We’re loving this purple belt from Melamed today.  We particularly like the deep, eggplant color.  We might try it worn over a heather gray cardigan, perhaps with a navy pencil skirt.  Available in sizes S and M at Bluefly.com for $87 (was $175).  Melamed purple patent leather ‘Demi’ belt

AK Anne Klein Women's Christa Basic PumpReader J wrote in to sing the praises of these wine-colored pumps from AK Anne Klein:

They’re quite comfortable, the heel isn’t too high, and the cut out on the inside of the shoe gives it a little visual interest. And I love the wine color – not quite a neutral and not so bright that it couldn’t be worn with a wide variety of outfits The price point certainly doesn’t hurt either!

Oooh, we like. They’re on sale at Endless for $37 to $68 (the wine ones are $54), in sizes 6-10. AK Anne Klein Women’s Christa Basic Pump

We’re liking the looks of this purple jersey dress from Maggy London.  We like the ruching at the waist, the 3/4-length sleeves, and the black “buckle” at the waist.  We’d wear it with a simple black camisole and some pearls.  Was $108, now $43 at Nordstrom.   Maggy London Print Jersey Dress

Cole Haan - Carma OT Air Pump (Plumeria Snake Embossed) - FootwearYou know, it has been far too long since we expressed our love for purple shoes.  (Unless we’re crazy and we did it last week, in which case, our apologies.)  They go with navy and black, they add a dose of funk (in a conservative way), and, in general, they’re great.  We had not seen the “plumeria” color in Cole Haan before — but we must say, we’re loving it. They’re $278 at Zappos.  Cole Haan – Carma OT Air Pump (Plumeria Snake Embossed) – Footwear

(Note to readers — gauge your office culture before wearing open-toed shoes like this; they are inappropriate in the more conservative spaces.)

iconiconWe like this merino wool top by Antonio Melani.  We love the detail around the neckline (which looks more sophisticated to us than a simple ruffle, but hey) and the vibrancy of the violet — and we generally like a ribbed high waist.  We’re also intrigued that in half of the pictures they show the model with the sweater tucked into skirts, so the ribbing all but disappears, which seems to be a great way to get more mileage out of the top.  Was $89, now down to $18 (in violet only). Weekend Open Thread

At long last, it’s here: the weekend! Something on your mind? Chat about it here.

Our casual recommendation for this weekend: we lurve this shirt from Splendid almost as much as we love the price. While the untucked shirt look can sometimes work for the office, this particular look — with the mixture of jersey and woven fabric — seems made for the weekend with jeans. Was $85, now $33.90 at Nordstrom (sizes S and L only). Splendid Woven Front Knit Pullover Shirt

Suit of the Week

by C on 12/09/2009 · 23 comments

in Fashion, Suits

For busy working women, the suit is often the easiest outfit to throw on in the morning. In general, this feature is not about interview suits, which should be as classic and basic as you get — instead, this feature is about the slightly different suit that is fashionable, yet professional.

We’re normally a bit iffy about colored suits, but we do seem to have a thing for purple ones.  (Actually, we just realized how much of a thing we have for purple suits — we promise, this’ll be the last one of ‘09.)  Today we like this deep, deep eggplant suit from Anne Klein — we like the interesting collar details, the double buttons in the front, and the tailoring of the jacket.  We also like the sale:  the suit (Anne Klein Suit 2-Piece Skirted Suit) is on sale at Dillards for $107 (marked down from $179), available in sizes 2-14.

OK — We genuinely love this cardigan from Nordstrom’s in-house line, Classiques Entier.  We love the wide, open weave on the front, and the thin ribbing on the sides; we also love that it will look just as great with jeans as it will with trousers.  We’d accessorize with a long pendant necklace (perhaps one of Tiffany’s key necklaces), or perhaps a series of 2 or 3 layered necklaces — or even just simple pearls.  It’s $168 at Nordstrom, in black and purple, in sizes XS to XL.  Classiques Entier ‘Mouline’ Cardigan

Incidentally: this purse (nearly 40% off) isn’t for everyone, but fans of art deco (and the L.A.M.B. line) might like…

We’re liking this lovely purple crepe suit from Neiman Marcus.  The rougher wool looks lovely against the lighter fabric on the neckline, and we like the empire waist on the dress. Call us crazy, but while we like both pieces together (very sophisticated), we also like them apart — we’d wear the shift dress with perhaps a winter white or khaki blazer, and the jacket with perhaps a white, long-sleeved, hip-length top and navy trousers.  The jacket and skirt together (Tahari – Crepe Jacket & Dress) are $580 at Neiman Marcus.
