Loving this fabulous purple sheath dress from Elie Tahari. The ladylike knee length, the high neckline, the high armhole — it all seems like a nice twist on the classic black or navy sheath dress. It’s $298 at Bloomingdale’s. Elie Tahari Follie Sleeveless Double Knit Sheath Dress

A great trouser doesn’t need much by way of exposition, but: hello, these look great, and Nordstrom has them in 7 colors, which says a lot about their confidence level. I like the aubergine (pictured), as an interesting not-quite-neutral color. I’d wear it with shades of gray or blue, or I might try colorblocking with a dark red sweater on top. They’re $198 at Nordstrom (sizes 0 to 18). Lafayette 148 New York ‘Menswear’ Full Leg Trousers

I really like the cap-toed look to these flats from Geox. The lilac/prune pair (pictured here — love that bit of red where the cap toe meets the rest of the shoe) would be a lovely unexpected pop of color to a pair of black pants, gray pants, and definitely navy pants. They range from $110.50 to $130. Geox – D Lola 25 (Lilac/Prune) – Footwear

For workwear that is smart and fashionable, and that you won’t see on every other working woman on your commuter train, it’s hard to beat the UK’s Warehouse. Known in the UK as a “high street” brand, this label is akin to more well known inexpensive stores like Zara or Uniqlo. Frequent visitors to the UK are likely very familiar with shopping the popular Warehouse stores — there are 10 in London alone! But, it is a little known fact that Warehouse.co.uk will ship to the States for a $10.00 flat rate. That’s less expensive that a lot of US-based online retailers.
One of my favorite current Warehouse finds is this deep purple a-line skirt. The shape and length are 100% classic, which means this skirt is right on trend with this Fall’s ladylike looks. I like the idea of this skirt with a belted cardigan and round-toe pumps for a ’40s-inspired office look. You could totally change up the vibe by pairing it with a button-down shirt and blazer, or even a cashmere turtleneck. But, a word to the wise about this smart find — it comes in UK sizes, which can be tricky. Be sure to convert your size before ordering, and be aware that, unlike mainstream US brands, UK brands don’t engage in vanity sizing. This a-line skirt is available for $80.00 at Warehouse. By the time you reach vice-president, or partner, you have some wardrobe leeway. If, that is, you’ve loosened the stricture of corporate dress code gradually over the years. You can wear color beyond navy and pattern beyond foulard.
I am a happy new owner of this Tory Burch silk jersey frock and can confirm that with a navy jacket or cardigan, and a pair of navy ballet flats, it will work for non-courtroom, non-big-scary-mean-client-days in almost any office. The colors are deeper than the web images would suggest. The silk jersey is quite heavy and luxurious, but wouldn’t suffer from a little bit of shapewear underneath. Runs true to size. The dress is $425 at Tory Burch. Audra Dress
