Splurge Monday’s TPS Report: Versace Crocodile-Print Cardigan

Our daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices.
Wow — today's aspirational piece is this gorgeous wool crocodile-print cardigan and shell from Versace. We love that it's still in the “basic black, wear with anything” family but is so detailed and interesting. We also like that the tasteful animal print adds some liveliness to your basic jewel-neck cardigan. It's (gulp) $2190 for the set at Neiman Marcus, available in sizes 4-12. First comment (sent from NYC) – I don’t think so!
I’m in a fug-or-fab quandary on this one… but I think the shininess is too much for the office. Maybe the cardi over a LBD for the holiday party? In any event — $2190?? there is no possible way that is even CLOSE to the cost of producing this item, and that is coming from someone willing to spend some money on high quality items.
as an aside – it’s “Neiman” Marcus.
Does the site look totally gray & weird to anyone else, or is it just my computer?
It’s not just your computer . . .
I can see Jones NY or Anne Klein knocking this off, and then, yes, I’ll buy (esp. if on sale). I like that it doesn’t scream “animal print” in the way that leopard or cheetah do. It just looks graphic to me.
Was just going to say, I bet I’ll be able to find something similar at Express or someplace in a similar price range.
Agreed; it’s neat, even if the price in this incarnation is jaw dropping.
When the knockoffs come out I will absolutely buy one. It is interesting, but will still go with everything in my closet.
I swear that I’ve seen my mother-in-law wear this exact cardigan before. PASS!
These kind of TPS peices are more of a source of ideas rather than in anyway possible for my life. I do like looking at a peice like this and thinking about what I could do in my price range to approximate this look.
See last week’s discussion on how proper grammar should be your no. 1 accessory.
Maybe it’s me, but I am getting a bit tired of the grammatical comments. I was appalled by the person who corrected Ms. Basil’s post and last week’s post ended up being from a person who speaks English as a second language. This isn’t above the law and people do make mistakes from time to time. I do as well, but this site does not have an “edit” function to allow you to go back and correct.
If you’re going to be pedantic, you should at least be exact; spelling does not equal grammar.
Anyway, poor grammar and spelling on an anonymous internet post are equivalent to wearing sweatpants in your own home. No harm, no foul.
Here, Here! Go find a first year associate to torment!
or not!
LOL.
“hear, hear”
Maybe all this nitpicking on the internet is the hidden cost of lawfirms deferring their first year associates and leaving their senior associates bereft of targets. :-(
I know the point of splurge is to give us idea, not piss us off, but I sometimes can’t help it. I cosign @Cat — this looks like highway robbery to me. Put aside that outrage, I like it, but don’t love it. It’s still just aNOTHER cardigan. Yawn. I’m so over cardigans. Thanks, Michelle O! LOL.
This is a weird piece for me– it’s a sweater set, but most sweater set women I know would be turned off by the shiny, metallic print/graphic.
I hate it. I wouldn’t wear it for 1/100 of a price. And the fact that it costs more than a top of the line, laptop computer is ridiculous.
Putting aside the price, I like that this is a less conservative (but still work appropriate) take on the sweater set. My mom might wear it, but I’d look a lot more hip in it!
I think it’s cute and would buy something similar if the price tag had two digits instead of four. (On a side note, what is up with the skirt the model is wearing? It looks like shiny pleather/ Hefty bag.)
I noticed the skirt, too! My first thought was, “This cardigan is fine, but what is going on with that skirt?!”
It makes me think of a St. John knit worn by fifty-something size-zero ladies-who-lunch. Or, to the other extreme, a Chico’s knock-off.
The price is ridiculous, but I really like it otherwise.
I actually think it’s cool, but the price is absurd
I can’t say it any better than Sharon just did.
One of the characters was wearing this sweater on Brothers and Sisters Sunday night and it looked great on her…a pretty 50-something actress.
I like it. But ditto on the price. I’ll wait for the knockoff.
It’s so funny how one piece can engender such differing reactions! When I saw it, I had an immediate “wow!” reaction – love it. But, while I will make ridiculous splurge purchases, this one’s price is even beyond me. Ah, well. Maybe it will go on sale after the holidays.
my first thought on that picture was “wow, she’s really (unhealthily) skinny, or is she 12?”
