Reader Mail – Makeup Tips for the Summer

Because the usual author is on her honeymoon, today’s reader mail has graciously been answered by City Girl, who writes about a variety of topics pertaining to city living as a professional woman, including beauty and fashion for the workplace. City Girl is also an associate at a law firm in Washington, D.C.

I am wondering if you can do a post on what kind of make-up is appropriate for the office. Do you have to wear make-up at all? If so what should you wear? Are there particular brands you recommend? Any advice on this would be very helpful.

Office-appropriate makeup goes a long way towards adding polish to your image as a professional woman. It is not mandatory, nor need it be complicated or time-consuming, but it really adds to looking put-together – plus who doesn’t have a bad complexion day where you want to reach for concealer? I am personally of the school that if you wear makeup to feel put together when you interview, then you should wear makeup as a summer associate, because it will help you feel confident and put-together all summer. Either way, even if you don’t plan to wear much (or any) makeup, do consider some of the products below. If you had to pick just three products, I would recommend tinted moisturizer, mascara or eyeliner and some sort of lip a product. [Read more…]

Giveaway: Tell Us Specifics About Regional Fashion, and You Could Win a Love Quotes Scarf

The contest to win a Love Quotes scarf has ended, but you can still help Corporette nail down the differences in regional dress! (If you’re curious about the details of the contest, please click here.)

So: Here are the questions. We can’t wait to start reading the responses…

  1. What city do you work in?
  2. Where are you in your career — beginner, mid-level, senior?
  3. How conservative is your office, scale of 1-10? Let’s say it’s a 10 if the men wear suits every day, and 1 if the men can wear jeans if they want to.
  4. What is a typical interview outfit for your region? (Color? Skirt suit? Shoes?)
  5. What is a “casual day” outfit (weekday) for your region? (Are jeans allowed?)
  6. What established “rules” that we’ve mentioned — covered arms, covered toes, etc — don’t ring true to your region? (I.e. — I’m from Ohio and we all wear peep toes to work!)
  7. What’s the biggest gaffe you’ve noticed repeatedly in your career?
  8. (Optional) — What other comments do you have about your region do you care to mention?

OK! Hopefully we’ve kept the quiz short enough that we’ll get responses… We really appreciate this, you guys.

Endless.com seems to be having a great sale on tote bags and briefcases, bringing many to the $200-$500 price range.  This black leather tote bag — with straps long enough to carry the bag on your shoulder, but short enough to carry in the crook of your elbow — strikes us at a great basic work bag if you’re hunting for a black tote.  Was $650, now $357.50 at Endless.com.  (Be sure to check out the great sales on Matt & Nat briefcases, also.)    Treesje Monroe Tote

First, researchers discover that not only are careers in finance or consulting bad for work/life balance, but they in fact are far worse than careers in law or medicine. Secondly, researchers found that the reported happiness level for women has dropped since the dawn of the feminist era. Perhaps ignorance was bliss?

Old Navy’s Open-Front CardigansPricewise, it’s hard to go wrong with this feminine cardigan: it’s practically meant to be that sweater you keep in your office in case the A/C is too cold. The sweater comes in a ton of basic colors — some marked as low as $8, others full price at $19 — and we love the soft Pima and Modal blend, as well as the soft draped shoulders.
