How to Wear Fall 2026’s Trendy Blazer Without Looking Like Dr. Evil

We did a roundup a week or two ago of the blazer shape we're seeing everywhere: the collarless blazer with lots of buttons and (often) a cutaway hem. One of the readers noted that she didn't know how to wear it. Another reader noted that “I feel like an evil world dictator whenever I try to wear it.”
And that's when I saw it: Dr. Evil.
So how DO you wear it when you want to take part in the trend (or already have one in your closet) but don't want to look like, well, Dr. Evil? I have a few ideas…
How to Wear a Collarless Cutaway Blazer Without Looking Like Dr. Evil
#1. Wear It With Wide Leg Pants
Wherever you might have worn a cropped lady jacket a season or two ago, try this jacket instead…. the look is much more of an hourglass, but since most of these jackets have cutaway hems (and the buttons often stop at the waist), the proportions work.
The look works particularly well with wide leg denim (or flares) — it brings down the severity of the look quite a few notches. Know your office, of course.
#2. Play Peekaboo With An Interesting Top Beneath It
Hat tip to Boden for this idea… they've styled it with a stripey Breton shirt beneath it, and only buttoned the top button or two. You could recreate this with something other than stripes, of course, or just have fun with a pop of unexpected color — think a pink T-shirt beneath a red blazer.
(If the blazer you're trying to style is a neutral, an easy way to look polished is to make an outfit with THREE neutrals. You can kind of see this at play with the Boden styling — navy blazer, brown belt and scarf, and white top…)
#3. Play with the neckline.
Another nod to the Boden styling here: I love a good necklace that hits juuuust above the neckline of the blazer. You could also play with a contrasting crewneck, silk scarf, or a blouse with an interesting collar peeking out above the blazer like the ones we rounded up a few months ago.
#4. Know What Not To Wear It With
For example: don't try to accessorize with a large cat and a group of minions. Tacky!
