The Hunt: Basic Black Pumps

2016 Update: Check out our most recent discussion and roundup of comfortable black pumps!

Sure, we all know what basics professional women are supposed to have in their closets, but if you’re buying one for the first time or replacing one you’ve worn into the ground, it can be a pain to find exactly the right incarnation in stores. In “The Hunt,” we search the stores for a basic item that every woman should have. Psst: check out our frequently updated Guide to Comfortable Heels!

In today’s hunt, we search for reasonably-heeled black leather pumps — nothing higher than 3″…

black pumps for work 1Corso Como makes extremely comfortable shoes — their insoles are lined with gel.  Available at Endless for $154.95. Corso Como Women’s Cate Pump
black pumps for work2These black leather shoes also have a 5-star comfort rating on Zappos — and are at a slightly lower price point of $89. Calvin Klein – Dolly (Black)
black pumps for work under $100These are exactly 3″, but we’ll make an exception because they come in so many colors and get great ratings for comfort.  (Hmmn, perhaps we need a pair of peacock blue pumps.)  Available at Zappos for $83. Kenneth Cole Reaction – Inner Space (Black Leather)
black pumps for the officeWe just couldn’t do a round-up of basic black pumps without including one of our favorite brands, Cole Haan.  These Air Pumps are made with Nike Air technology — we won’t be playing basketball in our pumps any time soon, but it’s good to know someone’s making the shoes as if we were.  Available at Zappos on sale for $243.  (2″ heel; also available in 3″ heel.) Cole Haan – Fiona Low Air Pump (Black Calf)
black pumps pradaIf you’re upgrading and want something in a slightly higher price range, these Prada leather pumps (2.5″ heel) are only $360 at Saks. Prada Linea Rossa
black pumps for office louboutinWe’ve always envied the women who can rock the 4″ heels on the red carpet — and we’ve somehow developed a taste for the lipstick red of the Louboutin pumps.  Unfortunately, their towering heels make them next to impossible for us to use to navigate at the office.  Fortunately, there are more sensible pumps if you’re like us — these are far sturdier and more walkable, with a 2.75″ heel.  Available at Saks for $595. Bargain Friday’s TPS Report – Laura Clement Leather Round-Toe Heels

Our daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices. We begin the week in splurge mode, with our most expensive suggestions, and wind our way to Friday, where a less expensive item of clothing might be just what you need to make it to the weekend.

La Redoute is having an amazing sale right now, and these classic leather heels are the icing on the cake, in our eyes. Originally marked at $75, they’re now $12.99 — and they have a ton of sizes left, too. We love the “petite perforations” on the rounded toe. LAURA CLÉMENT Leather Round-toe Heels

Poll Results: There are some surprises in your every day makeup bag!

Last week we asked you guys what was in your makeup bag for daily office wear.   There were a few surprises…  We’d also love to get some comments from you guys on what your favorite products are — comment away!

  • Only 49% of you wear blush on a daily basis. For some reason we NEVER go out of the house without blush on — so for this we’re surprised.  (We kinda look like the walking dead without it.)  Our favorite product is Benefit’s benetint blush — we heard about it for years but for some reason never purchased.  It’s great, we don’t know what took us so long!)
  • A full 25% of you wear foundation every day. (Again, this surprises us — the most we can muster on most days is tinted moisturizer, but hey.)  Another 41% of you wear pressed powder every day, and another 23% of you wear mineral powder every day.
  • 61% of you favor nude lip colors (versus the 33% who voted for colored lips).  Any favorite shades?
  • 40% of you wear pencil liner, versus the 7% who wear liquid liner
  • Only 38% of you wear under eye concealer!  Really? Again, we look like the walking dead without it — we’re a fan of Neutrogena 3-in-1 Concealer for Eyes, Fair 05
  • Perhaps not surprisingly, 64% of you wear mascara on a daily basis. (Our all-time favorite is L’Oreal Voluminous Full Definition Volume Building Mascara, Blackest Black— and yes, we’ve tried LashBlash and DiorShow.  What’s yours?)

Poll: Are cropped legs ever appropriate for the office?

Crops, floodies, capris, bermuda shorts — we’ve seen a LOT of variations on the “summer suit.”  As the season winds to a close, we’re curious — are cropped legs ever appropriate for the office?

For our $.02…. We’ve seen a lot of people wearing cropped pants at the office — but really only one has pulled them off, and we’re 90% sure it had more to do with her stature (VERY successful person) and less to do with the great suit with cropped legs.  Personally, we wouldn’t spend the money on a suit with cropped pants or bermuda shorts as the bottom — we’d rather just wear a skirt suit if it’s an issue of being cool in the summertime, and we’d rather just wear the pants if it’s an issue of comfort or wanting/needing to sit in an unladylike way (e.g., sorting piles of paper on the floor or something).

We’re not saying the cropped pantsuit wouldn’t look great for a family event where you want to look semi-dressed up — a christening, maybe, or baby shower, or afternoon tea at a hotel, or something like that — but for the office, we just don’t see it.

But hey, maybe we’re totally wrong — what’s your opinion?
