Reader M suggests this lovely dress from, as she says, an “unexpected source” — QVC. She writes: “I love this dress so much, I bought it twice–once in black, and again in charcoal–something I never do. It’s easily dressed up or down by adding a scarf, brooch, pearls, a cardigan, belt, or jacket.” We agree–between the flattering neckline and the ladylike length, it’s a great basic for work. It’s available for $40, in sizes XS-3X, at QVC.com. Dialogue Elbow Sleeve Ballet Neck Ponte Knit Dress

We’re loving this ’60s-inspired dress. The high collar, the three-quarter-length sleeves, the A-line skirt, and the flattering seaming — it’s a great dress for the office. Green can be a tough color to wear, though — we’d probably try to warm it up a bit with a gold brooch and earrings, and dark brown pumps. It’s $144 at Nordstrom.com (available in sizes 2-16). Ann Taylor is having a great sale for Mother’s Day — 25% off all items (through 5/10). Which means that lovely, basic dresses like this one go from being marked down to being a serious steal. This one is your basic wrap, with some not-too-frilly ruffles around the neckline. We like the wideness of the belt (it’ll probably smooth out any imperfections) and the inset waistband at the back. Was $129, marked to $59; use code MOTHERSDAY to bring it down to $44. Ruffle Ponte Wrap Dress
