For busy working women, the suit is often the easiest outfit to throw on in the morning. In general, this feature is not about interview suits for women, which should be as classic and basic as you get — instead, this feature is about the slightly different suit that is fashionable, yet professional. Also: we just updated our big roundup for the best women's suits of 2025!
This pale pink suit from Reiss is such a lovely color!
The brand notes that it is “infused with linen … [and offers] a breathable feel while presenting a structured silhouette.” Nice!
The blazer and pants come in sizes 0-14 and 0P-12P; there are also matching shorts available. The pieces are $245-$425.

What are you getting the dads in your life for Father’s Day? Looking for ideas for my husband and dad.
Stephen King’s new book!
Ahh I forgot this came out! DH and I listen to Stephen King books on roadtrips and Holly Gibney is our favorite!
A nut box from Bonnie & Pop
Um thank you I just bought this too.
I am getting my husband and his dad copies of the same book so they can read and discuss together.
I love that they have this relationship!
Some sort of spendy piece of red meat for DH.
Chocolate milkshake and visit with the grands for dad.
I just discovered that the scottish comedy, Still Game, put out a comic book last year, so ordered that. It’ll come too late, but it’s the thought that counts, I guess.
Engraved compass from Stanley London.
Murdle book – he likes crosswords, I think he will like this (and I’m curious about it too).
Some Jibbitz for his Crocs from our daughter. They’re the Croc-wearers in the family.
Probably some snacks since we leave for the beach the next day.
For my dad….driving his grandaughter down to the beach for the family vacay, ha.
I got the Murdle book (v1) for my Dad for Xmas and got a copy to do also – I like it! Vaguely reminiscent of SAT logic games? We both like Sudoku also.
I also got the murdles for my dad and brother in law for Christmas. Big hit.
Socks from divvyupsocks.com with faces of the grandkids. They came out great, were easy to order, arrived quickly, and my husband said they were the best Father’s Day gift ever!
Apple Watch SE. He’s very into his fitness watch but it doesn’t have all the features he wants.
A couple of embroidered performance polos from his Alma Mater.
I’m tickled with myself about what I got DH for our fourth anniversary and wanted to share with someone (but not irl because it’s a little braggy). I like to follow traditional gift themes, mostly because his birthday (and now Father’s Day, which is newly relevant to us!) is within a month of our anniversary so I need the extra inspiration. And anything really good/pricey is a bday gift. Fourth anniversary is flowers or fruit. Flowers and fruit is really hard for a man!
Here’s what I came up with:
– a set of c!cktail (does that still trigger mod?) infusion kits with extra refills for his favorite. The infusions are fruit and/or floral.
– a Hawaiian shirt with our kittens’ faces on it. I previously got him one with our now passed on cat, it was a big hit, but obviously he has feelings about wearing it.
– a lego set of bamboo and a bonsai tree for his desk at work. Bamboo isn’t exactly a flower but he and his coworkers had an issue involving bamboo so I think they’ll chuckle or at least eye roll at it. The bonsai tree has flowers.
– a cherry wood desk organizer
Love!!
These are great!
Omg a Hawaiian shirt with your cats’ faces? That is awesome, now I have to get one for my DH. Would love the link please?
A client event for work is bringing me from Boston to Vail in July, midweek if that matters.
I can fly direct to Denver and rent a car or fly in to Vail via a layover in DFW most likely but possibly elsewhere. I’ve never been… any thoughts? The flights through Denver get me in / out of Vail with plenty of time to make the event itself. My return flight to Boston would leave at 11:30am so I’d plan to leave Vail at 7 or 7:30. As a mom of little kids, that’s definitely not too early for me.
I generally avoid layovers on work travel at all costs but the schedule here is a little lax should I be delayed. On the other hand, I really don’t mind driving and love new scenery (i have to assume it’s a scenic drive…). WWYD?
I would absolutely do the layover and fly directly in to Vail in this case. That drive is not super easy unless you’re used to mountain driving (especially in the winter, but it’s still not exactly east coast driving in the summer).
I normally am team nonstop but two negatives to consider as you weigh your pros and cons-
1. I don’t particularly like the Denver airport as it feels large just because they had the space for it, not because it’s laid out in a way that is actually useful for travelers.
2. The drive is pretty once you get to the mountains, but the stretch from the airport through Denver is congested (esp. at rush hour which you will hit when leaving). The trucks kind of stress me out with all the twists and elevation changes.
I hate the Denver airport and generally avoid it whenever possible.
i am also normally team avoid layovers, but the denver airport is a mess and while it can be a scenic drive it is also a bit scary and idk that i’d want to do it myself especially if there ends up being any sort of bad weather. also Vail in July is gorgeous (though maybe the cool mountain area isn’t as appreciated if you are coming from Boston, while for this Texan, it sounds glorious) if you have any way to add on a day, do it!
I would drive. It is in the mountains, but I think it’s a nice drive. You’re also not subject to delays at Vail or as bumpy of a flight.
Yes, it’s a scenic drive! I like the drive up I-70 out of Denver, so I’d drive it—especially if there was any free time in/around the client event. Having a car would let me get out and explore the Vail area a bit.
Definitely fly directly to Vail. The Denver airport is chaos and I hate it. And there will be SO MUCH TRAFFIC getting out from the airport and driving across Denver to get to the pretty mountain part of the drive.
This right here. I70 can be an insane mess of traffic.
I would look at total travel time. If they’re basically equal, I would fly to Vail. If flying to Denver and driving is faster, I would do that.
For those of you who actually play tennis frequently, please tell me your secrets. I just clicked on the darling Mark & Graham tennis bags and wanted to play so badly. I’m coming off of a 5-year rough patch (COVID, surgery, surgery, Kid With Issues, Eldercare, Eldercare) and want to add that back as my first priority now that things have calmed down. Finding a schedule that works and populating it with similar “rusty 3.0” people will likely be quite the challenge now that all of my connections are stale and it’s summer. Advice? I’d love to need a new tennis bag, but my one from 2017 is lightly used.
Join a tennis club with a women’s drills group
Find a hitting partner and set up a weekly date
Join a 3.0 league
i dont know where you live, but the JCC/Ys near us have tennis lessons/skills groups. Some are during the day, which is obviously hard for those of us with jobs, but they have a few that meet in the evenings. I really wanted to learn pickleball and took two lessons and it was fun, but apparently i live in an area with a lot of SAHMs and people with jobs more flexible than mine bc everyone wants to play at like 11am on a Tuesday
Same.
No advice but your opening sentence reminds me of Andre Leon Talley playing tennis in the September issue. He’s got the outfit, and that’s really all that matters. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=esSJR57mKlc
Love me some ALT. Best thing about Vogue and he was from NC. Even my dad (engineer, farmer) knew who he was.
Love him so much. RIP
I have that MG tennis bag and really don’t like it. It has like no pockets that are useful. There’s one on the front but it doesn’t zip and the one inside is so big that it doesn’t really count as a pocket. Mine is a few years old so it may have been updated.
My search skills are failing me. Within the last year or so, there was a discussion with recommendations for car service from the airport in NYC and lots of people liked one the services. Any insight on who to use? (And, yes, it’s complicated on why not uber…)
Legends Limo maybe? I used them based on a recommendation from here for a family of 4 traveling with bags and an adult who needs a big car to have enough room for comfort. Can confirm that they came with a nice Escalade, a vetted driver, and good NYC airport working knowledge (LaGuardia and Newark). I feel that NYC airports are a varsity sport and was happy to pay for good service.
I have used and recommended Legends here. Their drivers and cars have always been great.
I generally use Eastern Luxury — https://www.easternride.com/– but am not particularly picky. Honestly, a cab is usually the easiest if you are starting at the airport. Uber/Lyft are a PITA because the designated pickup area is a schlep from the terminal, at least at LaGuardia.
I asked for a car service rec about 2 years ago and several people said Legends Limousine. I used them on my trip in August 2023 and they were great. Thanks to whoever responded then!
How much prep do you do for substantive interviews? Especially if the practice area would be new to you/most applicants and they already know this about you?
I have a public sector job I like well enough and it is not at risk (in Canada). I’ve got an upcoming interview (date tbd) for a different role in a really different substantive area of law, but where I have some obvious transferrable skills and experience.
I want to be reasonably prepared and not embarrass myself, but also people spend years developing expertise in this niche area. I know it is a marked interview with a mix of substantive and behavioral questions. I’ve conducted 100’s of interviews for my current niche employer and it seems like most applicants do little prep – I’m already well beyond that level.
What’s the norm nowadays for people in marked/competition based interviews?
I’m curious about the legal landscape around elder abuse issues and wonder if anyone here knows. This is idle wondering on my part, I’m not personally impacted. Let’s say grandma is living with her (adult) grands in a very rundown place and was locked in her room with no access to a bathroom. A neighbor reports, grandma is removed by the state and placed… where? Let’s say the grands very much want her to return, grandma doesn’t want to return.
Where is it that elderly people are taken in these situations? I assume it must be a state run assisted living facility. Who pays for that? I assume the state/medicare. Does grandma only get to stay there if she has nowhere else to go, kind of like a foster care placement? Or can grandma choose to stay there if she’s mentally competent? Will she get a GAL type person appointed to defend her if the grands challenge competency or otherwise try to force her to return? If they succeed at the competency piece, will grandma get a GAL to defend her against having to return to the grands?
I mean, would she be removed by the state or would they assign a home care helper?
Why would they send a home care helper into an abusive situation? You think she’s going to come in and fight the family?
Plus, you generally have to find a helper and have a cooperating house. Not sure you have that here.
I misunderstood that this was a case of neglect. But also disabled people are left on abusive households all the time and sometimes do get home care (which is sometimes also abusive).
Sorry, thought you were the OP
IANAL, but my assumption would be that if werent’ competent to handle her own affairs and no suitable guardian was available, the state would petition for guardianship. The public guardian would then use her assets, if any, to place her in an appropriate living situation, and would apply on her behalf for any public benefits for which she was eligible. I don’t think the state runs assisted living facilities that are basically orphanages for old people.
Wasn’t this part of the plot of that I Care A Lot movie?
Yes, I believe she can ask for a GAL. I also believe the issue of whether she is competent and the issue of whether the proposed guardian is suitable can be argued separately. Also, someone should be reporting the abuse to Adult Protective Services so there is a record.
In most states, if grandma owns the house and can’t live there anymore, grandma will have to spend down her assets to pay for her care at an assisted living place. A lot depends on whether she is mentally competent, whether responsible relatives could step in, and what the guardianship situation is like in that state. Some states have a class of somewhat-shady professional guardians (like in I Care A Lot), other states are more hands-off.
What does everyone use for a smart thermostat? I’ve always had ecobee but I hate that you have to do a 5-degree range.
No suggestions but we just got our HVAC replaced and the contractor told us a 5 degree range is normal. We would’ve had to spend like 3x as much to get a system that would pinpoint temperature more than that, and he said that’s way overkill for our sized house (not small! 3k sq ft), plus that system costs more month to month to run.
A 3000 sf house should have more than one zone.
Not the OP but – In theory yes but you need to be able to close off areas. We have a very open floor plan house (3500 sf?) and the only area we could’ve really shut off was the basement. Yes, open floor plans are stupid, do not recommend.
Do you have multiple floors? We have a main floor zone, an upstairs zone, and a basement zone (in a 2500 sq ft house)
It’s two zones I think? It’s only one floor but there’s a different thermostat for the bedroom “half” of the house and the common areas. But it’s still a 5 degree temperate swing in each zone.
Resideo, no complaints. I think where you put the thermostat vs. where you’re spending your time matters more than which one you have.
I have an Emerson Sensi unit, installed in my small house about 7 years ago, that I’ve been happy with. I’m not sure what you mean by the 5-degree range, but I set mine to a specific temperature.
We also have this, no complaints. It’s a normal thermostat where you set the temperature…
I think my thermostat is relatively “dumb” but I can adjust the swing from 3 degrees (factory preset) to zero.
Nest
I have no idea what the degree swing is, but all our HVAC people recommend Honeywell (and yes we’ve had multiple teams for different issues)
We have Nests and I hate them. They think that if we’re not in the room they don’t have to work, which is NOT IT.
Also because most of them don’t have buttons they are fickle to adjust manually. When we stay with my parents, the guest bedrooms are on their own zone and I can’t figure out how to set a “temporary hold” like I can on my Honeywell. I end up readjusting the temp three times a night as it keeps resetting itself back to the usual program
None, just an old dumb programmable Honeywell.
We had a Sensi for a hot minute and gave up on it because it would not for love or money stay connected to our WiFi. And in spite of their customer service telling me I could just log in and change the temp from my browser, that was not true – the browser was only good for a temporary override. So in a days-long subzero cold snap last winter, I had to wake up every two hours, log in on my browser, and override the stupid unit to tell it to keep the furnace running and not shut off. At 2am the second day of this, I tore the damn thing off the wall and reinstalled the dumb thermostat.
I have zero interest in ever using and would absolutely never recommend any kind of smart device after that experience.
+1 dumb thermostats do everything I need them to do
Unless you leave the house for a trip and realize you forgot to adjust the program! Or want to turn the heat back up while you’re on your way back from said trip. We also enroll our smart thermostats into some program by our energy company and get a $20+ gift card for each one each year
I can see that, but we have always left it running normally for the cats. It’s also a small place and doesn’t take long to cool down or heat up honestly.
The cats are why we do have a smart smoke detector.
I had an interview over 3 weeks ago at a large company for a job I really want. I’ve since followed up with both recruiters and I’ve heard nothing. The application portal still says I’m in the interview phase. I’m honestly mad that the recruiters are ignoring me, and I can’t wait around forever (I’m actively job searching and interviewing), but this job was my first choice. At what point is it okay to reach out to the hiring manager herself and ask for a status update?
If you have another offer, you could. Otherwise I would not. Ever.
This. especially at a large company, the hiring manager is likely to be annoyed and just refer you back to the recruiter.
oh don’t. It can take a good 4 weeks or more to even schedule all candidates that people want to bring in. So if you were the first candidate they might not have even talked to everyone yet.
Three weeks isn’t very long at a large company with likely multiple rounds, especially this time of year. You may still be in active consideration, or they may have decided to move forward with other candidates through multiple rounds of interviews. They may even be making an offer with someone and waiting for them to sign. Most companies wouldn’t move you out of interview stage (if you’re a reasonably good candidate) until they have a final commitment with someone since so many things can influence these decisions, from a front-runner accepting a position to a candidate flubbing an interview or background check to simply needing more time to get interviews on busy calendars when team members are taking off for graduations and summer vacations. I would not contact again unless you have an offer elsewhere.
Resist the urge to follow up!
My firm is hiring for a role where we have one candidate through the interview process, three more scheduled, but we won’t be through them for another two months. We did tell the first one we will reach out once all candidates have been interviewed (although we did also tell him our general timeline). If he starts reaching out sooner we would not be able to do anything for him. And if he has another offer, we would wish him well.
Any advice for planning a family trip where one adult may have some IBS or gallbladder issues? Domestic car travel has become very hit or miss and often the person has to back out of things and stay close to a bathroom. Which is OK if there are other adults. But international? What do you do in advance to prepare for a red-eye to Europe and then not being able to check in right away? Any meds or dietary rules to follow in advance or doctor visit things to do in advance? He wants to try to go and I feel like if he does, we need all the supports (but IDK what that looks like other than expecting cancellations and having an accommodation with at least two bathrooms).
Buy travel insurance that covers pre-existing conditions, but read the fine print.
Book an aisle seat preferably in premium economy. Book a hotel for the night before and reconfirm that several times so they can go right in. Or take a river cruise
Counterpoint: Premium Economy is at the front of the economy cabin so it’s as far as possible from the economy bathrooms at the back of the plane, and is generally not allowed to use the first class lavs up front. So sitting in PE can actually be the worst for someone who needs quick bathroom access.
Better to get a seat farther back in economy so they can be close to the bathroom. (If it’s a 777 there may be mid-cabin lavs that are close to Premium Economy, but if it’s a 787 there won’t be, and there will be 200 people between OP’s traveler and the bathroom they may need to use in a hurry.
Signed – someone who prioritizes easy bathroom access on flights
On international flights where premium economy is a separate cabin category (not just “economy plus” or whatever your airline calls the extra legroom seats), it has its own set of bathrooms.
You get an aisle seat close to the bathroom and pay for an extra night at the hotel so that the room is yours whenever (but definitely confirm with the property directly – since some hotels will mark you as a no-show if you don’t arrive in the evening like most people would).
I don’t have the same medical issues but the same problem and have to travel to conferences almost monthly for work. Triggers are different for people. For me, when I can, I try to schedule flights midday or later (early mornings are very hard for me since my body needs time to settle). I also avoid eating until I’m at my destination as much as I can. If my travel day is very long and I have to eat, I have a gut-friendly protein bar my nutritionist recommended (https://store.drruscio.com/products/evolution-bar ). If I know I have something big coming up, I use the elemental health drinks from the same place in the days beforehand so inflammation is better controlled. I want my gut in the best shape it can be to manage the stress. Before and during my trips, I avoid leafy greens and other non-soluble fiber. Your relative likely knows his triggers. If he doesn’t, he should talk with a doctor and see if there are things that can help. For some folks it’s avoiding gluten, for example, while others may be fine.
I think cruises would be ideal for this situation? He could stay on the ship near a bathroom and others could do excursions. Lots of options in Europe and elsewhere.
And yes book a hotel for the night before your arrival, so you can check into the hotel as soon as you arrive, even if it’s at 6 am. We don’t have any gastro issues but like to do this just because it allows you to take a solid nap and then get in a real afternoon of sightseeing and a nice dinner where you’re not collapsing from exhaustion. Also helps push bedtime later which helps with jetlag recovery.
Business class if you can swing it, or premium economy if not. There will be fewer passenger per bathroom in business, and they may be roomier. Use seatguru to check the configuration on your particular aircraft and flight so that you can choose seats close to a bathroom. Try and have fast track and lounge access. If you have any long layovers, there might be an airport hotel with day rooms.
For peace of mind you can have a look at airport maps to check where the different bathrooms are, same for rail stations etc. If you expect any language problems, try to learn to ask for the HC toilet. (Don’t ask for a bathroom, Europeans don’t use that euphemism for toilet.) You might have some luck with travel guides that are curated for accessability to plan outings.
Seatguru is years out of date – aeropla is where it’s at now
You don’t go.
Crohn’s and Colitis community has the best info on this.
See what relative thinks. Everyone is different. I don’t have the same health issues but something similar. But for me, things that help are scheduling flights mid-day or later. I follow an anti-inflammation diet and avoid triggers of non-soluble fiber in the days leading up to a significant travel day (including before the trip home) so my gut health is at its best. I avoid eating during flight days as much as I can. And when I do eat, I have a meal replacement bar that my nutritionist recommended (Evolution protein Mark Ruscio).
I avoid eating much the day of my international flights. It’s just really inconvenient to need to use the bathroom while flying so I mostly fast and just drink water.
IIRC, didn’t Kate Middleton mostly avoid eating before scheduled appearances because of her Crohn’s disease?
She’s never said she’s had Crohn’s disease. This is all rumor and speculation.
Not ready to tell anyone besides my husband in real life because I don’t want to count my chickens until I actually have a start date, but I got a verbal job offer! I have been looking since Jan, and it’s been a slog.
Its a bit of a stretch role for me, and leading some functions I have no direct experience in. I’ll have all kinds of imposter syndrome, but hopeful this is A Good Thing.
Great to hear some happy news. Congratulations!!
Congratulations!
You are awesome! Congratulations!
Is anyone on with good nonprofit board experience? Any thoughts about provisions in bylaws to require staff to inform the board re. any ongoing litigation, settlements, etc? I’m on a board with no such requirement, and where litigation is an unusual occurrence. We were named in a case recently, though, and the board had little input re. the resolution. Should this be a concern?
Has everyone’s spam taken a big leap lately? Just today I got a “got some spots available for a deterministic distribution model (a16z Sequoia)” and “I have a couple invites left to a venture acquisition kickoff” — what is up with these? Even if I were that wealthy I wouldn’t take random cold calls. They use my name, they come only to me… it’s very bizarre.
That just sounds like your contact info was included in some sales list or other that recently made the rounds. Block and delete, on repeat.
I’ve started to get cold texts that say things like “are you available for weekend work” and such. Not sure why. Mine don’t have my name in them though. That’s a bit uncomfortable. Have any companies you deal with had recent data breaches?
who can keep track, it seems like they all have data breaches all the time. i worry more about passwords, these are just email addresses i’ve tried to keep really private.
