I lost my voice. Never had this happen before. Any anecdata on how long this will last?
The timing is fairly disastrous.

I’ve lost my voice a couple of times; it’s never lasted more than a day. Let it rest, gargle with warm salt water, and take some Advil. If you’re in pain, or it persists, maybe go to the urgent care and have them take a look. Hope you feel better!
Ellen
I know what you are going through. I had alot of that when I was with my ex. I wound up loosing my voice about once every 2 months with him, but since I got rid of him, my voice has remained strong. I think it was psychosomatic, in that he was such a negative influence that I would get a sore throat and loose my voice so that I could avoid him and his control over me. Once he was shown the door by dad, I have yet to loose my voice. Dad says I should never look back, but also never let a man control me the way he did. FOOEY on control freaks like him!
I hope if you are in my shoes, that you will find the root cause and once you fix it, you will be abel to get your voice back PRONTO! YAY!!!!

Happened to me several times in connection with virosis. Rest your voice (remember that whispering is more straining for vocal cords than talking), drink lots of fluids, up your vitamins and minerals. I like to take lozenges with panhenol that you leave to dissolve in your mouth, but there may not be any scientific evidence for that and also they are not available in all countries (they are traditional medicine in a few Eastern European countries). If you think that you lost voice bc there is mucuous on vocal cords, try taking mucolytics.

A couple days? It will be faster the more completely you rest. Your voice especially, but also rest generally.

I am traveling to London next week, it’s totally work related. Just noticed that I have black tie event on the agenda, and not sure what to do. I have 3-4 fancy cocktail dresses, but the number of gowns in my wardrobe is zero.
And I’ve just read that black tie events in London are much stricter.
Thoughts? Should I rent a gown out there or just use one of cocktail dresses?
And what to do with shoes? I thought of wearing practical black Chanel pumps, I also have fancy Louboutains with golden strips and stuff. No bragging here, I hate them so bad, they are too high for me, but maybe it’s worth the torture.

Absolutely get a proper gown. London is much stricter, and YMMV but I even really hate seeing cocktail dresses at black tie events even in North America. But the Brits are rule followers.
Ellen
I think I agree with the OP — get a gown, but I would be careful renting something that someone else may have worn and did NOT properly dry clean. When I was in college, I went to a formal with a guy who rented a tux, but b/c he smelled very funky so, I asked him why and he checked his jacket and found a chunk of petrified beef jerky stuck in his inside lapel pocket. I did not do any slow dancing with him b/c of that smell. FOOEY!

Rent the runway

I’m going to The Book of Mormon at a local performing arts center in a few weeks. What should I wear? It is not a fancy place, but I want to step it up beyond jeans. It will be cold and we’ll be walking a decent amount from the parking lot to the arts center, so warmth is a must. (I’ve become so picky about dressing for the weather. What’s the point of pretty, dressy clothes if I’m cold and miserable the whole time?)

Cashmere sweater dress & boots? Velvet “jeans” and a cute sweater?
anon
Hmm, that could work. I don’t have any velvet jeans that fit at the moment, but it may not hurt to look.
Ms B
Many choices in velveteen at Talbots right now, but YMMV. I would pair with a tissue weight turtleneck, a cashmere duster, booties, and a nice long necklace.
