Our daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices.

With fall so nearly here, we’re eager to start wearing our twinset shells on top of our blouses for more of a collegiate look. It’s a great way to deal with gaping buttons, and to dampen an otherwise loud print. We’d rock it with a suit and a brightly-colored printed blouse, or for a layered look with a blazer and trousers (or a pencil skirt) made out of different fabrics. This sweater shell (which does come with a matching cardigan, for another classic fall look) is $26.50 at New York & Co. New York & Company Women’s City Style Ribbed Sweater Shell – Black

Our daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices. We begin the week in splurge mode, with our most expensive suggestions, and wind our way to Friday, where a less expensive item of clothing might be just what you need to make it to the weekend.
Cardigans are a basic of the summer for us, and we’re loving the very pretty blue (darker than the one pictured) cardigan on sale at New York & Company. It’s a silk/cotton/nylon blend, it’s sure to lay nicely, keep its shape, and breathe throughout the summer. The cardigan is now marked to 14.78 (was $36) (City Style Twinset Cardigan Sweater); you can also pick up the matching shell for a mere $10.78 (was $26) (City Style Twinset Shell). Shipping is free if you spend more than $75 with code 3089.

Ok, stick with us here — we know the picture at right is a bit frumpy. But: we present you with a Brooks Brothers Italian cashmere sweater set, available in many sizes in white (camel as well), deeply discounted. (The cardigan was $248; now $99. The shell was $188, now $75.) We suggest buying the pair. As a twinset, winter white is all the rage; you can also wear it to spring indoor affairs where you’re not quite sure if the AC will be blaring prematurely. The shell can be worn year-round — we suggest layering it on top of a button-down shirt or blouse (particularly one that’s on the chiffon/see-through side); this academic look brings class and sophistication to an otherwise iffy blouse. And as for the cardigan — well, we don’t need to tell you how freezing offices can be in the summertime. A white cashmere cardigan can be the perfect office staple to go over any outfit. Available for $174 (together) at Brooks Brothers. Cashmere Cardigan & Cashmere Shell

We love the vibrant colors with these classic acrylic/nylon (and machine washable) cardigans from New York & Company, but: truth be told, we’re kind of most excited about the smoky gray — we always have a tough time finding that color twinset. The cardigan is now on sale for $24.45, and the matching shell is available for $18.86. City Style Solid Cardigan, City Style Solid Shell

Every so often, Old Navy hits one out of the park and gives a great basic to supplement a working wardrobe. These cotton twinsets are just right, price-point-wise (the extra-long cardis are on sale for $20 and the tanks are on sale for $10). Worn together or separately, they’re also perfect for this time of year where it feels like summer one minute, and fall the next. They’re available in a huge range of colors; we recommend starting with the black and if you wear it all the time, go back for more. (We think the pink/orange or the navy/lime combinations are particularly appealing.)

Sure, we all know what basics professional women are supposed to have in their closets, but if you’re buying one for the first time or replacing one you’ve worn into the ground, it can be a pain to find exactly the right incarnation in stores. In “The Hunt,” we search the stores for a basic item that every woman should have.
Well, we were surprised when we started hunting for twinsets for this feature. To us, twinsets are a great summer basic — they’re the perfect solution for a deathly hot commute (you just wear the tank or tee and throw the sweater in your bag or over your shoulders) and then when you get to the office and the uber-airconditioning, you can be nice and warm in your cardigan. Sure, we get a lot of use out of them as separate pieces — we wear the sweater top on top of white shirts, or we wear the cardigan by itself over dresses. Still, we like to buy the set as a whole — it’s a better addition to the closet that way; it ties your wardrobe together and extends it and gives you another option for a work-appropriate outfit. Also: great for travel.
So we were surprised at how hard it was to find a collection of twinsets for this week’s The Hunt. Furthermore, there was a huge price gap — anything that had the least bit detailing was going for $1000 plus, with everything else just being a basic. Very interesting! Please tell us in comments — do you still wear sweater sets? Would you buy them if they were easier to find in stores?
