For busy working women, the suit is often the easiest outfit to throw on in the morning. In general, this feature is not about interview suits for women, which should be as classic and basic as you get — instead, this feature is about the slightly different suit that is fashionable, yet professional.
Yawn: there are not a lot of interesting suits out there right now! I’m liking the new superfine cotton collection from J.Crew, though, and not just because some of the pieces come in a brilliant “byzantine blue.” The fit looks solid, and I’m intrigued by their description of the cotton, which is “siro spun to give it a hint of stretch, [a treatment] only the best suiting fabrics in Japan get”). In-ter-est-ing. The jacket (1035 jacket in superfine cotton) is $178, the trouser (1035 trouser in superfine cotton) is $118, the skirt (Pencil skirt in superfine cotton) is $98, and the dress (Marielle dress in superfine cotton) is $178 (regulars and petites).

Happy hump day! Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think this Ludlow suit from J.Crew is new — it is apparently a woman’s version of the “legendary Ludlow jacket” that men have bought for years. I like the slightly longer look to the blazer, and the otherwise classic, simple details such as the four-season Italian wool from Loro Piana, Bemberg lining, and various pockets. The jacket (Women’s Ludlow jacket in Italian wool) is $375, and the pants (Women’s Ludlow trouser in Italian wool) are $195 at J.Crew.

For skinny pants that are not TOO skinny for the office, nothing beats the Minnie cut from J Crew. For an easy office look, grab a pair in your favorite color and match with a white button down and fitted sweater. The ankle length is flattering on almost everyone and works whether you prefer kitten pumps or sky high heels. These wool herringbone pants are $128. Minnie pant in wool herringbone

I like to think of the past few years as the J.Crew renaissance. After a few years of ho-hum clothes, they are suddenly turning out styles so perfect that big name designer boutiques are now stocking capsule J.Crew lines. How crazy is that? Jenna Lyons, J.Crew’s President and Executive Creative Director, deserves a retail gold medal.
And, really, we’re all the winners in J.Crew resurgence. The stylish, yet affordable, professional options from J.Crew just keep getting better. One of my absolute favorite pieces from the new Fall collection is the J.Crew No. 2 Pencil Skirt. This skirt is so well thought out that it’s practically impossible to find a single style fault with it. The double-serge wool construction is substantial enough for winter wear and will smooth out little figure flaws without the aid of your trusty Spanx. The length is great for the office and exceptionally flattering. Plus, it comes in 6 of those rich, beautiful colors that J.Crew is known for — from basic black and acorn (a neutral beige) to vibrant flame and spicy gold.
I love the look of a well-made pencil skirt paired with a simple, solid color button down shirt. But, this iconic skirt shape also pairs well with sweaters, shells and blazers for the office. I’m sure many of you already have a go-to black pencil skirt, so why not pick up this skirt in a color to pair with neutral shirts and sweaters this Fall? The No. 2 Pencil Skirt is available for $120.00 at J.Crew. No. 2 pencil skirt in double-serge wool

I often shop at British retailers like Karen Millen and LK Bennett for perfectly tailored dresses; our friends in the UK just have a better grasp on affordable professional attire than we do. But that might be changing.
This dress from J.Crew ($188) has a shape that is ladylike without being matronly. It also has a chic knotted-detail and a sophisticated neckline. I’d wear this vibrant red dress with simple, gold jewelry and flesh-toned pumps.
Looking for something more neutral? The dress also comes in charcoal, black and taupe. Choose the black and add a leopard print belt to incorporate one of Fall’s hottest trends. Or balance the charcoal with a jewel-toned pump for a little color. Index dress in wool crepe

J.Crew recently added this cute shirt dress to the mix, and I really like it — the nipped-in waist, the pleated skirt, even the half-placket. I wish the skirt were a bit longer (according to J.Crew’s customer service, the size 8 has a 19.25″ skirt length) — but still, it’s a lovely dress with a vintage feel. I like it best in the dark navy, but the “heather saddle” (pictured) and “gatsby green” are also nice. It’s $118 at JCrew.com. Ruthie shirtdress
