Anyone in the hive have an opinion of of (fake) diamond studs are more mature/professional than pearl studs? I’ve been wearing my pearls for years but am considering a change.
I don’t think so.
I find pearls more professional. I think it really depends on the fake diamond studs whether I consider them professional – I would consider non-bling-y, subtle, smaller ones appropriate.
I also just generally prefer pearls. If you’ve been wearing pearls for years and want to switch it up, maybe just add diamond studs in occasionally and see how you like it!
I think pearl studs can look kind of dated sometimes, particularly if they are large. I would also avoid with pearl-type necklaces.
I would consider them interchangeable, from a professionalism standpoint.
Thank you all very much. The pearls will stay.
It seems that my post disappeared, but I apologize if it shows up later.
I’m looking for some shopping advice/assistance from you all. I’m looking for a button down, collared (with the upright collar) shirt for interviewing this fall. I’d prefer blue or white, but any traditional color (my suits are black and grey). I’ve been having trouble finding one that buttons up high enough (most seem to be too low and then show a lot of cleavage, which is not going to work) and has a solid collar (the only ones I’ve found that button up high enough have the flat collars or floppy ones. The only one I’ve found is from Jones New York, but it is long sleeved (won’t work for August) and I cannot find it online or in stores anymore (was hoping for its short sleeved friend).
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated! I figured this was a good place to post, since I’m hoping to find one at a discount!
I had the same problem. I got 3/4 sleeve shirts that were too-low cut from BR Factory Outlet and had a seamstress put a small snap above the last button. It does the trick but does come unsnapped if I move my arms too wide. Good for every day work, probably not an interview. Have you considered silk shells instead? I find I look more professional in those than button-front shirts because of my large chest.
No advice about the collared shirt, but in case you don’t want to wear one and feel like you “have” to – you definitely don’t. I find silk (or satin) shells to be much more comfortable and much smoother and better looking under a suit. The Limited usually has some on sale for around $20-$30. I’ve worn them for many successful interviews, including OCI.
Exactly what I was going to say. You don’t have to wear a button up shirt with your suit for interviewing. If you want to wear a button up shirt, that’s great, but a shell (either sweater or silk or satin) is just as appropriate.
+1. it was 90 degrees when I did OCI so I wore sleeveless, lightweight sweaters (and kept my jacket on during the interview, of course).

+1
so very delayed, but thanks a bunch!
I personally feel more professional and interview-ready in a button down (so I guess it is more of a mindset thing), though I think shells can look just as good. I might try more shells.
Thanks again – this one looks good!
FYI: For the Anthro sale, the 20% discount only shows up in the cart.
I am so glad you mentioned the Lord and Taylor website thing, Kat. I thought it was just me or something with our home computer. It takes forever to search their site (it’s got its own awful navigation problems) and then all that work just goes to nothing. I’ve stopped shopping there online now after a few of the surprise emptyings when I go to pay (and I’ve had multiple items, so I don’t think it’s just that supply ran out). I don’t know how they can keep chugging along without fixing that already.
I suspect I’m not the only L&T fan who has just gone bricks and mortar. It’s shocking to me that a major retailer like that can’t get its search engine, filters, and payment process going when all its competitors have. (OK, rant over.)
Just got off the phone from a half hour chat with someone who didn’t tell me what I wanted to hear, but has given me some good advice on what I need to do/have on my resume and promises to contact someone from his organization in my area to see if there’s a way I could work with her (probably volunteer–it’s a non-profit organization). All contact between us has been by phone or email. Is the following email sufficient as a thank-you, and would it be appropriate to come back to him in a couple months to say I just want to touch base and tell you what I’ve been doing, then list the things I’ve done that follow his advice?
Thanks for taking your time to review my documents and chat with me this morning. Your honest appraisal and advice are much appreciated. I look forward to hearing from the [organization’s] advocate in [state capital] in the near future.
Best wishes,
That email is sufficient to be polite, but following up in a few months helps to cultivate a mentor for long term professional assistance. (People like to know their advice was followed, especially if it worked).
Awesome list – We also have NAS – Nordstrom Anniversary Sale coming up soon! Great opportunity to see new Fall clothes.
