Charlotte Tilsbury Happikiss Lipstick in Pillowtalk

I recently(ish) got a bunch of lipsticks from Sephora and Nordstrom, and this is one of the keepers — Charlotte Tilbury's Hyaluronic Happikiss Lipstick Balm in Pillowtalk.

They describe the color as “iconic nudey-pink,” and I have to say I really agree with that. I will admit, years ago I read that older women should prefer pink lipsticks — and as I've aged I now always think about that when choosing a lipstick. As someone who came of age in the 90s, I think I can also say with some confidence that beigy-brown nudes just kind of make me look dead, with a number of mauves being a close call there, too. I'm cool-toned and pale, and the Pillowtalk color suits me nicely.

In terms of formula, it is very balm-y to me — it feels less sticky than a Tarte Maracuja, but much wetter than a Merit or MAC. It also has some shine to it, more so than Clinique Black Honey.

You can get the lipstick at multiple stores, but at Nordstrom it's on sale for 15% off at the moment, plus you get 6x beauty points. You can also find it at Sephora and Ulta, full price at $35.

  1. I have a bunch of work deadlines coming up, and unfortunately, my stress-induced IBS has kicked in. Ugh. I feel gross, and it’s super distracting. Any tips on getting through this stretch? Things to eat, stuff to do? I worked out this morning, which I thought would help with my overall stress, but nope. My brain and gut are angry.

    1. It’s definitely IBS and not IBD? (Stress is a huge IBD trigger too.)

Is there a temporary exclusion diet that calms it down? (Formula meal replacement shakes? Chicken and rice?) It sounds like you aren’t sure if you’re asking things to eat, but this is the kind of thing dietitians help IBS patients sort out.

    2. Imodium, lukewarm peppermint tea, and a heating pad. Avoid caffeine (including chocolate), high fiber foods, hot liquids, saturated fat, and alcohol. Stick to lean meat, white carbs, and watery produce (like tomatoes instead of carrots).

    3. Celiac sufferer here. You need to talk to your GI doctor (or even a nurse in the practice) for concrete advice that makes sense for your situation.

For me: After years of resisting even the idea, I found my doctor’s advice to add fiber actually helps–done very carefully–when symptoms are bad. I use Citrucel (GF) 2X/day, starting with the faster-acting powder drink and later tapering off to the pills.

Your doctor may prescribe dicyclomine. It’s a hard med, but it works. I take it only if I must be “on” (give a presentation at work, travel, etc.). Imodium accomplishes nothing.

Beyond that: Very limited, gentle exercise only. Treat yourself like the sick person you are. Gentle walks or other careful movement. Warm baths, heating pad if they feel good. Wear comfortable, soft clothes–nothing binding around the middle.

Put yourself on a schedule that feels sane and doable. Get enough sleep; go to bed early if you’re waking up in the middle of the night. Shower in the evening to give yourself time to be sick in the morning if that’s how your symptoms roll. Get up early enough to eat a breakfast you can stomach–scrambled eggs, banana, yogurt, or the like works for me.

Work from home when you can. Get help in whatever areas are possible. Seriously consider if there are deadlines you can kick back or ways to delegate.

Be well, friend. You can get through this and still be the high-achiever that I’m sure you are.

      1. Same here (re fiber) with SIBO. When it flared up, sometimes all that helped was two heaping spoonfuls of metamucil and gulping down tons of water. Otherwise, tried to rest as much as possible, not go hard core with working out. Some yoga stretches felt okay (child’s pose, etc).

  2. I actually got dressed up and had meetings out of WFH today, so OOTD thread?

    – Black athleta endless pants (this is formal enough for these meetings and my field in general)
    – White lacey short sleeved blouse from I think Ann Taylor?
    – Long brown sweater/jacket
    – Dark red rothys

Our CEO was wearing slim black pants, a white blouse, and a brown blazer – pretty basic – but then a statement necklace and earrings. I felt that the necklace and earrings and the non-matching suit went a long way towards making her look more senior and more like a CEO.

    1. I love the black and brown theme here. And I LOVE that you did red with yours!
I’m faffing about at home in jorts and a red tee with PARIS on it. And my beloved flip flops.

    2. Apparently it’s still summer here, so I’m in a Lululemon workout tank top and jersey shorts (WFH and only a couple Zoom meetings). Zero jewelry or makeup, but my hair is washed and gelled, so we’ll call it good.

    3. I’m in a midi MMLF skirt that’s navy with a cream diagonal stripe, a short sleeved burgundy sweater and some comfortable wedges. It’s still hot in the southeast!

    4. Wide-legged navy pants; a slightly cropped cream cardigan buttoned all the way; ruffia-looking woven Mary Jane flats. Red lipstick, which is unusual for me.

    5. In the office. Cream colored drapery pants, white with blue stripes silk button down, blue blazer, cream loafer. I feel good and I’m comfortable.

  3. What’s your rule of thumb for going to the doctor for a possible broken toe? It seems like most cases are safe to rest/treat at home, but mine has a red streak (presumably from the point of impact) and a few of the Dr. Google results say that can be concerning. I’m super busy right now and don’t want to make the time for an appointment for a freaking toe unless I must.

    1. Oh, and to clarify, I called the office and they defaulted to “for new symptoms we recommend an appointment.”

    2. Near me the orthopedic clinics have same-day “walk-in” appointments to get some imaging and work up of inconvenient injuries.

      1. Unfortunately the ones near me don’t take our HMO insurance – we found that out when my husband broke his elbow.

        1. I’m sorry; in that case you may need to start with your insurer nurseline and find out who they want you to see.

          1. Totally – that’s what I initially called (through the office) and then the office said the advice line is being phased out (??) and that new symptoms should get an appointment. Bit frustrating.

          2. That is more than a bit frustrating! My experience with healthcare over the last few years is that I can’t get meaningful answers from insurance about anything, and that I have to handle anything clerical or it just doesn’t happen. I don’t know how people who are seriously ill get by.

Maybe an in-network urgent care would route you appropriately but that doesn’t sound like an efficient approach at all.

      2. I went to the urgent care next to me when I had an obviously broken toe on a Sunday morning. They straightened and taped it, and got me into a boot. I think they might have x-rayed it as well, though I don’t remember.

    3. The red streak is a scrape or it’s under the skin? Under the skin is a sign of a gradually spreading infection that can be seriously… serious.

      1. It’s under the skin, but localized/doesn’t appear to be spreading. The whole thing was a fast incident but I *think* this was the line of impact and it’s not hot/clammy or anything like that. I really wish the advice line weren’t being taken down.

        1. Best test for “doesn’t appear to be spreading” is fine tipped waterproof eyeliner or a sharpie around the area of redness. Any movement, and off to the doc ASAP. Better safe than sorry. And, the test for when to go really should be, whenever people ask this board if they need to go, the answer is probably yes.

    4. Idk how you feel about getting a toe amputated. I don’t love that idea so I would go to the doctor.

    5. Thanks all – as it turns out, we do have access to a 24-7 nurse advice line through my husband’s work that I didn’t know about. She says I should be ok to stay home and treat with ice, etc as long as the streak doesn’t extend. I felt like she took a thorough history and asked all the right questions, so I’m glad I know about this option now. Thanks anyway to those who responded.

  4. Hoping a reader can point me in the right direction. I’m looking for a dress similar to the Hobbs Sophie but in petite size and under $200. (I know Hobbs runs short waisted but shortening the length is an added expense on top of an already expensive dress.) Thanks in advance!

  5. just checked social media and… why are people talking about the rapture and the tribulation? have i missed something?

    1. It’s apparently one of the supposed rapture dates. I haven’t seen anyone posting seriously about it, just people making jokes.

    2. The conservative Christians definitely have some thoughts about that.

IDK, as a progressive Christian, I’d be OK with that outcome. We have done messed up this world.

    3. Apparently some pastor in South Africa made a viral post on TikTok predicting that the rapture is happening tomorrow (9/23).

    4. Apparently it’s some ex-John Hagee acolyte telling all his fundie followers they will be taken up tomorrow (probably).

At this point, I would welcome their departure and be glad we are rid of them.

  6. I am 32or 34DDD depending on brand, usually 34, and trying to get a good workout bra. I have some old Lulu store credit and trying to decide between lululemon Energy Zip-Front Bra *High-Support, B–G Cups or the Energy Bra *High Support, B–G Cups. Ihave looked around and can’t find any reviews comparing the two so would love any thoughts/experiences if anyone has tried either. My local store which is more than an hour’s drive away didn’t have large cup sizes and Id love to not have to bother with returns as I live far.

    1. I prefer the regular one over the zip front. Can’t describe exactly why, but the normal one feels better held in. Sizing is not as sensitive as your normal, non-workout options. I would get the 34 band size, I am normally a 30 and the 32 fits fine for me. There are a lot hooks for options, and I’d rather it be a touch looser than too tight for running.

    2. I recently purchased the zip-front/high-support for the first time, and it’s definitely the best, most supportive sports bra I’ve ever tried! Sizing is a bit tricky though – I am typically a 34 D and I ended up purchasing and keeping a 36C, but the reviews are all over the place in terms of sizing. I did feel like the band size ran small, but I think it’s also designed for a very firm, supportive fit. I ordered online so didn’t try other sizes to compare, but am happy with the 36C.

  7. I have a black-tie optional event coming up next month. I’m searching for an A-line long dress in black, black and gold, or other dark color. It’s a professional event so nothing too revealing. I’m a size 10 and pear shaped. I would like to spend no more than $300. Suggestions?

    1. Check the TJ Maxx website. They get lots of department store evening dresses and sell for really reasonable prices.

  8. Where is the person who said Jimmy Kimmel was canceled because of bad ratings? Clearly not the case given that Disney was apparently desperate to get him back 🤣

    1. I’m genuinely curious why our resident trumper keeps coming back. Do they think they’ll change minds? Are they just inappropriately dopamine seeking? Do they think they’re welcome/right? Maybe it’s just plain ole trolling?

    2. when they took him off the air i had a feeling he’d be back — not only blowback to the company but at that level dude’s got to have absolutely amazing employment contracts and representation, right?

  9. talk to me about personal articles policies — i have my engagement ring, a watch, and a necklace insured (maybe total $20k) but i almost never wear any of the three now, i think the watch might even be broken. can i just let the policy lapse or do i need to affirmatively cancel it? or should i keep it just in case?

    1. You generally need to affirmatively cancel. Seconding the check your homeowners policy. The limits on jewelry are normally pretty low and cumulative (not per piece), so with a theft at your home, you could be capped at 5k total.

  10. we just started (last week) contributing to a roth 401k instead of his 401k — but as near as i can tell the contribution went into the same account as all the previous 401k contributions? that seems wrong…

    1. It’s normal for it to be in the same account. It should be partitioned though. Sometimes you can see that division if you look more closely at the account (for example if I click on my 401k from the Fidelity homepage it says ~15% in Roth and ~85% in regular) but I think that’s not always the case. Sometimes they just do it on the back end.

    2. I had the same question when we started doing this with Fidelity. The helpful posters here said something to the effect that the funds look like they are lumped together on the online interface, but if you check statements (or somewhere else in particular?) you will see the split.

Clearly I never followed up on that tip to see for myself, but it seems normal. I’d call the help line if you can’t figure it out

  11. Husband was hoping for good news related to his job, but instead he just got bad news. I was really hoping to get pregnant, and instead, I just got my period.

I am not at all in the mood for anything re: Rosh Hashanah. I am so upset and angry; I don’t want to socialize with family, friends, or synagogue congregants, don’t want to listen to any sermons, don’t care about the prayers, don’t care about meals. I just want to cry and scream and punch something. Wishes for a good new year feel like such a joke right now.

    1. I’m so sorry. Holidays are the worst when the bad news hits – but at least, there are carbs. Eat the carbs. Don’t discount the value of actually hitting something – whether it’s a driving range or batting cage.

      1. +1 to the carbs. Several of my friends, myself included, are dealing with fertility/pregnancy issues right now. It’s unfair and it sucks. But all the cinnamon and pumpkin spice treats are a nice distraction.

  12. Watching this press conference where the administration pretends they studied autism and found its cause, while shutting down the actual scientists doing actual research on it, is heartbreaking.

    1. there’s apparently one study that found a possible link and 50 others that did not.

as mum to an autistic kid i will tell you i took tylenol with my NT kid when i was pregnant (because it was supposedly healthier than advil), but didn’t touch it when i was pregnant with my ND kid. (i just felt like it wasn’t going to do anything for my headache.)

      1. There’s a broader body of literature on glutathione and autism genetics, which seems inextricably linked to Tylenol metabolism. I think the research is being misrepresented, but “what causes autism?” is more interesting to a broader audience than “what’s best for autistic people?” and this leads to a lot of confusion.

    2. There are so many things wrong with MAHA but I think the craziest one is how much they’re cutting research to scientists who might actually make breakthroughs on things like autism.

    3. Even if there is some promise in that new medication, I wouldn’t trust this admin to do the right things to promote it and study it.

      1. I hope no one with autoimmune antibodies to B9 receptors avoids appropriate treatment on this administration’s account. But children diagnosed with autism deserve thorough medical work up same as any other children.

    4. oh god and it’s worse – they’re going to authorize treatment including coverage with Medicaid — and THEN they’re going to launch “confirmatory trials and new research… including safety studies.” coolio where can i sign my child up?

      full text:
“The change will authorize treatment for children with ASD, with continued use if children show language, social, or adaptive gains. Following the label update for ASD, state Medicaid programs will be able to cover leucovorin for the indication of ASD, in partnership with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). Finally, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) will launch confirmatory trials and new research into the impact of leucovorin including safety studies. “

    5. I just want to know how many people in this admin made millions of dollars either shorting or buying stock of the dr*g companies involved.
