There is nothing like the look of a crisp blouse tucked into a simple black skirt. Unfortunately, keeping the blouse from shifting during the day can be a bit of a chore.
This tab-front skirt from Asos ($43) has an elastic waistband to keep the skirt in place. I’d wear it with a pair of Spanx (to ensure a body-conscious fit that flatters), a light grey button down, and a black statement necklace. In general I’m not a fan of the super cheap blazer, but they have their place: when you’re losing or gaining weight, when everything you own is dirty, when you’re traveling and without your regular wardrobe… and I’ll admit it, I’ve had my fair share of $20 blazers turn into “the piece I can’t live without.” With those caveats, I like this Mossimo blazer from Target — the textured cotton strikes me as a perfect material for a “separate,” and the blazer itself seems pretty inoffensive and basic. Looooove this sophisticated stretch crepe jacket from Donna Karan. It looks cozy but authoritative at the same time — not to mention flattering. I’d either wear it with all black, or else I’d have fun with colorblocking — perhaps wearing a royal blue pencil skirt and using a colorful belt (purple? green?) instead of the one it comes with. Oooo: Bloomingdale’s has a number of cute things on sale right now, including a ton of great blazers (albeit in limited sizes). This morning I’m loving this classic Kamryn blazer from Lauren by Ralph Lauren. Love the slight puff to the shoulders, the tropical stretch wool, and the single back vent. Love this simple cotton puff-sleeve t-shirt from Brooks Brothers. It’s perfect: the sleeves are just the right length, the scoop neck is flattering but not too low, and it looks fitted but not skintight. Love the thick cotton, as well — I’m not a fan of the super thin tees that a lot of places sell. This one is $49.50 at Brooks Brothers (available in black, white, light blue, and light pink). The Nordstrom Half-Yearly Sale has begun, and a number of new items have markdowns up to 50%. I like this simple dress from BCBGMaxAzria, which won reviewers over for its flattering fit. I like the geometric pleat details on the front, as well as the sleeves, high neckline, and ladylike hemline for the office.
