Black-tie affairs can be tricky in general - but they get to be even trickier if it's a black-tie affair your company is throwing. Here's some of our best advice on what to wear, and what not to wear.

How do you know if it's a black-tie event? Generally, your invitation will tell you what to wear, but there are other clues. For example:  - the event is held on a Saturday.  - significant others are invited, or - it's being held in a swank place.

Is it a black-tie event?

Avoid skin in unexpected places (such as above). No side-boob, no under-boob, and no dresses with the low-low back. Strapless can be acceptable if your dress is well-anchored. A very little amount of cleavage is acceptable.

Cocktail length dresses might be  acceptable if they're fancy enough. You can always accessorize with a crystal or diamond brooch, sparkly shoes, sparkly wrap, etc. This option is great if you're unsure of how fancy the event is.
