f-bomb at work– This is SUCH a great question that we’re going to have to explore this further at some later date: What do you do when the men at the office obviously censor themselves because you’re a “lady”? [Working Girl] (Photo credit: f bomb, originally uploaded to Flickr by macwagen)

– Hmmn: We like black or navy tights with skirt suits, but apparently there’s some disagreement on that. [Bitter Lawyer]

Bargain Friday’s TPS Report: Anthropologie’s Big Island Top

Our daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices. We begin the week in splurge mode, with our most expensive suggestions, and wind our way to Friday, where a less expensive item of clothing might be just what you need to make it to the weekend.

Anthropologie’s Big Island TopSometimes, a splash of color is just what a working wardrobe needs. We like this empire tunic with puffed sleeves from Anthropologie — worn with conservative gray or black trousers, it would be a great addition to a summer wardrobe, especially when paired with an opaque white cardigan. Available at Anthropologie; was $78, now $39. Big Island Top

Thursday’s TPS Report: Brooks Brothers’ Pinstripe Trousers

Our daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices. We begin the week in splurge mode, with our most expensive suggestions, and wind our way to Friday, where a less expensive item of clothing might be just what you need to make it to the weekend.

Brooks Brothers’ Pinstripe TrousersWe really like these super 110s wool trousers from Brooks Brothers — the way they lay, the spacing of the pinstripes, the Bemberg lining — they just strike us as a beautiful, comfortable, and professional pair of trousers that will last for years.  We particularly like the discount — they were $238, now $95 (but with the automatic discount they come down to $80).   Pinstripe Trousers

Idiotproof Your Summer: Further Etiquette and “No Duh” Tips For Your Internship

how-to-be-a-great-internWe’ve had a great time reading the comments on our “what clothes to buy for your summer internship” post on Monday — it brings to mind so, so many memories of summers past where we’d think, HOW in the name of God did X get through high school, let alone college, with this thick a skull?  Especially in this economy, you need more than just the smarts and scores that got you past the admissions office — you need survival skills and street savvy.  And, in case it needs to be said:  No summer should feel entitled to anything. Here are some from our “greatest hits” list — please add more in comments. Pictured: Clowns, originally uploaded to Flickr by Earls37a.

If your company or firm invites you to a closed-door meeting of any kind — deposition, mediation, etc. — please do not check your Blackberry.  Seriously, I’ve sat in depositions with six people, and the partners and the associates and the witness are taking the day’s events seriously — and the summer associate is sitting there checking their Blackberry.  Tell your secretary where you are; you can check your Blackberry when the partner does.  And yo, that game of Brickbreaker can wait. Wednesday’s TPS Report: David Meister Jersey Sheath Dress

Our daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices. We begin the week in splurge mode, with our most expensive suggestions, and wind our way to Friday, where a less expensive item of clothing might be just what you need to make it to the weekend.

David Meister Jersey Sheath DressFor today’s TPS, we like this classic brown sheath dress from David Meister, on sale at Nordstrom.  It’s form-fitting without being overly sexy, can be paired with a white or beige blazer or cardigan, and can go from day to night without problems.  We particularly like the scooped neckline that hits below her collarbone — too high of a neckline can be extraordinarily unflattering.  Was $268, now $134. How to Wear Stockings to Work Without Getting Runs and Rips

how to wear stockings without ripping them2017 Update: We still stand by this advice on how to wear stockings without ripping them — we’ve also updated links below. You may also want to check out our guide for how to wear pantyhose for work!

More reader mail to catch up on… I thought this reader Q was particularly relevant given some of yesterday’s questions in comments about when/how to wear nylons.

First, while you’ve discussed whether or not to wear stockings, I could really use some advice on HOW to wear them once one decides that they’re appropriate. I rip stockings to shreds whenever I wear them, so I would really appreciate tips on finding a durable brand, as well as how to properly care for them.

I would agree with most of the commenters in yesterday’s post that stockings/nylons/pantyhose aren’t necessary for most day-to-day activities. If you’re interviewing? Nylons for you. If you’re going to court or to a big meeting? Ditto.

As for which brand, we got a ton of great suggestions when we ran a poll on whether black hose or nude hose was better for an August interview (the readers overwhelmingly contradicted me, saying nude hose was the way to go for an August interview); check out those pantyhose brand suggestions in comments. 2017 Update: People seem to really love the Donna Karan Nudes line of pantyhose*, available at Nordstrom — you can also check out our latest discussion on the best lingerie for office looks
