Avert your eyes from the hideous shoes, and feast your eyes on this great skirt from St. John's. Blue is an unusual color for a skirt, but we think St. John's pulls it off here — we like the texture, the horizontal pattern (which we think is small enough that it won't be unflattering) and, yes the fact that it's designer. Actually, neither is that bad . . . but I would not spend that much on either item as anything that memorable would get worn maybe three times a year. I think it’s much wiser to splurge on simple basics, not skirts intended for congresswomen in cobalt blue.

Hate the skirt and love the shoes! They’d look fab with my tux! Or even to jazz up a very simple black cashmere turtleneck and pant combo. I love the idea of St John, but its just screams “old lady with money who’s afraid to take a risk” to me… that said, I think its usually a safe choice for larger women
Black and blue? This’ll look great with a boxy jacket with shoulderpads. And leggings and slouch socks!
I’m sick of the 1980s trend.
I love the color and the fabric and the fit (and I also think the shoes are hideous), but I have to say – I bought a Tory Burch tweed pencil skirt this past spring, and even with just a hint of a horizontal pattern, I can barely pull it off (and actually may not be). Horizontals are just bad, even when they are small.
Yuck! I wouldn’t pay 20.00 for this skirt. Ewww.

I kind of like it. It’s just the outfit as a whole that is throwing me off–hideous is a strong word for the shoes, but they definitely don’t go with this skirt, and neither does the patterned shirt with the striped skirt. If it were just this skirt with black tights, black (more neutral) shoes, and maybe a black turtleneck or something else pretty plain, I think it would be cute. And this doesn’t scream 80s to me, but I was in elementary school at the time so am not really familiar with what people were wearing to work (besides what I’ve seen on movies/TV).
I agree with cleo, the outfit is weird. Don’t like the skirt either, but then again I don’t wear blue.
I have never heard of anyone writing off blue! Is there a particular reason for this?
It doesn’t go with my skin – I have light to medium skin but with olive undertones. So I never wear blue or navy, just black, brown and grey (for neutrals).
As for writing off blue, I think cobalt blue is a color that looks good on very few people (mostly those with piercing blue eyes in the first place). Visually it’s a color that the eye quickly tires of, and style-wise, it is either fully in fashion or fully out of fashion. St John has some elegant pieces but this isn’t one of them.
Like the skirt, like the shoes too, but not together. I’m too through with the “colored skirt+black tights+black booties” look. Fashion trendsetters, you will live to regret this, along with belted sweater coats, plaid shirts, Victorian ruffle blouses (Prince & the Revolution-style) and all the other craptastic trends you try to sell to the unsuspecting public…
I think it would work if it were just above the knee.
This reminds me – I bought basically this same skirt at Nordstrom about fourteen years ago. I should wear it more. It is navy blue and looks like striated velvet but it isn’t. I wear it with a lightweight cotton knit grey top piped in nay blue velvet. I add a nice string of sterling silver “pearls”. It’s a very classy outfit. I can add a light grey tweedy blazer. Navy hose and shoes, or maybe low black boots. Top it off with a blue tweed coat. Perfect!
