Pears
Nordstrom Rack occasionally. They often have Equipment (which def does not fit me lol), DVF (ditto), and Eileen Fisher (love!).
Anonymous
+1
I also scour the racks at Marshalls.
Hot flashes
Thanks for the recommendations. I’ll look for those brands at nordstroms rack, and I’ve never heard of pure collection, so I’ll definitely look!
Unfortunately I’ve had terrible experiences with Wintersilks. I say this not to argue but a bit of psa: they have repeatedly sold out of the item I ordered and not alerted me. No clothes, no refund, unless I call them to find out what happened. They do have lovely stuff though so I’m glad if other people have had better luck!
RR
Not cheap, but Lafayette 148 has lovely silk blouses.
Marshmallow
Everlane. I have a few of their silk button-downs and they’ve held up well.
Anonymous
I find that buying cheaper silks and not washing carefully/steaming/dry cleaning leads to a shabby looking product. Now I look for better quality synthetics that are practical, wash well, and are instyle.
Silk blouses
Joie shows up with some regularity at Nordstrom Rack, Off Fifth, Last Call, etc. I’m a short, hourglassy pear with narrow shoulders (Eileen Fisher can be a bit boxy on me; I suspect Wintersilks would be too, based on their measurements), and Joie isn’t all home runs, but they have nice stuff that I find to be consistently worth trying.
Wehaf
If you are open to vintage blouses, etsy or dedicated vintage clothing sites may have nice affordable options, although things will be a bit more hit-or-miss and you may have to put more time into sorting through listings. Right now a search for “100% silk blouse” on etsy comes up with over 1000 results.
Hot flashes
Thanks everyone!

I recommend Everlane and Equipment. You can get them second-hand but in great shape on eBay.

What proof of ID can a polling place require? Does it vary by state?
Batgirl
It varies by state, unfortunately.

Yes, it varies dramatically by state.
big orange drink
Pretty sure it varies by state. Did not have to show ID in my state during early voting. And I do not expect to get any work done today. And I’ve teared up a million times already and did not wear my usual waterproof mascara.
Anon
My husband and I voted when the polls opened this morning – neither of us had to show ID. Not sure if that is normal for our state (we moved in September – always had to show in old state).
Anonymous
In my state (MN), if you are already registered, then you don’t have to show id. You just give your name and confirm your address.
Anonymous
It varies by state. Red states generally have stricter voter ID laws. I’m in a deep red state and you have to show government-issued photo ID.
Anon
Not a lawyer but I thought the Supreme Court said that’s illegal?
Anonymous
I think it depends on how the law is worded. The law in my state has been specifically challenged and upheld by the Supreme Court. There’s a way to cast a temporary ballet if you don’t have ID but the poll workers don’t advertise that fact and not many people know about it.
Anon for This
I’m in a VERY red state. We just have to confirm our address and spell our name. Then sign the voter book. I love doing that.
Anon
I voted this morning in a very red state, and was surprised to learn that a gun permit is a valid form of ID here.
Anonymous
Check out 866our vote. All voting laws vary by state, so no one on a blog can give you helpful info when we don’t know where you live
Blonde Lawyer
In many states if you don’t have the required ID, they are supposed to let you fill out an affidavit and vote and they investigate your vote after (I believe called a challenge vote) if the polls are close enough for the challenge votes to matter.
Most states also have a hotline to report voting issues if you are precluded from voting for some reason.
Q not about election
I’m going to Charlottesville over Thanksgiving. I know there have been several threads in the past about what to do there, but it seems like so much is closed that weekend! Suggestions on what will be open? If it helps, ‘y family isn’t wedded to a “traditional” Thanksgiving celebration/dinner; we just want to have a relaxing few days together.
Thanks and happy Election Day!
NY CPA
I spent Thanksgiving there when I was living there for grad school. If you DO decide you want a big Thanksgiving dinner, I would 1000% recommend Keswick Hall. It was a bit pricey but by far the most memorable Thanksgiving meal I’ve ever had — it’s gorgeous and the food was DELISH.
Monticello is open every day except Christmas.
UVA is playing Virginia Tech in football, which is a big rivalry game. While it’s an away game, it would be fun to find a good bar and watch the game if you’re into football.
Take a drive along Skyline Drive. From the National Parks website, it looks like it’s open all the time but visitors centers will be closed on Thanksgiving Day (open the rest of the weekend).
Charlottesville has lovely vineyards nearby. Call some and see if they’re open that weekend. Take a look at monticellowinetrail dot com. You can use the zip code 22903 to search (which is Charlottesville).
If you like hard cider, there are also some good cideries nearby. Take a look on Google and, again, give them a call to see if they’ll be open.
January
I never spent a Thanksgiving in C-ville, but you’re really making me want to go. Also, it’s only a few hours to Blacksburg if you really, really want to see the UVA-Tech game (although if you’re a UVA fan, I would actually not recommend that you do this).
Q not about election
Thank you! This is very helpful. Would you expect most restaurants to be open Friday-Sunday?
NY CPA
I think they would be but I’m not positive. I would definitely call ahead and check.

Not sure about what’s open/not but if you can, check out Lampo and the Alley Light. Had great meals at both.

If you’re in the mood for a hike and the weather is nice, Humpback Rock has fantastic views! The American Shakespeare Center in Staunton (1 hour away) is fabulous, though not sure what their schedule is that weekend (the website doesn’t seem to be loading right now).
In terms of food, Mas has amazing tapas and Alley Light has really good cocktails. The Veritas winery is really nice as well!

Even if all pantsuits are ugly – they are practical. Sorry not sorry that I don’t want to freeze in a skirt in the winter. Pantsuits weren’t even allowed in the Senate until 1993. So crazy that some of us think what women have to say matters more than how their legs are covered.

Non election related question here. Would any of you be willing to share your experiences with IUDs? Both hormonal and the non-hormal versions? I am considering getting one and would appreciate hearing about people’s experiences. I have had negative side effects from birth control pills in the past.
TIA!
Anon
Had the copper IUD for about a year. Had spotting approx. 50% of the time and very heavy periods. Bad news bears. Got it removed.
Anon
I had the copper one for 5 years (just had it removed to try for a second kid). I just had regular periods. I had had the arm implant before and I spotted for a year on that. I’ve heard of a lot of people having regular spotting with Mirena. It was important to me to be hormone free so I was very happy witht he copper one, but everyone’s body is different.
Anonymous
I started with Skyla about 4 months ago, and I was on depo for a few years prior to that. I’ve had no period at all since starting depo or switching to Skyla. I went through a lot of different pills in the 15 years I’ve been on BC – most of them only worked for me for about 6-12 months then adverse side effects kicked in (irregularity, uncontrolled cramping, vomiting – the works).
I am very pain tolerant but nearly crawled out of my skin when it was put in and the pain persisted all night. I had cramping on and off for about 2 weeks, but since then, nothing at all.
I’m early on, but so far, so good. I definitely feel better on this than I did on previous forms.
Amberwitch
I’ve had several IUDs over the years, and been very happy with them all. The last two have been Mirena/other hormonal IUD, and, apart from occasional spotting and very slight cramps, I’ve more or less stoppes menstruation completely.
The insertion and removal is a real pain though. The first couple of times I ended up in bed for the rest of the day. But a mix of paracetamol and ibuprofen beforhand makes it better. Never given birth, which may make it easier.
Recent research does point to an elevated risk of depression when using hormonal prevention, especially IUD. I’ve never experienced any side effects.
Pears
I’m so curious about this though. I just read the study last night and as it was purely observational, it did not occur for demographics. That is, the authors noted that institutionalized women were much more likely to receive depo injections and IUDs than institutionalized women, and these women were independently more likely to receive depressants. So who knows! But comparing depo and Mirena, depo is more likely to cause depression…but compared to the combination pill in different demographics. I don’t know!
Pears
*did not control for demographics.

I had Mirena for three years and then switched to Paraguard. I had no problems with Mirena, but wanted to switch to a hormone-free option. My periods are now heavier, but very closely resemble my periods in high school before I was on any BC. I did recommend it to a friend who is experiencing her third month of extremely heavy 10-day flows so it really varies by the person.
Laura B
This is my exact same experience, down to the years and the side affects. Love my IUD.
Not that Anne, the other Anne
On my second Mirena and it’s awesome. There was a bit of pain with insertion, of course, but I had no cramping or spotting after the first few days. I have a one-day “period” every two to three months.
pugsnbourbon
This matches my experience closely w/r/t insertion pain and timing of periods on Mirena. Getting my second one inserted was a much better experience overall than the first – I liked my doctor more and felt more relaxed. I am not planning to have children ever and am anxious, so I like that IUDs are very effective.
I do have pain around the time I ovulate – similar to pre-BC cramps. I’ve had a couple of ovarian cysts develop in the ~6 years I’ve had Mirenas, but my doctor isn’t terribly concerned about them.
Anonymous
In case you see this – is there any schedule to when the “period” comes? I’d much rather have a longer more predictable period than have to buy replace underwear every month.
POSITA
I was on the pill and fine for years, but had to change brands and the new low dose pill made me very, very emotional and ragey. I was a mess. I opted for the no hormone paragard and have been thrilled.
I had my first pre-kids and it did make me crampy and have heavy periods for the first year or so, but that decreased with time. I had it removed and got pregnant with kid no. 1 right away. Had another paragard inserted 12 weeks post partum. No side effects at all. Removed it and got pregnant with kid no. 2 a few months later. Got another one at 12 weeks post partum. No side effects. Nothing to remember. Love it!

I’ve had Paraguard for about 3 years. Periods are regular, if a little bit heavier, but I get killer cramps that I didn’t have before (I don’t think; I was on birth control pills prior and don’t really remember what periods were like before that). They’re bad enough I’m considering getting it taken out. They did, however, go away when I was taking spironolactone for acne (didn’t do a thing for my acne, so I stopped it, but I’ve considered asking for it just for the cramps.)
Anonymous
I had a mirena placed last summer. Most painful experience of my life (and I’ve had some rough ones) but it was very very brief and over quickly. Bad cramping for a few days that then settled down. Sometimes still get a little cramping here and there, or when running.
I spotted very occassionally for the first 6 months (talking, hours, didn’t even need a pantyliner) and haven’t had anything since then. I LOVE it.
The one thing I will say is that I do break out on my chin now. I have it controlled with my derm. But they also said while it could be the Mirena, it could just also be coming off oral BC which I had been on since age 16 – so never really knew what my body’s baseline was for acne anyway.
Baconpancakes
Also have a Mirena – was additionally the most painful experience of my life. I did have pretty bad cramping and bleeding for a good three months afterwards – and it was still absolutely worth it. After the first two years I stopped having any periods, and now I only occasionally have a single cramp or two every two to three months without bleeding.
Anon for this
I have had Mirena for three years. Insertion was painful (pro tip that I know now: take 2 ibuprofen 2 hours before your appointment and then a couple more 2 hours after). I had a lot of random cramping and heavy periods for the first six months and since then nothing at all other than very occasional spotting.
On other side effects (good and bad), the Mirena seems to have resolved my PMS/PMDD-type symptoms (for real and it is AWESOME) and has mitigated (although not completely eliminated) my bloating and my endo. That said, I have gottem some chin acne as well and have noticed that my hair is thinning a little, but my gyn says that those also could be the effect of “hormonal changes associated with perimenopause”. Joy.
big orange drink
I had mirena after my first child. Gardening was uncomfortable and I was never sure if it was the IUD or just that thing had shifted around after baby was born. I finally had it removed when we decided to try for #2. Instantly noticed that gardening was much more comfortable and after awhile, I noticed I felt better emotionally as well. When my OB went to remove mine she was fairly certain it had moved, which is one of the risks. I did not go back to an IUD after baby #2. All anecdotal but I’ve had several other friends who had theirs removed because they felt down/cranky/depressed all the time, or their periods were horrible at first and did not improve after several months.
I believe they are 100% covered by most or all insurance plans now, so it may be worth a try. I do remember that implantation and removal were both easy.
BeenThatGuy
My first IUD was a Mirena. I loved that my periods were very light and very short. But I was moody, depressed and had horrible acne. The acne was so bad that I was on antibiotics for 6 months to clear it up (and had the Mirena removed). I now have Paraguard. No acne, no mood swings but the periods are long and heavy (5-7 days). I’m much happier with Paraguard.
anon for this
I am about to get a Mirena (just waiting for it to arrive). I have one child, not sure about another. I had a long conversation with my midwife about Mirena vs Paragard. She said her removal rate on the Paragard is about 30% from people who don’t like the heavy bleeding, whereas the Mirena is less than 1% (people removing it for reasons other than ready to TTC).
Shananana
I’ve had Skyla for about 18 months, and am upset I didn’t do this earlier. I cramped badly the day of, then spotted and cramped off and on for about a month. Since then, I have spotted one day a month, and that’s it. I had terrible reactions to pills, and had a super irregular period plus PCOS. No hormones was not really an option, but neither was heavy hormones. Emotionally the most steady state I have been since puberty (I am 34) and no periods? Amazing.
My sister has had similar issues and tried the copper one in the past with bad results. Period for months on end, pain. She is considering trying Skyla now, after my better results.

Had the copper IUD for 4 years before having a kid, heavy period (but mine were always super heavy anyway) and otherwise no issues. Really liked it, and had another one after having a childm but the heavy periods led to anemia this time around. Swapped to a mirena which was horrific. Literally had multiple panic attacks and sever depression for the 3 months it was in. I also did not deal well with hormonal BC prior, which was the impetus for the first IUD. My husband is now looking into a vasectomy since I’m DONE with handling the BC.
lsw
Just want to say that IUD experiences vary so much from person to person. I also asked for a ton of anecdotal evidence and the main thing I learned is that everyone is different! Most people I talked to loved Mirena (I hated it) and were afraid of Paragard. I have Paragard and I love it. So YMWV!
Anon
I had the copper IUD (paragard) for 5 years. I can’t do hormonal BC. I loved it and will get it again. (Took it out for TTC reasons) The first year I had heavier periods and more pain and he first day of my period, but nothing ibuprofen couldn’t handle. My gyn told me about 20% of her patients with the copper one don’t like it and have it removed, which she thinks is high enough to recommend against it, but I thought it was the best option for me. No hormonal side effects is worth a lot.

Am on my 3rd copper (non-hormonal) IUD – no problems at all. Periods are just like before. Did not do well on the pill so did not want anything to do with anything hormonal.
Senior Attorney
I had a Mirena for 5 years and I loved it. The first month or so was a little rough — some spotting, mood swings, cramping — but after that it was awesome. My period went away and I loved not having to worry about birth control.
Anon
I have had both the copper IUD (paraguard) and the Mirena IUD. I had each for five years. I greatly preferred the Mirena to the copper IUD. My periods were very heavy and my cramps were very bad on the copper IUD. At the time I felt like my best option was to keep the copper IUD in (I didn’t have health insurance and it was the only one offered at the clinic I went to and I had paid about $500 out of pocket for it, I had already had one baby and was a single mom in school and I really didn’t want to risk another baby at that time. . .) so I just dealt with it.
Many years later, after I was married and had had two more children I got the Mirena and I LOVED it. My periods pretty much stopped except for very light spotting occasionally, like once every few months for a day or two. My cramps stopped and I think my PMS mood-swings were better too! I kind of miss it now but my husband got a vasectomy so no real need for it anymore.
Anon
I’m on my third Mirena – had one in between kids 1 and 2, and on the 2nd after baby (replaced after 5 years). I love it. Some slight discomfort on placement and removal, but nothing bad at all, and I’ve basically not had periods for years. I personally haven’t had any depression/hormonal issues.
Meg March
I’ve had a Mirena for 3 years now, and I love it so fricking much that my friends are exhausted from hearing me sing the praises. Placement was quick, although very painful. I got a lot of little pimples right along my jawline, which my dermatologist took one look at and immediately knew I’d switched birth control. She put me on an acne treatment, and besides that, I’ve had no problems whatsoever. I have no periods, no spotting, no mood swings, no cramps, no weight gain (or, at least, none related to birth control). I don’t have to remember to take a pill. However, I will say that this is definitely not something that works for everyone. I’ve had friends whose bodies expelled their IUD, which, uh, OUCH. I also have friends who have had some of the above side effects, so I got very lucky with only treatable acne.
EB0220
I had Mirena and hated it. Major pain during LGP and endless spotting. I gave up, had it removed and went back on the pill.
CKB
I hadn’t a copper iid after the birth of each of my 3 boys. Loved it. Was 100% effective. I had zero bad side effects. My period was lighter and cramps pretty much non-existent, but I’m assuming that was a childbirth side effect because it shouldn’t have been because of the iud.
Jen
I have the copper IUD (Paragard) and love it. I got it once before I had kids, had two kids, and loved it so much the first time around that I got it a few months after my second kid. I breastfed for over two years so it’s hard to say how it would have affected my periods immediately, but they are exactly like they were pre-kids. I have fewer menstrual cramps, though. I love it. I tell everyone to get one.
Do I need a new wardrobe?
While I’m wearing a pantsuit today for the obvious reason, I do have a fashion related threadjack that I’d like some input on. I took my corporate finance job two years ago coming out of public accounting. I’m a midlevel manager. My firm was on the dressy side of business casual, so no suits, but I wore mostly professional dresses and heels. The company that I work at now had a casual side of business casual dress code and jeans (which most people wore with sneakers and a tshirt!) on Fridays. So I’ve already been trying to make my existing clothes more casual in order to blend. Last week, the company wnt to a full casual dress code – the only things off limit are athletic/athleisure clothes and tshirts with writing other than that related to the company.
All my clothes are newish and in great condition, and fit really well. What do I do? I know how to mix and match more professional with more casual things, so that’s not really the question – at this point even a casual blazer with jeans looks too formal in my office. How often can I still wear a dress and heels without looking totally out of touch? Do I really need to get rid of my whole wardrobe and start over?
Anonymous
Mix it up a bit. Like dress with flat booties and casual accessories. Blazer with sleeves cuffed and t-shirt underneath and jeans with flats/wedges or even cute sneakers. Shop your closet. Work in some new more casual pieces and it will come together.
Anon
I’m in the same situation. I choose to continue wearing blazer/jeans etc. because that’s what I have and what I’m comfortable in. It’s not hurting anyone, right? Nothing wrong with wearing clothes you put time/effort/money into choosing!
Anonymous
Wear funky boots since it’s fall. Or add those long sweater coats over. You can have fun with this.
But boo for casual and not going all the way to athleisure — if I can’t wear the non-workout clothes from Athleta, I might as well just stick to work clothes.
Jeffiner
I work in a full casual office – we can even wear the athleisure stuff. In the past year I’ve started updating my wardrobe, and I’ve found that I just prefer skirts and blouses and such. At first people asked why I was dressing up, but now they just compliment me on cute clothes.
Most of my coworkers are men, so there are lots of khaki pants with polo shirts. Managers do dress a little nicer than worker bees, maybe a button up shirt instead of the polo. Most of the women here do mix up their wardrobes – jeans and a sweater one day, skirt and sweater the next, and the women are a bit dressier than the men.
Wow
Wow on the multiple reading comprehension fails. She specifically stated that she knew how to dress down dressier clothes, AND that’s she wasn’t looking for clothing suggestions.
Anonymous
Pretty sure that this is not a wow situation.
Wow
The idea that grown, educated professional women cannot read and comprehend two paragraphs is certainly a wow to me.
Anonymous
The idea that YOU cannot understand the subtext of every post is a wow to me.
The answer to her question is NO – you don’t have to get rid of your whole wardrobe – with everyone giving their experience.
And the answer to her other rhetorical question was of, course 2.75463 times per week. Or perhaps, don’t know what rhetorical means?
Wow
How is it rhetorical? An answer like, “once or twice a week likely won’t stand out too much” seems like an actual answer that would have been useful. A couple of the responses did answer the question with their own experience, but others completely missed hte mark, regardless of whatever “subtext” you are pretending this straightforward question had.

You don’t need to – I think that if you wear what you’re comfortable in, you’ll feel more comfortable, and that really influences (subconsciously!) posture, body language, etc. By all means wear the dresses and heels! You own them *and* you have an office to which to wear them! (I now work from home/ coworking space with a 20-minute walking commute, so have given up on the heels altogether.)
Frozen Peach
This is me to a T. My rule is that I can wear business dresses 2 days a week. Jeans at least 2 days a week. 5th day is a wildcard. No suits. It has genuinely made a difference in how my role is perceived. I finally bought more jeans when the ten billionth person said “you know, you CAN wear jeans…” I still dress more nicely than many of my colleagues, but I have found that it is meaningful to them that I’m dressed the way they are.
Rb
I am the dreamiest person in my office. Partly because I came from a un upper-business-casual office to a lower-business-casual office. And partly because I feel that slightly dressier is the correct way to dress for work.
I don’t mind it at all. People take me seriously, as they should, and I think being slightly more formally dressed is part of that.
Rb
*dressiest Haha OMG autocorrect! Thanks but no thanks.

Can anyone tell me what the fit issue is when one bra strap is always falling off? Just one, the same one, no matter how short or long I adjust it? Bras otherwise fit.
Anonymous
Might be that your one shoulder is narrow. Try cutting the strap off an reattaching it closer to the hooks in the middle of your back
LisaG
Have you looked at yourself in the mirror lately? Not trying to be snarky with that–it could very well be that your trapezius muscles are uneven….or that you hike up one shoulder…or something similar…
Anon
Posture issue?
Anonymous
This happens to me and I’m pretty sure it’s a combo of my sloping shoulders and one of the “girls” being smaller than the other on the strap slipping side.
NOLA
Yep, mine falls off my right, which is my smaller side.
tesyaa
Is it with every single bra? I had this issue with some older bras, but now I look for elastic straps and it’s not happening anymore.
LawDawg
This happens to me on the shoulder that I broke many years ago. That made it slightly sloped. Making the band tighter helps. There are also silicone thingies that wrap around the bra strap and hold it in place. They stick out a little if you are wearing sleeveless, but they do the job.
Anon
Do you routinely carry a heavy bag on one shoulder, and is that the one that has the strap falling off? I had to start switching shoulders (which I found to be almost impossible, so moved to a backpack).
AEK
Yes, I do carry a heavy tote every day on the other side. And I have bad posture. Hmm.
Hunchback
Yeah I had the same problem. I’ve been working with a physical therapist and trainer for years now. But I switched to pretty much all front close bras or ones that can be adjusted to criss cross. It’s so hard to fix your posture once you are older! Everything in my body affects it, my hips are weak, my glutes, I have to stretch out my shortened pec muscles, and my calves had knots in them that was also contributing.
I also went to the chiropractor for about 6 months which helped initially but the muscles needed to be fixed so now I work with that issue and see a chiro about once a month or so.

Does anyone have any no-show socks (i.e. the kind you would wear with ballet flats) that they like? Mine are constantly slipping down which I hate.
Sydney Bristow
I tried a bunch of different ones and found these to be the best. You might need to do the trial and error though as I think it depends on the shape of your foot. They are out of stock on Amazon, but you might be able to find them somewhere else: https://amzn.com/B00CYAY032
Nancy Raygun
Look for cycling socks. They have stratchy grippy spots all over to keep the sock on your foot.

These do a decent job for me.

Baconpancakes
I like these as well.
Also notable, I like the ones that aren’t the “Sleuth” but are just “No Show” for things like loafers and Keds. They stay on really well. http://www.zappos.com/smartwool-no-show-3-pack
BB
I like the Hue ones that Nordstrom sells. The no-show ones are thin and generally stay on pretty well. If your shoes have pretty good coverage, Uniqlo sells some that are very comfy and have this nice padding on the ball of your foot. They’re kind of big though, so they work for my loafers but not my ballet flats.
Calico
I love that padding on the Uniqlo ones, but they are huge on my size 8 foot and constantly slip off the ankle. I’m going to try Hue.
BB
Be a bit careful on the Hue from Nordstrom – they have 2 that are named the same thing “Hue No Show” socks, but they are actually different…or at least, they used to be! The one where the photo says “Perfectly bare” are light and small and work for pretty open pumps. The other ones are thicker and larger and I use them for loafers and large ballet flats.
I didn’t think about the sizing on the Uniqlo ones, but makes sense. I think they are one size and fit perfectly for my 9.5 size foot, which is an odd size to default to!

Cat
They’ve sold out with so many bloggers that I don’t like them anymore, but friends that have them think they’re still great quality. I am wary of the waxed cotton (how do you ever clean it?!) though.
“The look for less” could be a JCrew downtown field jacket.
CountC
For waxed cotton, you brush the dirt off and wipe down with cold water. As long as you aren’t using hot water, you’re fine.
NY CPA
You dont really “clean it” per se. I just wipe it down with a damp paper towel if I get something on it.
Runner 5
I have a Fat Face jacket from a couple of seasons ago which is very similar. Good enough for me.

I have the Bedale and I love it! I wear it constantly in spring and fall. I’ve had it for about 7 years (with tons of wear during those 7 years) and it has held up extremely well.
Basically this is a lifelong coat if you take care of it. I have family members who’ve had theirs for 25+ years and they’re still in great condition.
I send it once a year back to Barbour to get re-waxed (about $40-50 I think?), but you could do that yourself if you buy the wax and have the time. I did get one tear in it (the pocket caught on something), but they were able to repair it with a patch that you dont even notice. They can basically repair any part of it.
NYCer
Yep, I have one and I love it. It is a fall and spring time staple, and has held up well for the 5+ years I have had it. I wear it to work and on the weekends.

Recommendation please: lipstick that lasts. And doesn’t completely dry out my lips. I love the look of a pop of color – don’t love the color transfer all over my water bottle all the time. I know nothing will be perfect, but what’s the best you’ve found?
Scarlett
I forget what they’re called, but there’s a type of liquid lipstick that will stay on all day and dries into your lip. I wore it for my wedding and it was a little weird because you don’t feel a lipstick at all but there’s color.
Anonymous4
I think what I wear that’s similar to this is a lip stain. I buy cheap makeup so I use CoverGirl Outlast lip stain when I wear it – once it dries I don’t have much problem with it coming off, and it comes in pretty bold colors.
Nancy Raygun
Revlon Colorstay Overtime works for me. It’s like painting your lips with acrylic paint. I fell asleep with it on last Friday and in the morning it still looks pretty good. hahaha.
Susan
Check out Tarte Power Pigment. I have the Flush shade – a really pretty, bright pink. It’s like a stain, but not as drying. If you blot really well, it’s still a strong color but it doesn’t transfer. If it’s too matte for you after blotting, you can always do a swipe of lip balm on top. (Like me!)
C. Ham
Sephora Cream Lip Stain in Always Red. I don’t find that it dries my lips out at all, and it doesn’t flake off like some of my other lip stains (looking at you, Colour Pop).

Loved this. When I saw the photo on Twitter, I started to get a little misty.
ImWithHer
I was looking at the Twitter results for ‘Susan B. Anthony’ and some people were pointing out that she didn’t want black people to get suffrage basically. Is that true? I wouldn’t be shocked given the time period. Wouldn’t black men already have the right to vote given the 15th amendment? In any case, I don’t think it makes her contribution less valuable and it’s super cool people are lining up by her grave.
Anonymous
I don’t know where that comes from. Her wikipedia page cites specific speeches where she supported the anti-slavery movement and the right for all to vote.
Sarabeth
It’s slightly more complicated than that. She was involved in the abolitionist movement, but after the war, she wanted to include women in the 14th and 15th amendments and did not support passing them without the inclusion of sex as a protected category. The women’s suffrage movement split over this issue, and during this period, Anthony and some of her allies took donations and formed alliances with Southern Democrats who were trying to stop black suffrage.
afdsfad
Okay . . . this does not sound as bad as twitter was making it sound. Yeah maybe the alliances with Southern Democrats isn’t ideal but women should have been included in the 15th amendment!
Sarabeth
Yeah, the question is whether not including women was reason enough not to pass the 15th amendment at all. Which, to me, is obviously a no.

Threadjack – recommendations for suede/leather spray/protector, please? Thank you.
Cb
I’ve never had great luck in doing this myself (it ends up sticky or uneven or I make a mess) but take them to a cobbler and they do it for me. Just picked my winter boots up yesterday (just in time, rumours of snow) and they look good as new.
Anonymous
I just get Kiwi or whatever is on sale at my local store. Look for one safe for suede. Just brush the suede well with a suede brush (or carefully with the scrunchy side of a sponge), spot clean if needed with a bit of vinegar in water, let dry. And then spray evenly and completely. Follow the directions for the distance to be from the shoe while spraying. Let dry well. Then spray a second coat.
My cobbler actually encouraged me to do it myself, and I save my cobbler for the major repairs. But certainly you can just pay your cobbler to do it yearly.
anne-on
Allen Edmonds (the men’s shoe store) sells an in house one that is awesome – does not smell horrific, doesn’t discolor the suede at all. You can also have a cobbler do it, but this is cheaper.

I can back up that this hotline is 100% non-partisan. I worked at a subset of this group answering the hotline in Philadelphia (https://www.seventy.org/) and it was a great place with a wide variety of viewpoints. We did not talk about candidates on the hotline – most of the questions we answered were things like, “I’ve been asked to show xyz as ID, is that required” or “I’ve been told I need to vote at x place instead of y place, or to fill out a provisional ballot, is that right?” However, we also occasionally had folks calling to report voter intimidation or just outright voter suppression that we were able to send the proper authorities to respond to. It really felt like we were all working for team democracy, not any specific party.

I’m generally terrible at drying my own hair. It is too heavy, mostly straight, and I get bored half way through drying it most days. I have to take photos for some organization materials in a few days and would like to figure out how to do my hair nicely once and for all (no time to hit up a dry bar beforehand). I suspect I need to invest in some products, but I have no idea what I need. What are your favorite DIY blowout products? Bonus points if I can grab it at Ulta on my home tonight!

If it is taking you a long time (which I’m guessing if you have long enough to get bored) the biggest issue might be your dryer. Yes, upgrading your dryer (Ulta does carry a pretty good selection) is more expensive than buying a product, but it can cut drying time in half or more.

I actually do have a good dryer, I think it is just the amount of hair I have. I’ve had stylists ask if I really needed it fully dry after getting a cut because it was taking too long for them also.

Do you have time to let it mostly air dry first? What happens when you put like a smoothening product in when its toweled dried, and then let it air dry and then finish off with the dryer and a brush. That way you won’t get bored because it won’t take so long to dry.
The Rachel
It would take most of the day if I waited for mostly air drying. It also seems to be puffier if I let it go partial and then hit it with a dryer. Is that what a smoothening product might help with?

Go get a blowout at a salon or DryBar-type place for this one day. They’ll make your hair look better than you’re going to be able to figure out in just a few days.
Anonymous
Let it dry overnight, big hot rollers in the AM?
Anonymous
This is what I do. I also have so much hair. It takes forever to get from shower to dry. When I go to the salon, they have 2-3 people blow drying my hair at the same time. Life is too short. I sometimes blow dry the roots around my face so they don’t dry weird, but usually I shower at night, sop up as much water as possible with the special microfiber towels, and go to bed with it still wet. Usually it’s pretty dry in the morning and if I want it to look good, I use jumbo hot rollers and let them cool while I get ready. Awesome hair and about 5 minutes actually spent on it.
Anon
If you have thick hair, how do you use hot rollers? My thick hair needs multiple sets, and it takes so long to put them all in. I just let my hair air dry wavy and use a curling wand. The wand is so much easier than hot rollers or a curling iron for me.
c
greetings, also lazy a.f. with short attention span.
I shower at night, put this in: https://eufora.net/product/pure-polish/ (I hate hair products, but this has worked for me), let it dry a little, put it in a loose braid, go to bed.
Blow dry for a few mins in the AM, and put it in big hot rollers.
Samantha
Second the advise for just this one occasion to go get a blow dry. Get it the previous day and don’t wash, if you don’t have time the day of.
Pesh
Since you have a lot of hair, use clips to separate it into sections and just do one section at a time. It may take awhile, but for this one day, you can power through. Separating it out will help prevent damp hair from co-mingling with dry styled hair, and helps make it more manageable.
Anonymous
When you do this approach, how do you avoid static from repeat rebrushing?
I also have thick, straight hair that takes forever to dry….
Anon
Kenra makes a blow-dry spray that I really like. It makes my hair smooth and I think it really does speed up dry time.

Distraction from the election? Help me pick a dress to wear to a rehearsal dinner this weekend! I have the Boden “sarah ponte dress” in pink, a Banana fit and flare dress in brighter pink with elbow-length sleeves, and an Asos floral sheath dress with cap sleeves. Also, WTF do I wear on top? It is November in MA so pretty cold!

BR (like this but slightly shorter sleeves) http://www.polyvore.com/cgi/img-thing?.out=jpg&size=l&tid=120888420

This one gets my vote because sleeves = warmer and brighter pink = more festive.

OR should I go dressier? It’s been a while since I’ve been to one! :)
Jeffiner
I’ll vote (ha!) for the BR dress, just because it has sleeves for warmth. I think the level of dressiness depends on where you are in the country, and the level of formality of the wedding. For more warmth, how about a cape top jacket? Its more interesting than a cardigan.

If you search for “WROC Susan B. Anthony live broadcast”, they are doing a facebook live from Mt. Hope Cemetery at Susan’s headstone. It’s kind of amazing to just listen to the activity there. People are waiting in line for hour 1+. Going to try and make it there myself later today.

There’s going to be a lot of drinking and crying today no matter what happens. Remember to stay hydrated, friends!

Today’s a great day to read this open letter from the Harvard Women’s Soccer team-responding to the “scouting” report from their male counterparts. YOU GO GIRLS!!!

What bag do you use as your under-the-seat carry-on bag when you travel for business? I hate putting my nicer purses on the ground where they can get dirty (from my own feet and clumsiness no less), so I’m thinking about getting a cheap nylon tote to serve this purpose. My longchamp lepliage frayed at the corners too quickly so I’m looking for something even cheaper than that but not too frilly/twee since I am often traveling with my partner(s).

I use a Lo & Sons OG (or OMG? can’t remember which one it is.
Hypothetical
Wow. I never realized until today how polarised this community was.
As a hypothetical, would you feel the same and get teary-eyed if it was Condi Rice? That’s a two-fer in terms of long standing minority groups who worked very hard to have the right to vote.
ml
Yes. Condi is also a smart, strong woman. I don’t agree with all of HRC’s politics or Condi’s but I’d be happy to see either of them in the White House. And I’d vote for either of them over Trump or similat, for sure.
emeralds
Agree.

Yes, I would feel the same and get teary-eyed. Probably more so if it were Condi.
Imwithher
Yes.
Anonymous
Absolutely. I’m a Dem but I admire Condi greatly, and I’d gladly vote for her (not just over the orange monster, but over any of the 17 Republicans who ran this year) and I’d be very emotional about it.
Erin
I am not teary-eyed at all. I voted for Hillary but I am not her fan and I sincerely hope she gets impeached in 2017.
I don’t understand the emotion of women who are so thrilled to vote for a woman – seemingly ANY woman. Then again, I work in a male-dominated industry. I worked at a firm with only one female partner and watched as she drove out virtually everybody (male or female) who had to work for her. I’ve had many fantastic bosses, but none were women. I am where I am because MEN hired me, trained me, and supported and mentored me…I truly cannot think of a single senior woman who provided me anything of value other than an example of how NOT to be.
So yeah, put me in the gender-neutral camp and color me mystified at the tears of joy.
Sydney Bristow
I think many of us are not excited to vote for just any woman or McCain/Palin would have had better results.
Anonymous
Independent, here. I specifically voted against McCain because of Palin in that election… If he’d picked a decent running mate, he would have had my vote. (Although I’m not sad Obama won, regardless. Or should I say, “irregardless.”). Proud to vote for Hillary today.
Amanda
Totally agree. Also, I don’t understand all of the hate for Hillary. Anyone who is against her has only ever explained to me that she is “corrupt” but can provide any proof to support their claim. The GOP has spent millions of dollars trying to prove this to no avail! #imwithher

This is a disturbing comment. Luckily, you won’t ever be my boss.
Erin
I have 3 fabulous women who are thrilled to report to me (see my earlier comment about learning what NOT to do from prior female bosses). You should be so lucky.
Anonymous
Paraphrasing Godzilla from yesterday – if you think that every female boss was awful but you’re great, you need to look in the mirror to find the common denominator. You wouldn’t be the first women who has a problem with women in positions of authority. Just because you’re woman doesn’t mean you can’t be sexist, as you so clearly set out in your post above.
Erin
Nice read comp fail. I didn’t say that every female boss was awful. I said that none of the truly great bosses were women. I had one female boss that I would have characterized as “great” until I got a new boss…a man…who reminded me what a “great” boss actually looked like. That female boss still works at my company and I’ve been specifically sought out by 4 people under her (split men and women) who are thinking about leaving the company just to get away. She micromanages and stresses people out. Meanwhile, all of my peers comment about how much better things are under the new leadership.
Like I said, I work in a male-dominated industry so my sample size is tiny. I acknowledge this. Frankly, I find it disturbing that my gender-neutral philosophy (forged in part by learning the hard way that same gender as me doesn’t mean “better”) is “disturbing” to anyone.
Erin
AND for a third anecdote:
How about the other female boss who asked me to cancel my first day off in 6 months, taken to entertain my visiting parents (they live 3,000 miles away and visit once every 2 years)…and when I suggested that either of X or Y could cover the work, stated “It is the weekend and X and Y have young children.”
Right. I am the common denominator. Somehow these situations are my fault.
Anonymous
Yes, your crazy boss who tried to support parents in the workplace with young children.
You lost any of the little credibility you had remaining when you relied on the notion that “all of my peers” in your male-dominated industry preferred a male boss to a female boss. Shocking.
Newsflash: there can be great female bosses and non-great female bosses. AND there can be great male bosses and non-great males bosses.
None of that means that many many women in this country are not justifiably delighted to vote for a woman politician for President who is one of the most competent individuals to ever run for that position.
Erin
“Newsflash: there can be great female bosses and non-great female bosses. AND there can be great male bosses and non-great males bosses.”
This has been my theme. Not a newsflash to me or any careful reader of my comments.
If “supporting parents with young children” means that the childless person **always** handles the late and weekend work, no exceptions, then yes I suppose I am that horrible woman who believes it should be otherwise once-in-a-blue-moon.
Erin
Know what my current (happens to be male) boss would have done? He would have done the work himself and protected my day off. Or run interference and gotten an extension on the unreasonable deadline. That is what I would do now as a people manager, for any of my direct reports.
Because a great boss understands that everybody deserves ONE DAY OFF every so often, whether they have kids or not.
Anonymous
yeah, you did a great job of clarifying that you’re not stereotyping all female bosses by saying “I truly cannot think of a single senior woman who provided me anything of value other than an example of how NOT to be.”
Erin
You may want to educate yourself on “anecdotal evidence.” When I presented my anecdotal evidence, I was not stereotyping all female bosses.
Anonymous
So what was the point of your ‘anecdotal evidence’ ? You’ve been afflicted with awful females bosses and only good males bosses and this is relevant to HRC somehow? Yeah, no.
Wow
I can only assume you’re a troll, because voting for her and yet hoping she gets impeached shows seriously faulty logic.
I would vote for Condi over many other candidates. And I would certainly feel emotional about someone being both woman AND black getting elected President. One day, maybe….
Anonymous
Gender-neutral but you think she will be impeached? You’re sexist and ignorant
Anonymous
Also gender-neutral (or anything ‘neutral’) is a phrase used by people in positions of privilege to deny their privilege – I smell a male troll.
I don’t agree with any of her politics but Sec Rice is ridiculously smart and competent – I would shed a tear if she was elected
Anon
You are definitely not gender neutral. “Just because you’re a woman doesn’t mean you can’t be sexist,” +1. You’re sexist.

Pantsuit Nation Exile
So if you are not a fan of Hillary, and you hope she gets impeached, then you only voted for her because she has lady-parts?
Sydney Bristow
Yup. I would. If she was on the ballot and up against someone whose views I disagreed with, I’d absolutely vote for her and would get emotional about finally getting to vote for a woman president.

You must be new here.
Senior Attorney
Yes, I would feel the same about Condi Rice.
And I am teary-eyed about Hillary Clinton because I am a huge admirer of hers. I am staggered by the amount of sexism in the campaign against her…

Yup, I would.
Blonde Lawyer
Yes, but not Sarah Palin.
PrettyPrimadonna
Yup. And not just because she’s black, in case you were wondering that, too. ;-)

Yes. Big admirer of Condi.
Lilly
Yes. I’m a dem, but I would vote for Condi Rice. I don’t agree with a lot of her positions but I would trust that she is coming from a good place even when I disagreed with her. Sarah Palin, on the other hand, nope, nope, nopety nope. I would write in my dog before I’d vote for her. So it’s not just a Vote For The Woman thing.
nutella
Absolutely. Condi is awesome. I don’t agree with all of her ideas, just like I don’t agree with all of HRC’s but she is incredibly accomplished, smart, hard-working, well respected, thoughtful, and motivated. I feel these same qualities about HRC. I did not feel that way about Sarah Palin, which is why I didn’t vote for her ticket.
Tired of people thinking women cannot think for themselves and cannot form good opinions on why they vote the way they do. Tired of it.
MB
I’ll be honest, I don’t get the teary eyed stuff. I can’t get that emotional about stuff like this. Of course, I can’t say I get teary eyed about much in life period and voting certainly doesn’t get my cold black heart warmed up.

Oh, Yes. Definitely.
Honestly, I never thought the first woman president would be a Democrat. I believed the first woman presidential candidate would HAVE to be a Republican.
It feels good to be wrong though!

I want to learn more about the suffragette movement. Any recommendations for books or podcasts?

Yep, would feel the same for Condi Rice–there are common sense female candidates in both parties.
