The below content is about the 2016 Nordstrom Anniversary Sale.

WOW I’m liking the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale this year — there are SO.MANY.CUTE.DRESSES, many of them with sleeves, and a ton under $100.  I’m going to round up my Nordstrom Anniversary Sale picks below, but first I’ll shout out some general workwear trends I’m seeing in the NAS sale — I also have a tip for you cardholders if you’re having problems choosing Triple Points on checkout.

Workwear Trends Observed in the NAS Sale

Pictured at top, a few quick workwear trends I observed in the NAS sale: first, evergreen/forest green is BIG for fall.  Second, mock necks and turtlenecks — particularly the sleeveless variety — are also a strong look.  Finally, as you can see in the middle navy dress, there’s also a pretty strong continuation of the trend to combine black and navy together; you can also see it here and here.

A Tip for Nordstrom Cardholders Having Problems with Triple Points

A great way to really take advantage of the sale is to choose today as your “triple points day” (if you still have one left for the year).  I’ve already placed one order today, and was having problems at checking choosing the Triple Points option — just as I did during their “personal 10 point day.” I called the number at the top of the screen (there’s also an online chat option) and the customer service rep confirmed that several people were having problems with it because they have a new system of some sort — so she applied it over the phone and then told me to go ahead and check out — she said that was the best option for the moment.  It was only a 3 minute wait or so, so I’m glad I called. Here’s a link to their customer service page if you’re having problems.

Nordstrom Anniversary Sale Picks for Workwear

Without further ado, these are some of my top picks for work clothes from the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. Note that within each grouping, the sale picks go in the order of least money to most money. ALSO, where available I’ve tried to note if petite, cusp (14-18), or plus sizes are available, or other points of note (like great reviews or other colors offered). For our full collection of plus size picks from the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, please consider signing up for our CorporettePlus newsletter, or visiting our Plus-Size Workwear page.

The below content is about the 2016 Nordstrom Anniversary Sale.

Our daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices.

work clothes in nordstrom saleThis dress has been around for a few years, and I think I’ve posted it at least twice in different iterations over the years — honestly I have to stop myself from posting it more often because every time I see it I think, man, what a great dress. Sleeves, a work-appropriate hem, a flattering jewel neck, and interesting waist details — sign me up! It’s available in black, navy, and a surprisingly fetching mustard yellow, sizes 2-16, regular and petite sizes. Right now it’s $64 (!), down from $108. Ellen Tracy Pleat Ponte Sheath Dress

Psst: The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale starts this morning for cardholders! We’ll have a roundup of our favorite work clothes soon, but in the meantime, here’s a quick primer on the sale: Nordstrom holds this sale once a year where they mark down NEW clothes (fall and winter clothes) early, before the season starts. Prices go back up after a certain time. Right now you need to be a Nordstrom cardholder to enter the sale; if you don’t already hold one you can sign up here. I did a quick swing through the beauty department this morning and will note that there are a lot of major discounts on beauty “appliances,” if you’re into that. Several products from Clarisonic, FOREO, and some great sets including several Diptyque candles for barely more than you pay for one. A few quick things jumping out to me from the sale section also: TONS of Zella, one of readers’ favorite legging brands, as well as tons of nice plus-size picks from Vince Camuto and Eileen Fisher, both of which are “featured brands.” Those tend to sell out first, so here are four of my favorite picks from Vince Camuto right now, all currently marked $46-$105:

nordstom anniversary sale picks for work clothes

  • white blouse (available in petites and several other colors) now marked to $46, will be $69 after the sale
  • black flare skirt, regular and petites, now marked to $58, will be $89 after the sale
  • red dress (plus sizes and petites also, also several other colors), now marked to $72, will be $109 after the sale
  • blazer (LOVE this one — plus sizes also), now marked to $105, will be $159 after the sale

The below content is about the 2015 Nordstrom Anniversary Sale.

As mentioned earlier: The Nordstrom Anniversary sale, where they mark next season’s merchandise down now for a limited time, just opened to the general non-cardholding public today.  After reviewing my picks from last week’s early access sale, the good news is that many of my favorites are still in stock in lots of sizes. Some of the pieces that sold out aren’t surprising (there’s a much more limited stock of Pliage bags on sale than there was last week, for example), and some were (who knew Coach flats were so popular? Just the gold left now). So for today’s roundup I thought I’d focus on the “online only” portion of the sale, as well as beauty (which I totally didn’t hit at all last week and oh, it is good).  Remember, my full workwear picks are here, and my full picks from the bag and shoe section are here. (Just for kicks I’ve also put clickable images at the bottom of this post — see the original posts for all of the text/thoughts/reasoning behind each piece, should you care to.)

First, two picks from the online-only section that I’m not picturing:  this Gallery coat looks like a great classic if you need a new one, and these Cosabella thongs are on a pretty great discount if that’s your thing… and, hey, while we’re talking undies, do note that there’s a ton of Hanky Panky in the sale in general. On to my four new work dress picks, all under $150:

  • I mentioned this Tahari dress last week but didn’t picture it — I still think it looks lovely.  It’s currently marked to $118.90, but will go back up to $178 after the sale ends August 3. (I didn’t notice this gray printed Tahari dress either last week and it looks great as well.)
  • This nice Ellen Tracy dress comes in both fuchsia and black, and is machine washable — it’s now $84.90, but will be $128 after the sale ends.  Available in sizes 2-16.
  • This faux wrap Eliza J dress has been around for years I think, but I haven’t seen it with sleeves before — it looks short(ish) in some of the pictures, but longer in others; my guess is that if you’re shorter than a model it’ll be fine on you.  It’s $78.90, but will go back up to $118 after the sale.  It’s selling out in some sizes and colors (it’s available in purple, cobalt, and black, sizes 2-16), but I think there’s still something for everyone.
  • This Karen Kane dress has been around for years — every season they come out with new colors and prints, usually in both short- and long-sleeved versions.  On deep discount you can sometimes find lucky sizes as low as $40ish, so to have your pick of sizes and colors at $71 that’s pretty good.   It’s available in regular sizes XS-XL, in six different colors and prints as part of the sale (and more outside of the sale, including plus sizes).

2017 Update: Gearing up for the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale 2017? Early access starts July 13 — sign up for our newsletter to get our picks for workwear and beyond!

The below content is about the 2015 Nordstrom Anniversary Sale.

As I may have mentioned, the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is on right now, where they mark pieces from next season’s collections down for a limited time; after the sale ends prices go back up to normal until the end of the season.  Right now it’s “early access” for card holders (and everyone gets double points, yay); the sale will open to the public on July 17.  I did a roundup of some of my favorite picks for workwear yesterday — here are some of my favorite picks for shoes and bags from the sale.  As noted yesterday, there are a ton of great boots for the weekend (even though it looks like the rag & bone booties sold out!) — a few I’m rounding up (pictures on Instagram) are from Børn, Ivanka Trump, Paul Green (which I always think of as a comfort brand, but these are adorable), and Aquatalia, which again I always think of as a comfort brand, but these have just the right rugged look that we’re seeing everywhere with skinny jeans.

  • The Rockstud fascination may be ending, but I still love a good strappy flat, and these affordable, well-reviewed Halogen flats come in a zillion colors.  They’re $59.90, available in sizes 4-12, medium and wide.
  • These Bianca flats from Coach come in three colors and seem really well priced — they’re $99, but will go back up to $175 after the sale.
  • Sam Edelman heels have gotten huge in recent seasons (everyone loves the Okala, which sadly is not part of the sale) — these leopard d’orsay pumps would be great as an unexpected neutral, particularly with bare legs in the fall.  (Know your office though, obviously!) They’re $89.90.
  • D’orsay flats are huge right now, particularly with the drapey pants that are everywhere.  These Charles David shoes come in three colors, and look nice for $109.90.

Nordstrom Anniversary Sale: Early Access

2017 Update: Gearing up for the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale 2017? Early access starts July 13 — sign up for our newsletter to get our picks for workwear and beyond!

The below content is about the 2015 Nordstrom Anniversary Sale.

As noted earlier today, the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is on, with early access to card holders. Every year they do it a bit differently — this year you can see the items without a card, but can only place them in your cart once you confirm your card number. Today through the 16th you can earn double points; you can also choose for today to be your triple points day if you really plan to do a lot of buying.

General notes:

  • I’ll do a separate roundup of shoes and bags later, but right now note that there are some great picks for reader favorite AGL (flats are now down to $210!), as well as Cole Haan and Tory Burch. For the weekend, there are great sales on Frye, as well as these cute rag & bone booties (now marked to $350! ooh, and here’s a more affordable version from Ivanka Trump).
  • For bags — nice selection of Rebecca Minkoff, Longchamp (Pliage on sale!), Marc by Marc Jacobs, and Brahmin.
  • If you need a new winter or fall coat, do check out the selection — I’m in love with these two DvF coats, as well as this bright blue Ted Baker coat (also available in black), and this Calvin Klein is an affordable take on the trend of boyfriend coats. For the weekend it looks like draped leather jackets are hot, and there are a ton in the sale in a wide range of prices — this affordable Trouvé leather jacket is my favorite. If you’re looking for an investment coat, this double breasted, below the knee, cashmere and wool coat from Nordstrom Signature and Caroline Issa is a classic.
  • Great denim choices, including flares, skinnies, boyfriend styles from trendy names like Le Frame, Current/Elliott, rag & bone, and Paige, as well as Kut from the Kloth, NYDJ, Wit & Wisdom, Vigoss, and SEVEN different styles of reader favorite Jag pull-on jeans.
  • Great shapewear, including Yummie, Spanx, and TC — and, ooh, the readers’ favorite pantyhose brand, Donna Karan’s The Nudes, is part of the sale.
  • Tons of reader favorite Zella leggings and workout gear on sale.

Now for some specific picks for workwear…

Deal Alert: Nordstrom Anniversary Sale

NAS Workwear

2017 Update: Gearing up for the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale 2017? Early access starts July 13 — sign up for our newsletter to get our picks for workwear and beyond!

The below content is about the 2014 Nordstrom Anniversary Sale.

As mentioned earlier: hooray, the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is now open to the general public!  I did a round-up a week or so ago when it opened for Rewards card members, but thought I’d revisit.  (A lot of my original picks in terms of specific items are still available — at the very bottom of this post you can see which ones are no longer available.  Some, like that gorgeous orange peplum blazer, are only available in limited colors.)  For today I also thought I’d revisit my original roundup of brands — some I’m taking off the list because they’ve sold out, or what’s left in the sale isn’t great for work. (That said, for some of the brands, I swear there’s MORE inventory than there was last week — so they may be adding pieces.)

Bags: I’m seeing good representation from Brahmin, Kate Spade, Longchamp (including numerous colors for the expandable Pliage tote), Marc by Marc Jacobs, Michael Kors (including the reader favorite, the Jet Set line of totes), Rebecca Minkoff (including a ton of basic black bags and reader favorite M.A.B. tote), Tory Burch and Vince Camuto

Shoes: There’s a ton of great choices from Stuart Weitzman (but not as many as last week!).  There is also a good selection from a number of brands in our Guide to Comfortable Heels, including Attilio Giusti Leombruni, Børn, Cole Haan, Enzo Angiolini, and Ivanka Trump (but not as many as last week). and Tory Burch.

General Clothes Notes: Lots of choices from Burberry, Classiques Entier, Diane von Furstenberg, Eliza J, Halogen (including reader favorite, The Skirt), Joie, Karen Kane, and St John, Tahari, Theory, Vince, and Vince Camuto.

Lingerie: There’s a good selection from Chantelle, Commando, Hanky Panky, Natori, reader favorite Shimera camisoles, Spanx, Wacoal, and Yummie by Heather Thomson. There are also some online-only deals like a 6-pack of Cosabella thongs for $80 (normally $120).

Denim: There’s a good selection from 7 for All Mankind, Hudson Jeans, J Brand, Jag Jeans (including reader comfy favorite, the pull-on jeans), KUT from the Kloth, NYDJ, and Paige Denim.

Anyway — here are a few new workwear picks from the NAS. If you hover over the picture you’ll get details like brand, price, etc. They’re in order of least expensive to most expensive in each category. (Can you guess which is the most expensive and the least expensive just by looking at the pictures?). [Read more…]
