I was buying some stuff at the Ulta sale last weekend (namely this and this, both still on sale) and was $6 away from free shipping… I thought it might make a fun conversation: what are the small things that you add to get to free shipping at beauty sites (or any other sites)?

(I do most of my shopping at Nordstrom because I hate paying for shipping! Also worth noting — the big Sephora sale is now open to all, which I haven't even started looking through yet…)

At Ulta I wound up adding the e.l.f. hydration core lip gloss, which I've now bought 4 times. (One of those times was “delightful (mauve),” though, which makes me look dead, so I do not recommend! I've bought “ecstatic” twice (pictured below) — I really think it is similar to Black Honey — but this time decided to try “joyful,” so… finger's crossed.)

Bought twice – “ecstatic” is a good dupe for Black Honey!

We haven't done a “little things” thread in a while, but I think this kind of counts — what small, budget items are easy things to add to your cart to get to the free shipping minimum?

  1. Travel sizes for items that are tricky to DIY from the larger bottle

My go-to sheer polish (or, tbh, other staples that I know I’ll want to refill in the next few months)

  2. I feel like the minis are great both for travel plus they’re usually bestsellers, so if I haven’t tried one before I’ll try that

  3. Staples that I would buy anyhow if the price is good, two of the thing currently in my cart if it’s a consumable that I will use before it goes bad, basics (like socks or undershirts) for my DH. Otherwise I consider holding off until I need enough to get free shipping, or decide whether the cost of shipping still makes the purchase worthwhile to me. However, I am trying to buy less overall and to do more of my shopping locally when I can.

  4. Hats! Scrunchies! Whatever is on clearance that I think I might enjoy but would never pay full price for.

  5. There is no free cheese, and no real free shipping or free returns. Somebody pays, somewhere.

After listening to the Clothes’ horse podcast, I’ve gradually phased out shopping at places that incentivise adding stuff I don’t need, and don’t chase free shipping anymore. For items I buy to have shipped to my home, I buy shipping as well and think of that as part of the item’s cost. It has been very freeing.

The only thing I still get free shipping for, is in-store click and collect orders.

    1. So much this. I live in an older home so we don’t have a pantry or a lot of storage. The buy two get one free items every week make me angry. Just sell me the item at a fair price. I am not carrying three 12 packs of coke into the house and storing it.

    2. This exactly. I’m tired of too much “stuff” and am really mindful about spending these days. If it’s not important enough to buy outright or add to a list to wait, then it’s not important enough to buy. I don’t need a bunch of samples or second-choice toiletries cluttering my bathroom drawers or an extra pair of socks to add to the umpteen others I don’t have room for.
