  1. Anyone have a Burberry trench? There is a Burberry Brit trench on sale at Nordstrom that I am considering. Is it worth the money? Is there a quality difference between Burberry London and Burberry Brit?

    1. WHAT?!? Why did you tell me they are on sale??? I have wanted one for a while now… they are so beautiful!! no idea if brit is different than london– I havent done my research yet

    2. The difference mainly comes down to material and country of origin. The difference in material is difficult to explain (you just have to go to the store and feel it for yourself) but overall London coats are sturdier (especially if the fabric is Gaberdine). Whether you think the better material is worth the price difference is your call.

The label on my “Buckingham” trench coat from the London line says “Made in the United Kingdom.” I do not have a coat from the Brit line, but I have heard that the Brit line is made in China.

      1. Forgot to add: Burberry provides complimentary tailoring service for all London coats purchased from their stores (anything from shortening/slimming the sleeves, adjusting the shoulders or the belt). I am not sure if Burberry Brit provides a similar service. And if you buy from a department store, you would be more or less on your own. I can never find anything off the rack (as a very petite person), so this was a major incentive for buying straight from Burberry London.

I swear I do NOT work for Burberry. :)

  2. Has anyone been successful getting price adjustments from Nordstrom outside of the 2 week window? I never remember them having the 2 week window, and mainly shop there because of how helpful/convenient it is.

I got a pair of shoes for full price about a month and a half ago and now it’s on the half yearly sale for 40% off (like $150!). The shoes have never been worn, were shipped to my house while I was traveling for two weeks and then I went into finals (and wasn’t going anywhere in fancy shoes). The person I spoke to on live-chat was remarkably unhelpful. She kept saying that since my size was sold out online that they wouldn’t adjust for my size. That seems strict? If I were home and able to take the shoes to a physical store I feel like I’d be allowed to return them and then rebuy them on sale- is that not true?

This made me grumpy over lunch. Should I get over it or keep asking?

    1. Hmm…I would definitely call their main customer service line, and ask about this. They’ve been very good with me about price adjustments.

    2. Yep, multiple times today. Just be uber nice and try again to get a different person. Only stuff you bought online though ( which it sounds like you did)

  3. Someone please explain to me who pays nearly $300 (on sale!) for a wool blend shell? I mean, I get paying more for quality, if I’m going to pay $300 for a shell it had better magically make me look like Angelina Jolie and give me a superpower.

  4. Is this better / same / different than the NAS? Just trying to time when to pull the trigger on some shopping.

    1. Different. NAS has things for the upcoming season, so new colors on old favorites, and new styles. Prices on old favorites are about the same, in my experience.

  5. I didn’t order The Skirt last year during the sale because I saw they changed the fit of it. Does anyone know whether they’ve changed it back to the original fit this year, or should I continue to content myself with the two older ones I have? I loved the old Skirt because it fit my small waist AND my proportionately larger hips/butt where most pencil skirts that fit my hips/butt are loose and gappy in the waist.

    1. I will follow the responses to this with great interest. I’m with Emmy on this.

    2. FWIW, I am about the same shape you are, and I bought The Skirt for the first time in March and it fits me perfectly. Since I’ve never bought it before I can’t comment on any changes.

    3. I tried the redone skirt last year and sent it back. This year’s skirt in a 6 fit me perfectly (and I have a 29″ waist and 38″ hips and tend to take sizes in curvy fits).

      1. Me too. 32″ waist, 42″ hips, size 12 fit perfectly. I was hesitant because it was my first Skirt, and I’d read all the great reviews and bemoaning of the new one, and the cobalt one I bought this March has already become a 1x a week wear.

  6. On a similar note to Emmy, has anyone tried the Halogen Seamed Sheath Dress? I’m very tempted, but sheaths can be so hit-or-miss for me.

    1. Curious about this dress, too. I own the Tahari sheath in most colors already and would love to just order this in a bunch of colors and be done with my summer wardrobe. Anyone know how they compare size wise?

      1. …and I just bought 2 because things were selling out. Fingers crossed on fit and length, will report back.

    2. I tried the dresses and they went back because they were ridiculously short. The regular hit a few inches above my knee and I’m 5’5″ on a good day.

  7. I bought 2 suits earlier this Spring and now they are on sale. Does anyone know if they will do a price adjustment?

    1. I had them price adjust an online purchase from February today… Try the chat function. You may have to try more than once.

    2. Well both of them were in store purchases so chat was not able to help. I called the Tyson’s corner store and they said it had to be within 14 days. I’m very disappointed because it was a big purchase (for me) and the associate encouraged me to buy them right away since they were going out of season. Well, now they are both 50% off online.

    3. You could try to buy again in your size at the reduced price, and then return those new suits based on your original purchase price / receipt? Nordstrom should take returns at any time, so ask them to look it up on your credit card record or something.

  8. I’m starting a new job soon and want to update my work wardrobe a bit– it’s a “business casual” office but I think that essentially means no suits, just dressy pants/skirts/nice shirts. The women who work there tend to be very fashionable and wear heels but there are also a good number of young people at the company starting out on limited budgets. What items would you add if you were stepping up your wardrobe? I tend to veer on the classic side. I’m thinking of a new pair of shoes or two. What about outerwear? accessories? basic workwear that gets tons of use? any recs?

Also please feel free to me that I should wait to start working before I build my wardrobe since my sense will change when I get there… I am just way too excited to shop and will take any excuse.

    1. I was in a similar situation last year. I started with a nice pair of black slacks (ann taylor or banana republic), 2 bright colored, stylish blouses and a pair good quality black heels (don’t need Prada, but don’t get Payless either). Try Vince Camuto, Cosmo Corso, Cole Haan if on sale.

I also got some fun, but office-appropriate earrings at Target and a scarf on sale at J Crew. It was enough to get me started.
      YMMV

  9. Does anyone have a suggestion for a cute pair of jeans for warm weather? I am an apple shape, size 12, with terrible muffin top. I love the Gap Long and Lean jeans which I found through *this site* recommendations. Now that it’s getting hot, I’d like to find something lighter, shorter, with less fabric around my calves! Nordstrom has a bunch of capri-length jeans on sale but I feel like those might edge into dowdy territory on someone as large as I am.

    1. Have you ever tried the JAG pull-on jeans? They are great for minimizing muffin top. The Fenmore Crop style is a pull-on denim capri with a straight leg. I think you might like them. Use your local search engine to find the best deal. I don’t think the capri length would be dowdy, but they also have full-length (Peri maybe).

      1. I am different size but similar proportions, also love the long and leans. I have had great luck at Loft in the “modern straight” fit which they have right now in some crops but have also seen in variety of full length pants. Their skinnies do nothing for me but the straights seem to do the trick.

        1. I have also had good luck with Old Navy’s “Diva” fit, and you can’t beat the price.

  10. I have an emergency prep question for the hive. I keep a backpack in my car with a change of clothes, shoes, and some food and water in case we have an earthquake or bad fire that interferes with the roads and I end up having to walk home.

At my new place, we park about .3-.4 of a mile from the office and walk over 2 pedestrian bridges to come in. Lots of high rise buildings around. My concern is, in an earthquake, I’m likely not going to be allowed into the parking garage to get at my car, much less my extra stuff. That leaves me thinking I need one for car and off office both.

For those of you that have this situation, or take public transportation, what type of bag do you use for your “get home bag.” I have a really big bottom file drawer I could fit a small to medium sized backpack in, but I’m thinking I should get something in all black and more conservative than your normal day pack to keep in my drawer. Just curious what everyone else does.

    1. I’m thinking that I’m not nearly prepared enough for emergencies, i.e. I have no preparations at all. Then again, my area doesn’t really have any natural disasters…I mean maybe large hail possibly a flood? I guess snowstorm is also likely, though not this time of year (…knock on wood).

    2. Makes sense. I’m probably just looking for a reason to buy an new pack (with some of us it’s shoes…for me it is backpacks and camping gear…).

Earthquakes are really my main concern, but after that are major power outages due to power grid stress, or flooding down out of the hills in a major rain (Los Angeles doesn’t really have storm drains/gutters, they just let it all run either into the concrete trough / “LA River” or through the streets).

My office is on the opposite side of our “4 Level” intersection from where I live, and it’s pretty much a sure thing that that interchange will be majorly damaged in anything above about a 5.5. It’s 2 levels of freeway in the middle, with a street running under and a street/over-crossing over the whole thing. It’s scary!

      1. A small emergency kit in the office is definitely a good idea. Just throw something together in a tote or backpack. No one is going to see it outside of an emergency so why care. If the concern is getting it into the drawer just tuck it into a bigger bag coming in.

On a side note, maybe it’s just me but it’s not that dangerous here….

Earthquakes can be sudden and devastating yes. But walking back 21 mi to home? I’m gonna hunker down in my office with my granola bars and water and dried fruit. Duck and cover :)

But seriously though… floods? Fires? Blackouts? Most of these have some bit of warning beforehand…

  11. Interesting thought. My hubs has gotten very into “prepping” since the hurricane here and we now have a big stash of stuff in our apartment. I leave a pair of flats at the office and have food and water here that I could grab on my way out. But I haven’t done anything else and certainly don’t have a special bag set aside to carry things in. I just thought I could put on my flats and walk home with my purse. I do want to bring in a small flashlight, though.

In your situation, I think it makes sense to keep the supplies at your actual office. I’m thinking earthquakes are your major concern. If you want it to be a backpack, I don’t think it matters what it looks like, under these circumstances.

  12. How often do Nordstrom change up the colors of The Skirt? I have it in Black and Royal Blue now, and am hoping it will come around in dark grey, navy, and brown (I missed it in Camel when it was available in Feb).
