For busy working women, the suit is often the easiest outfit to throw on in the morning. In general, this feature is not about interview suits, which should be as classic and basic as you get — instead, this feature is about the slightly different suit that is fashionable, yet professional.
This suit reminds me of something Kate Hepburn would have worn — it’s simple, beautiful, and flattering. I might swap a different belt (perhaps one with color), or perhaps even add a scarf (tucked into the jacket so only the bit framing your face shows — either one with color or perhaps a wispy white one), but that’s me. The suit (Two-Tone Belted Suit) is $498 at Neiman Marcus.

This week we’re liking this Tahari suit, available exclusively at Bloomingdale’s. We like the long, lean look of the jacket, and the charcoal linen fabric seems perfect for boiling summer days. (We will say, though, that the styling in the picture reminds us a wee bit of Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man — we might try it with a nice silk blouse in a rich color like a French blue, a royal purple, or a lipstick red. Or, if we stuck with a neutral top, we’d add a pop of color with a brooch on the lapel or a statement necklace.) The jacket (Tahari ASL Exclusively for Bloomingdale’s Quinn Linen Jacket
) is $168, and the pants (Tahari ASL Exclusively for Bloomingdale’s Vera Linen Straight-Leg Pants
) are $158.

We’re liking this basic gray pants suit by Tahari. We like the high single button, the straight-cut pants, and the general color of it — as we’ve said before, gray suits can be so much friendlier than black or navy suits. Lovely! With Macy’s current promotion (code SUMMER gets you 15-20% off, plus free shipping if you spend $99), it comes down to $291 (originally $320). Tahari Suit, Single Button Jacket & Straight Leg Pants

Amazingly, it won’t be summer for a few weeks still — and yet we’re digging this seersucker suit. We like the pieces together, but would probably wear them just as much apart: the blazer on top of a navy or black sheath dress, or the seersucker pants with a white blazer and white tee. The suit is on sale, also — it was $280, now $140 in sizes 2-18. It’s also available in plus sizes
14W-24W, on sale for $160. Tahari Suit, Seersucker Jacket and Pants

Even though the styling reminds us a bit of the baddies from “Dude, Where’s My Car,” this is a pretty basic pantsuit on a great sale. (Thanks to reader K for the tip!) It’s still available in sizes 2-12, and it’s marked down from $548 to $237 at Neiman Marcus. Tahari Two-Piece Tech Pantsuit

We’re liking this lovely purple crepe suit from Neiman Marcus. The rougher wool looks lovely against the lighter fabric on the neckline, and we like the empire waist on the dress. Call us crazy, but while we like both pieces together (very sophisticated), we also like them apart — we’d wear the shift dress with perhaps a winter white or khaki blazer, and the jacket with perhaps a white, long-sleeved, hip-length top and navy trousers. The jacket and skirt together (Tahari – Crepe Jacket & Dress) are $580 at Neiman Marcus.
