For busy working women, the suit is often the easiest outfit to throw on in the morning. In general, this feature is not about interview suits for women, which should be as classic and basic as you get — instead, this feature is about the slightly different suit that is fashionable, yet professional.
I love this suit from Nanette Lepore. Let’s start with the jacket: love the pleated peplum flounce in the back, as well as the pockets. Love the gathered shoulders, the slightly wide v-neck, the buttons… it’s a classy, modern look. The wrap skirt looks great, except I’m a bit worried about that slit — flashing the midthigh is never appropriate for the office. If, after trying it on, it were really horrible, I would either return the skirt (but keep that gorgeous jacket), or possibly have a tailor add some fabric to “fill” the slit — perhaps a lace, or even just a matching white silk. The jacket (Nanette Lepore Button Collared Working Jacket) is $428, and the skirt (Nanette Lepore Wrap Playing Skirt) is $248 at Bloomingdale’s.

We’re not normally a fan of the short-sleeved jacket, but we like here with this Nanette Lepore suit. The jacket is shapely, with puffed sleeves and a nipped in waist, and the vertical lines on the skirt are slimming. We like the unusual color, also — it would make a great late-summer, early-fall suit. (If it ever gets cold again, we’d wear it with a tissue-thin long-sleeved tee beneath the jacket, either scoopnecked or turtlenecked.) Both pieces are part of the Nordstrom anniversary sale going on right now — the jacket (Nanette Lepore ‘Spy On Me’ Cap-Sleeve Jacket
) was $428, but is currently marked $284.90; the skirt (Nanette Lepore ‘Top Secret’ Pencil Skirt
) was $278, but is currently marked to $185.90.

Reader P writes in to recommend this silk top from Nanette Lepore, which, she notes, “works in so many ways and perfect on an hour-glass figure.” We like it also (particularly the combo of silk and stud detailing), but the obvious point here is to know your office — in a more conservative office this would work best under a buttoned-up suit, with very traditional pumps — remove the jacket to take it from desk to dinner. Otherwise, we’d wear it with a pencil skirt, or perhaps a high-waisted skirt. It’s on sale at Saks, marked from $248 to $185. Whip It Silk Top

We love this elegant, summery take on tweed from Nanette Leport. We love the deep V, the ruffle at the back, and the cuffed sleeves — and we love that color. It’s $498 at Nordstrom, available in sizes 0-12. Nanette Lepore ‘Mermaid Tweed’ Jacket

Wow — beautiful jacket from Nanette Lepore. The bright, happy color (which still strikes us as autumnal) is gorgeous, and the ruffles, poufed shoulders, and tulip hem are slight enough that the jacket doesn’t scream “TRENDY!”. We’d wear it with grays and navys — trousers, sheath dresses, even A-line skirts. It is a bit of a splurge, though: $448 at Nordstrom’s, in sizes 2-12. Nanette Lepore ‘If You Leave’ Jacket
