White House|Black Market

Our daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices. We begin the week in splurge mode, with our most expensive suggestions, and wind our way to Friday, where a less expensive item of clothing might be just what you need to make it to the weekend.

Sigh… we are seriously loving this dress from White House|Black Market. The silhouette reminds us of much more expensive dresses — David Meister and Black Halo on one end, Rouland Mouret on another — yet it’s somehow much more ladylike and less sexy than any of those designers. Gorgeous, gorgeous. And it’s marked from $148 to $79 — sold, American. Colorblocked Day Dress

iconWhite House|Black Market is having a great spring sale right now, including this peplum jacket, which we’ve been seeing everywhere of late. (A refresher: a peplum is technically a skirt attached to a jacket; in its 2009 incarnation we’re seeing short flaps on the frontside of the jacket extended from the waist down. It gives the jacket more flounce and accentuates your waist.) We like this for a basic black jacket to keep in your office this summer and throw on over — well, everything — if you’re not already wearing a jacket or cardi. It’s on sale — now $99, was $158. We like this textured cotton sweater blazer from White House|Black Market.  It’s springlike and sophisticated, but at the same time friendly and comfortable-looking.  We’d wear it over shift dresses — navy ones, preferably — in the spring and summer, and with winter white pants in the fall and into the winter.  Available from White House|Black Market for $98.  Textured Sweater Blazer

There’s a freshness and understated exuberance about this silk polka dot dress that you just can’t match with a plain black sheath. We love the pleats at the jewel neckline, the darts above and below the waist, and even the skinny black patent belt with a bow. Get it for $168 at White House|Black Market. We like White House|Black Market a lot, particularly for slightly offbeat yet conservative basics like these “blurred” herringbone pants, which seem to look more “blurred” from far away than they do close-up. We like the fact that there are no cuffs on the pants, and that the pants have substantial stretch to them. We especially love the price: $41, on sale from $108. Contour Blurred Herringbone Pant
