Suit of the Week

in Fashion, Suits

For busy working women, the suit is often the easiest outfit to throw on in the morning. In general, this feature is not about interview suits, which should be as classic and basic as you get — instead, this feature is about the slightly different suit that is fashionable, yet professional.

We haven’t seen a suit like this in a while, so we thought we’d post. We like the way the outfit goes to extremes — when worn with the jacket, it’s very professional and buttoned-up. But the dress, by itself, is feminine and plays up a woman’s curves with a silk bodice and an interestingly-detailed belt. To us, this is a great “big day” suit — make your argument with the jacket on, and then go straight from the courthouse or boardroom to a dinner date with your significant other to celebrate the success of the presentation. The jacket (Elie Tahari ‘Nadine’ Jacket) is $498, and the dress (Elie Tahari ‘Faith’ Dress) is $448; both are available at Nordstrom’s.

Our daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices. We begin the week in splurge mode, with our most expensive suggestions, and wind our way to Friday, where a less expensive item of clothing might be just what you need to make it to the weekend.

We’ve just discovered Spiegel’s ponté knit collection, and we’re kind of loving it. Take this sheath dress, for example. Available in 3 colors and a huge range of sizes (from 2 to 24W), it also has 15 matching pieces including multiple jackets, skirts, and pants — all priced under $89. Ponté knit, as you may know, is a stretchy, soft fabric — almost a bit like jersey knit but much sturdier. It doesn’t wrinkle (making it perfect for travel) and drapes beautifully — it also has a way of hiding certain, er, flaws. The dress is available at Spiegel’s for $49. We’ve had our eyes on this Thakoon dress for a while now, and the price might be finally right — it’s on deep discount at eLUXURY.  Originally $1,940, the dress is currently marked to $1,165, but eLUXURY is offering an extra 40% off at checkout and free shipping on all orders over $150.  So the dress is now in the ballpark of $699 (plus tax).  Not bad for an elaborately embroidered gauze dress from an up and coming designer.  Thakoon – Belted Djeballah Dress
