For busy working women, the suit is often the easiest outfit to throw on in the morning. In general, this feature is not about interview suits, which should be as classic and basic as you get — instead, this feature is about the slightly different suit that is fashionable, yet professional.
Lots of new suits are hitting the stores this week, apparently. We really like this chic navy blue suit — we like the loose collar, the high waist of the skirt, and the texture of the shantung. We do wish, however, that the skirt were longer than 20.5 inches (but hey, we’re sure the teenagers buying DvF suits will look great in it!). If you’re 5′4 or below, though, we’d give it a try anyway. The set is available at Saks for pre-order — the jacket (Jonesie Shantung Jersey Jacket) is $345, and the skirt (Chi-Chi High-Waisted Skirt) is $185. (Incidentally — Saks is having tons of sales, with new products having hit the racks yesterday.)

We’re liking this fitted navy blazer from Nanette Lepore. We like the satin detailing (particularly on the back), and we’re intrigued by the banding at the bottom. We’d wear it with a gray pencil skirt and, on a more casual day, colorful pumps in royal blue or purple. It’s $398 at Saks, available in sizes XS-L. Spice Island Jacket

We’re loving the look of this classic-with-a-twist: a belted trenchcoat from Burberry. The trench itself is as classic as it gets: double-breasted, self-tie belt, slash pockets, epaulets, even gun flaps, for heaven’s sake. The pattern, though, is so interesting — a black floral pattern crawling across a black and white checkered pattern, almost as if it were a shadow on a wall. We love that they kept it black and white, also. It is (gulp) $1495 at Saks, available in sizes 2 through 12. Floral-Check Trenchcoat

We’re loving this fabulous sculpted jacket and flattering skirt from Dior. It’s oh so elegant, bu still professional and serious, and those pockets are seriously fun and flattering (look how tiny her waist looks!) We also love the little details, like the silk lining. The jacket (Sculpted Fringe Jacket
) is $2,750, and the skirt (Front-Slit Skirt
) is $890.

Today’s reader mail has to do with someone who is in need of advice for what to wear to a gala event…
Dear Corporette – You have never steered me wrong, and I definitely need advice on this one: I have been invited by a former boss & mentor (partner of a French law firm) to a gala dinner in DC, where he is to receive an award. What is appropriate dress? I have several gala-type dresses, things I wear to the opera or to very elegant weddings…but I am not sure how conservative to be at such a gathering of professionals.
Thank you for the compliment! We’re happy to give our $.02, but really, we hope our DC-based readers can help her out. We’ve only been to gala events in New York, at which people have worn anything from black business suits (and looked boring but professional) to actual floor-length dresses. Our rule of thumb would be that if the men are supposed to wear a tuxedo, then you should be in a floor-length dress (or the pants version of a floor-length dress). Avoid tons of sparkles and surprising flashes of flesh — it’s one thing to bare your arms and unintentionally show a little cleavage, it’s another thing to pull a Hilary Swank (pictured at right) and wear a dress that’s too low cut in the back. We would advise you to wear either a wrap, a jacket, or a shrug, just so you have some way to modify your look as the night goes on. For our money (or as inspiration), we’d suggest something like the dress pictured above — the high neckline and classic cut makes it a sure hit. Labor Day sales have begun, including great discounts at Saks and Nordstrom’s. We like this Nanette Lepore silk top which would, we think, look elegant and graceful even if you wanted to put a camisole beneath it. We’d wear it with flowy trousers and stilettos and a nice big pendant necklace. Now $86.90 at Saks.com (was $145). Silk Sun Disk Top

Lord, this suit is lovely. And oh so pricey! But back to the lovely aspects of it — we’re intrigued by the ring and tie closure, which we have not seen on many suits before, and as always we love the princess seams and the jersey fabric. The pattern is both new to us but a little old, as well — it simultaneously reminds us of Mad Men and Sherlock Holmes. Armani Collezioni – Houndstooth Jersey Suit, available at Saks.com for (wait for it) $1,995 for the jacket and $615 for the skirt.

Today we’re loving this slightly feminine take on the briefcase from Marc Jacobs. Quilted Italian leather, a casually looped knot, and a classic color. It’s available at Saks.com for $1295. Marc Jacobs – Classic Quilted Bruna Bag
