Our daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices.
Women: Cotton lattice top - Anchor blueWe’re loving this simple cotton tee from Banana Republic with an intricate lattice pattern near the neck.  It’s available in anchor blue (pictured) and black, and — maybe it’s just us — but we would totally ignore that “dry clean” instruction and put it in the delicate cycle.  We’d wear it with a suit and some great earrings or maybe a very, very simple necklace, like a solitaire diamond; it would also look great with a high-waisted skirt.  It’s $50 at Banana Republic.  Women: Cotton lattice top – Anchor blue

Women: Bow-tie top - Summer orchid
Banana Republic has its 30% Off Friends and Family sale this weekend, and have been sending out e-mails to “good customers.” Some customers (like us) got bar-codes for in-store use; others got coupon codes valid for one online use. One generous reader is apparently a very good customer, and C has sent us three online coupon codes to share with the readers. So: post a comment in this thread (tell us what you’re up to this weekend, perhaps), and by 5:00 E.S.T. we’ll pick three lucky winners and e-mail your code.

That said, we’re loving this bow-tie top from Banana Republic. It’s slightly quirky in a vintage way, but not a full homage to the fashion of Mad Men. It’s available for both regular and petites in summer orchid (shown), military navy, and black. It’s $40 at Banana Republic. Women: Bow-tie top – Summer orchid

UPDATE: We’ve picked the winners and notified them.  Congratulations to TGIF@11:52, eplawyer@3:31, Meredith@11:34 — you can thank reader C!  A bit thanks to reader J, also, for sending in an additional, fourth BR code — Carly@10:57, you can thank J.  Ladies, please let us know if you haven’t received an e-mail from us with the code yet.

Reader K alerted us to this lovely blouse on sale at Ann Taylor; as she noted, “the ruching at the front gives us women with a little more up front the ability to button without a cami or double sided tape.” We love the ruching also, as well as the slightly puffed sleeves and the sharply pointed collar. It’s available at AnnTaylor.com for $29.99 (was $59) in a few different colors. Cotton Stretch Short Sleeve Button Front Shirt

Today’s TPS report was suggested by reader S, who writes:

I’ve been obsessed with this J Crew classic shirt for work … it fits me and my freakishly long torso so well, and they switch in a bunch of new colors every season! They’re normally $58, but it seems like they’ve been rotating which colors go on sale, so I’ve been able to slowwwly build my collection until I eventually get them all. Perfect under everything and over anything. Also, I’ve had a few monogrammed and they look so classic and crisp.

As luck would have it, they are on sale at the moment, and (depending on color) priced at either $39.99 or $48. N.B.: they come in petites as well. Women’s solid three-quarter sleeve stretch shirt

Update: A reader suggests we try code EXTRA20, which expires today.

Our daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices. We begin the week in splurge mode, with our most expensive suggestions, and wind our way to Friday, where a less expensive item of clothing might be just what you need to make it to the weekend. iconWe don’t think the picture does this top justice — we love the idea of a satin inset at the square neck, and the puff sleeves add a nice detail. It’s an odd time to be selling it — we always think of a watermelon red as being better for July-February — but perhaps that explains the price: it’s $22 (was $78) at Dillard’s. We’d wear it with gray trousers and a pearl necklace. Nygard Collection Satin-Inset Puff-Sleeve Top

See? Here’s a better picture of the top in yellow (no longer available) — it looks far better than the picture of it in red looks.

iconWe like this colorful top from Nordstrom’s Halogen line. The vertical stripes are flattering, and the purple is subdued but youthful. We’d wear it with gray slacks and a black cardigan or cropped jacket. It’s $48 at Nordstrom.com. Halogen Print Surplice Tee

iconThis top has a lot of elements we normally would not like for the office — chiffon (in the delicate twisted colored bits at the top), a pre-bloused shape, and a tie at the bottom that dangles out. But the multicolored chiffon at the top is just so, so pretty and unusual we had to find a way to make this work for the office. So here’s how we’d wear it: light gray trousers (with the tie either tucked in, or tied in a way that it doesn’t dangle), this top (possibly with a navy camisole beneath it), and a fitted white blazer. Thoughts? It’s available at Nordstrom for $69. Lucky Brand Chiffon Yoke Top

Women: Leaf-print top - Spearmint
We’ve liked this lovely cowl-necked, scoop-necked top since we saw it — it’s a fun, happy, pretty thing that would look great with gray trousers and a white cardi, or beneath a black suit (maybe accented with sapphire jewelry). It’s machine-washable, it’s opaque, and it’s on part of Banana Republic’s latest markdowns (yet the green is still available in lots of sizes). It’s now $29.99 (was $39). Last week, we were surprised to see comments saying that a t-shirt is not appropriate to be worn beneath a suit, and we thought, a) perhaps we’re talking about different things, or b) perhaps we’re terribly wrong. So we thought we’d explore.

For our $.02: Agreed, agreed, you can’t wear a Yeah Yeah Yeahs concert shirt beneath a suit, nor can you wear the kind of v-neck from the Gap that you would paint a garage in. And of course, a silk or cashmere sweater or button-down shirt is preferable. But, we would say that a “dressy” cotton t-shirt like the ones we linked to that day, or very classic tees in a thick cotton or machine-washable fabric (e.g., a crewneck without a ribbed neckline), are totally acceptable to wear beneath a suit, particularly in a solid color like white. Our reasoning here is that we’ve just never studied another woman’s clothing that closely beneath her suit. Is it too tight? Too sheer? Too old-school rayon shell-like? If it isn’t any of those things and the suit looks good, the top generally fades into the background. It’s there to provide the woman with an option to take off her jacket if she needs to, but — as we’ve said before — we generally think you should keep the jacket on if you’re roaming the halls or going to meetings. In addition to being acceptable, there’s a benefit — if it’s machine-washable, it makes a working woman’s life that much easier.

Women: Satin-trim tee - Canary yellow
Three-Quarter Scoop Neck Knit
Above: Women: Satin-trim tee – Canary yellow, available at Banana Republic for $39 (which we’d wash on the delicate cycle) Above: Three-Quarter Scoop Neck Knit, available at Brooks Brothers for $79 Above: Silk Trim U-Neck, available at Ann Taylor on sale for $30.80

But enough of our two cents — what do you guys think?
