For this week’s suit of the week, we’re liking this uncomplicated polyester suit from Calvin Klein with some great pleat details on the jacket — it’s interesting but simple at the same time. We also like that the fabric has a bit of spandex in it, to give it just a wee bit of stretch. We like the small, pretty buttons, the bright pop of color, and the plain edge at the bottom. (In our experience, ruffles never look good at the bottom of a sweater.) We’re liking the drapy cardigans of the season, but some of the very lightweight ones can look a little too unstructured for the office. That’s why we like this textured cardigan from Jones New York. The camel hair color is sophisticated (we’d wear it with browns or blacks), and perhaps a basic white tee if we didn’t want to wear the matching cowl-neck shell. It actually seems like a dress that would look great with a contrasting long-sleeved turtleneck beneath it, as well as on its own. We like it too — the basic gray color, the fit of the jacket and the length of the skirt are all the marks of a winning suit. This cotton boyfriend cardigan actually comes in white and yellow — gray is no longer available — but we love it all the more because it’s that much more appropriate for spring. Spring is also known as “cardigan time” to the office-going woman, so now’s the time to start stocking up on your basics as well as fresher shapes if you haven’t already. We’d wear this cardigan open, over a shift dress, with the sleeves pushed up and some long necklaces, or perhaps buttoned-up over a pencil skirt with a collared blouse beneath it. It is another week without a really standout suit — perhaps the economy is driving everyone towards more basic suits? In any event, we like this pinstriped pant suit from Jones New York, available at Macy’s. In particular, we like the chalk stripes, and the three pockets and buttons. It comes with a knit shell, which we would jettison immediately, wearing the suit with something more luxurious, such as silk or cashmere. Available at Macy’s for $320 (for both pieces). You cannot go wrong with basic black, and this is nearly a perfect summer dress for an office cocktail party. The short sleeves give you coverage, while the wide v-neck adds some (ladylike) intrigue — and the on-seam pockets give you a place to stick your coatcheck stub or building pass.
