5 Brands Offering Stylish Vegan Shoes for the Office

stylish vegan shoes for the office“Stylish” might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of vegan footwear, but in 2017, it’s definitely possible to find stylish vegan shoes for the office — in all sorts of styles, from pumps to boots to flats.

Reader L recently asked:

Are there any non-leather, stylish and well-wearing shoes out there? I’m a vegetarian and don’t buy leather, but all the man-made or vegan shoes I buy either don’t wear well (usually not longer than a season) or look like pilgrim shoes. I know there are great companies like Matt & Nat who make amazing bags, but I haven’t been able to find a well-made, vegan pump!

In our last post rounding up brands for the stylish vegan professional, we featured several vegan shoe brands, including Olsenhaus, Matt & Nat, Nicora, and Beyond Skin (along with a few vegan clothing and handbag brands), but to answer Reader L’s question, we’re expanding on that a bit today by featuring several more brands recommended by readers (and by some vegan/vegetarian friends) that are great bets for stylish vegan dress shoes. (We last did a roundup of vegan, non-leather shoes for the professional woman in 2010!) The shoes we’re featuring today are affordable, too — plenty are under $100. (By the way, for weekend vegan shoes: Birkenstock recently introduced a vegan collection, some of it for sale at Zappos.) Which are your favorite stylish vegan shoes for the office? What are the brands that you’ve found to wear well and really last?

The Stylish Vegan Professional: Six Brands for Vegan Dress Shoes, Clothes and More

2017 Update: We still recommend these brands for vegan, non-leather clothing, shoes, and bags for the professional woman — but you may want to check out our more recent roundup of stylish vegan shoes for the office.

All right, ladies: If you’re a stylish vegan professional (or are trying to be), which are your favorite vegan brands for workwear? We recently received a question from a job-seeking reader about sources of vegan workwear — both clothes and accessories. Fortunately, it’s far easier to find stylish vegan professional workwear today than, say, 15 years ago. Before highlighting some brands, let’s review what isn’t vegan. Drawing from a post at The Compassionate Closet, here’s a list of materials made from animals (ranging from the obvious to the ones you might not think of): leather, wool, suede, silk, cashmere, mohair, alpaca, angora, worsted, serge, tweed, down, velvet (non-synthetic type), gabardine (wool type), grosgrain (silk type), jersey (wool type), satin (silk type).

A search for “vegan” at Zappos brings up 700+ items, and a search at Nordstrom shows 350 (of course, you can further sort by category), and sites like MooShoes, Ethica, and Vegan Chic bring together many vegan products in one place. (Related: our slow fashion shopping guide.) What sources have you found for quality vegan workwear, vegan dress shoes, or other musts for the stylish vegan professional?

For those of you looking for vegan workwear brands that are specifically vegan-focused — not just animal-free by accident — we’ve rounded up six brands worth trying:

Vegan, Non-Leather Shoes and Bags for the Professional Woman

Beyond Skin Women's Franklin Pump2017 Update: We still stand by a lot of these brands for vegan, non-leather shoes and bags for the professional woman — but you may want to check out our more recent roundup of stylish vegan shoes for the office.

Reader E writes in with a question about non-leather accessories…

My husband and I have decided to go vegetarian for ethical reasons. Although transitioning our diets hasn’t been that difficult, I’m having a hard time figuring out a way to replace leather, especially for shoes and purses. Most of the eco-friendly companies I’ve found just don’t look professional. Any suggestions?

Judging by the comments when we last posted a vegan shoe (also, ahem, the day we forgot it was Earth Day), you are not alone in wanting to non-leather accessories.  Moo Shoes in NYC is the big store we can think of (they “proudly offer the largest variety of vegan shoes and accessories in the world”); VeganChic and the UK-based Neon Collective also sell a wide range of shoes from designers.  We’ve also heard good things about the brands Neuaura, Beyond Skin, olsenHaus, and Charmone(We like the Beyond Skin Women’s Franklin Pump, pictured, available at Endless.com for $215.) You may also want to check out blog Ecouterre, which is “devoted to the future of sustainable fashion design.”

Readers, which vegan accessory lines are your favorites?

Incidentally — here’s a nice blog post we found while browsing — the author goes over some of damage that leather shoes can do to the environment, for those of you who are curious.
