For this week’s splurge, we like this grained leather tote from CC Skye. The gold hardware is playful without being annoying or too blingy, and the structure is functional but chic. We also like that it can be worn over your shoulder or on your arm, as pictured. Available at Zappos for $701. CC SKYE – Bardot (Black) – Bags and Luggage

We love this crisp blue quilted nylon tote from Marc Jacobs. Admittedly, every time we find out that a bag that costs so much is made of nylon, we’re reminded of Joan Cusack’s character in Working Girl (“Six thousand dollars? It isn’t even lea-tha!!”) but, let’s face it, in a large tote like this (15 inches x 13 inches x 5 inches), leather would just weigh you down. We particularly love the belt encircling the tote, and the fact that the color will go as well with a navy suit as a beige or white or black suit. Available at eLuxury.com for $995. (It is available in in a beige leather, as well, for $1295.) Marc Jacobs Collection Casey Quilted Nylon Tote

Le sigh — we have made far too many trips to Bergdorfs, and actually said to ourselves, ooo! Nancy Gonzalez for less than $2000! This large clutch (almost the size of a magazine) is hand-crafted crocodile (Colombian, in case you were curious), with a croc-covered frame. It is supple, it is exotic, it is gorgeous. It is also still rather pricy — $1610 at Vivre (formerly $2300). Flat Crocodile Clutch by Nancy Gonzalez

Happy New Year! While the late December sales weren’t that impressive compared to the late November sales, there are still great deals to be found. To wit: this lovely pebble-grained leather Dolce & Gabbana tote, now on sale at eLuxury. We love the tasteful, almost stately look of the bag, especially when paired with the tiny dash of exotic fun from the faux leopard fur. Size-wise, this is a keeper: 12″ by 15.5″ x 5.5″ — enough to fit tons of papers and folders of all sizes. Was $1,795, now $1,079 at eLuxury.com. Dolce & Gabbana Miss Exotic Tote with Leather Detail

It isn’t often that you can find a D&G bag for just a bit more than a Vuitton bag, yet here’s an opportunity: it’s on sale at Bergdorf’s in both black and red coated canvas. Make no mistake — this is still a splurge — but at $1203, it’s a slightly more reasonable splurge than the full price ($1795). Annoyingly, the Bergdorf’s site doesn’t give dimensions, but it seems to be the same bag as this one at eLuxury (not on sale) — assuming that’s correct, it’s a good-sized satchel; big enough for a paperback novel but not a full-sized notepad. Yes, the recession stinks, but you have to love an economy where a perfectly classic Fendi bag — Italian leather, rolled handles with just a hint of insignia, and the classic jacquard lining — is on sale. It’s marked from $1630 to $979 at Barneys. Fendi Twin Leather Tote at Barneys New York
