Love. I’ll be stalking this to go on sale…
DontBlameTheKids
Black Halo is so flattering. I’m stalking, too!
Ellen
Yay! Pricey Monday’s! I love Pricey Monday’s and this sheathe dress, but your right, it is better on Sale, if you can wait. I would buy it today, but my tuchus is way to big to make this work. I think I would need a size 6 b/c it is very fitted and at this point, with MY tuchus, I would have to buy 2 sizes up and it would NOT look good.
I am still walkeing, and I walked in today, and it is getting HOT out! FOOEY! And it is onley MAY! I think by the time it is July, I will be sweateing my tuchus off, which I guess is a good thing, but we need to moove to a place with a shower b/c it is dumb for me to go to NYSC in the morning JUST to shower and change, and then I have to walk here? That is dumm! DOUBLE FOOEY on that. The manageing partner is still lookeing at places, now on 2nd avenue — we are moveing closer to a BUS ride for me, instead of the subway, which can be smelley in the summer with peeople peeing in the subway, it start’s to STINK. TRIPEL FOOEY! I can take a bus, mabye down Second Avenue, or Mabye Lex, but it HAS to be an express bus, otherwise, it take’s to long to go block by block, pickeing up and droppeing off so many peeople! I would perfer a DRIVER, which when I am the manageing partner, will have dad ask for, but for now, it is FITBIT CITY, with tuchus reduction bieng my MAIN GOAL!!! Yay!!!!
The Hockey guy was back in town, texteing me — he wanted to meet me to eat b/f the Ranger game, but I was UPTOWN and was NOT about to go back to PENN STATION AGAIN! I was there yesterday when I came back from LI, and the acountant told me I am OK even if I do not work b/c dad has made “provision’s” for me. That is nice, but I need to worry about not onley me, but my CHILDREN, if I find a guy to Marry me and have children. So it look’s like I will be workeing at least until I find a guy to MARRY me, and then HE can work for all of us. That is why the scruffy guy simply will NOT do. I need a guy who make’s enough for ALL of us, so that I can stay home and tend to all thing’s DOMESTIC — I am sure I do NOT want to do anything with the family finance’s. But for now, I have to start first with getting a guy to date me who does NOT just want sex. That is probabley the biggest challenge of my life, b/c every guy just want’s me to take my clothe’s off for them and that is NOT what I was taught in school to do. FOOEY!!!

Anyone want to help me find a dress? The dress code is “summer farm wedding cocktail” (wedding is in Vermont in June). I’d love something in yellow (bright enough that it won’t look white in pictures), but blue, purple or pink would also be okay. I’m 28, don’t want anything that reads too “old,” especially given that it’s not a super formal wedding. Would also like something that won’t make me feel overheated or restricted in movement. I’m more or less an hourglass figure, maybe a little wider on the bottom, and somewhat busty.
I ordered this dress and thought it was adorable and flattering, but my mom said the material looked cheap so I returned it. (Link to follow)

This isn’t a dress, but given the dress code I think this would be very cute in yellow, coupled with another brightly colored tucked in tank (aqua, pink, etc.). I have been stalking this skirt but have yet to pull the trigger because I don’t have the occasion to wear it, but you do!

love that skirt! not sure if I’d feel like it was fancy enough for a wedding though (even if it is on a farm)… or at least, I can’t picture it with a top being fancy enough, but open to suggestions on that front! Also, maybe it’s just me but I often feel like skirts that sit at the waist aren’t flattering on me because I have “high” hips (short torso, long legs, hips seem to start higher than most people)… does that make sense at all?
Mpls
I’m also short waisted – so all those fit/flare/skater dresses with the higher waistline are actually AT my natural waist. Size up the skirt so it sits at the hips instead of your natural waist. It shifts the proportions down. Although I’ve also found that gathered skirts just aren’t very flattering – A line or pencil is better suited to that technique.
Baconpancakes
Jumping on this one – I realized this weekend my entire wardrobe is business and formal/cocktail, with an appropriate number of super casual shorts/shift dress outfits thrown in for after work and going to the farmers’ market on weekends. Girl needs some sundresses!

Also, short dress or maxi dress or does it not matter?
LilyB
Would prefer something above the knee!
Adele
Just a word of unsolicited advice: don’t go more than an inch or two above the knee, it always looks odd at weddings to see someone in a v. short dress. Something about weddings just calls for a more conservative length — maybe the fact that the spotlight should be on the bride and not the guest. I should think this would be especially the case at a VT outdoor wedding. Anyway, just my two cents. That and wear wedges — heels will sink in to the grass!!!
Given the dress code description, I actually think a breezy maxi dress could look incredibly chic, but to each their own. If you want shorter and yellow, I think this one is lovely: http://tinyurl.com/mdg5bo7
LilyB
thanks for the advice, I think you’re totally right, and I LOVE the dress you picked out- might pull the trigger on that!
Ciao, pues
love this too! iam so not in the market but am loving these ideas.
emeralds
Disagree with the dress must be an inch or less above the knee advice. Don’t show your lady garden, but…yeah. Weddings do not require the same dress length as your office. My opposing two cents :)
TheElms
What about something like this ? Seems about the right level of formality and you could add a wider belt to cinch in the waist a bit more.

Have you ever used rent the runway? If you don’t foresee wearing this dress too many times, check them out.
I’ve started renting dresses from them as my ‘semi-formal’ dress collection got out of hand and I almost never re-wore more than twice. For $100 you can get a REALLY nice dress. some are $50 or $75. their customer service is fantastic, and their chat stylists have always found great options for me.
LilyB
thanks for the suggestion- I’ve used RTR several times and probably will again, but I’m taking a break for now because while I think their service is great and it’s a great concept, I’ve found that I’m never that happy with how I look in the garment- even though one of the two sizes has always fit, I think it’s because I can’t try it on beforehand and I feel like I rarely feel like a dress suits my body type.

Hotel Help?
Hello Ladies! The SO and I want to go to the New England Aquarium and Museum of Science in Boston as part of our vacation this year and are thinking the best plan of attack would be a day at each and a hotel for the night. Does anyone have any recommendations for hotels close to these places? Our vacation is the second week in June and the entire week is free, so it doesn’t matter which day (we were thinking maybe Sunday into Monday for the best hotel rates, but are completely flexible). I was eyeing the Langham which has a 200 rate for Sunday into Monday and which I’ve been at for a work meeting before, but am open to just about anything!
snowy
The Langham is definitely walkable to the Aquarium but not so sure about the MoS. Might be kind of a trek (though Hubway would be a good option for something like that, or the T obviously). I’ve never stayed there but worked right across the street; the park in front of the Langham is really cute in the spring/summer. On the weekend the area would be dead (especially something like Sunday morning) because it’s the Financial District.
I think the Langham also has a rooftop pool – which is kind of a fun perk in Boston!
Anon
I’ve stayed there. Yes, the area is completely dead on weekends. Hotel is fine but I prefer an older-feel (like the Omni Parker House) – the interior common spaces of the Langham are super modern.
BB
Honestly, downtown Boston is so small that you can pretty much walk everywhere if you’re up for it. It’s only ~30 minutes walking from the Aquarium to the Museum, or you can take the T.
CHJ
I agree with the PPs that the area around the Langham will be very quiet on Sunday. If you want more activity around you, you could also check out the Ames, the Millenium, or the Harbor Hotel. The Liberty Hotel is also very weird and cool, and walking distance to the Museum of Science along the river, but the immediate area around it is not that interesting (dominated by MGH hospital).
Dulcinea
I have been to the Aquarium several times, and I don’t think there’s enough to do there to spend a whole day…even if you spend quite a while looking at the harbor seals outside.

Argh. I saw a woman this morning with the COOLEST sandals and now I can’t find them on the interwebs! Anyone want to help?
They were black flat studded sandals, one strap straight across the ball of the foot and then kind of a gladiator back with more studs on the heel, and looked like they tied at the front.
Kind of like these but there was only one strap at the front and the studs were more blingy, maybe?

Anyone have recommendations for a light-weight shaping/smoothing garmet that isn’t a huge Spanx type thing?
I wear skirts and dresses to work all the time, but I always wear controltop nude hose or tights – nothing crazy to suck me in, but definitely to smooth and shape slightly. I find it makes skirts and dresses look and fall much better. I asked a question about smart casual and people said wear dresses! So I’d like to get a few dresses for nice casual wear BUT I feel so strange and very uncomfortable/lumpy wearing just normal bikini underwear under a casual dress, especially if it’s a jersey type material. I’m pretty sure wearing nude hose with casual wear is a bad look (despite my absolute love for them lol). Anyone have recommendations for really light shaping garments – more smoothing? Not full-leg shorts or up to my b****bs or anything, just a boyshort/underwear type garment??? Thanks ladies!!
Lyssa
You could try cutting the legs off of some old hose or tights. I’ve not tried it for under dresses, but I have tried cutting the feet off of hose to wear under pants in the winter but still wear open toed shoes (yes, I know that’s weird, but my legs are more cold-sensitive than my feet), and it works surprisingly well. You’d think that the material would just fall apart, but it doesn’t.
DC Association
Jockey makes something along these lines called Skimmies or something similar. Doesn’t really compress but it smooths out. They come in a variety of colors, too.

Jockey Skimmies? They make a short inseam version that works pretty well.

Jockey skimmies. I just converted to them for that exact purpose a few weeks ago. Love them.

I have a few of these and they’re all I wear under skirts and dresses: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009M2URR8/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I bought my first pair at Macy’s but I don’t see the shorts on their site. I’m not sure if this goes higher or lower than you’d prefer, but it’s not constricting at all and the legs are pretty short–just enough to stay put. The material is thin but smoothes everything and is really comfortable.
I’m seeing a lot of boyshorts in the “Customers who bought this item” banner, too, so maybe you can find some light shaping options there.
Aggie
Flexees also makes a similar product line called weightless comfort. I prefer the mid thigh to the boy short as they extend almost the same length as control top pantyhose. They are thinner than skimmies and are laser cut at the leg rather than a band.
anonyomous
I love commando underwear. They have something called smooth not stuffed, which is describing exactly what you want: http://www.barenecessities.com/Commando-Panties_catalog_nxs,32,vendor,15444.htm.
I also really like their “better than nothing” girl short for silk dresses because it offers coverage but NO VPL.
BB
+1 for Commando. I have their slip and cami and the material is awesome.
anon-oh-no
spanx also makes a number of different control strengths — i.e, super, medium, etc. and they make a panty that has some control across the tummy, but its not like shorts you pull on.
NbyNW
Yes, love Assets – they are just like the control-top part of panty hose. Doesn’t show through most skirts/dresses and smooths without smothering.
Hel-lo
Another vote for Assets. I size up, so it’s not so “stuffing”-like, but still smoothing.
I'm Just Me
I wear Jockey skimmies under dresses, they have a longer leg style and a shorter leg style. Check Amazon, Kohl’s, etc for them. They aren’t really slimming, just smoothing, and help eliminate panty lines.

Here’s my idea (it won’t go to your tps email…for 2 weeks now)
The Hunt: Fit and Flare Work Dresses
For those of us hourglass shapes, it’s been a difficult time finding dresses with the dominance of the sheath style out there. Of course, with some fit-and-flare options finally showing up in stores (after 2 years on runways only), it’s exciting!
However, it is hard to find work-appropriate items that don’t look like one is going to a summer picnic, channeling Lucy and Ethel, and/or trying to go to Laura Ingalls Wilder’s prairie.
Help in locating work appropriate items, and commentary on what to look for and/or how to put a blazer/cardi with them would be very welcome…I know you love sheaths and may have the body for them, but there are those of us who are simply unable to do that.
Many thanks & Congratulations on finding an editor,& launching a companion site, and the second little one to come – maybe a ‘rette? (My you’ve been busy!)

I have the chancelry dress and after hemming (alot) it is fab! Been hard to find anything for several years though…and the ponte fit and flare last year reminded me of TWA uniforms from the 1960s in a good way but the fabric just sagged so much through the day, I ended up giving them all away.
Here’s to Boden doing better for hourglasses soon? At least they are finally describing the cut of the dress in their descriptions. Tired of sending lovely things in great patterns back…
Hoping Kat and the fellow readers here will point us in the right direction.
At Nordie’s I’ve been doing well with the Eliza J brand, attending to length though.

So let’s talk real for a second. How do you ladies deal with chafing (thighs specifically)? It seems to be worse for me this year than previously (I gained some weight but I was never exactly skinny so I’m not sure if that is why), but I’m wondering what others do? I’ve tried Vaseline, tried little shorts (which roll up on their own) under dresses, what else?
Brit
I just bought a pair of Bandelettes and they seem to work well. They started to roll on Friday, but I hand washed them on Saturday and haven’t tried them again since, so it may just have been that they needed to be washed.

Body glide…I used the stuff in a tube vs/ the deodorant like rub on chub. Loved it. Lots of walking and hiking and climbing in many different layers and not a chafe in sight! Plus that the stuff in the tube (like lotion) had no smell.

Body Glide is great stuff. I also have the Monistat Ant-Chafing but Body Glide lasts only about 4-5 hours for me and, per-use, it’s a lot more expensive than Body Glide.
Pink
Monistat anti-chafing. It’s a life changer. Available at CVS and online. Also use on feet to prevent blisters. Apparently the chemical is the same thing that they use in face primers, so some people use it as an expensive primer.

As suggested in the other thread, jockey skimmes are a lifesaver for this. They don’t roll up if you size right.

Assets/Spanx style things, or pantyhose with the legs cut off. BodyGlide is so much better than vaseline!
Also, don’t try to lose weight until you lose this. Some women are just shaped to have their thighs rub together, no matter how much weight they lose. Some of us mature into it. :)

I really love the hypocrisy of that STF U [this-site] blogger.
She cites, from reblogging, an Arab proverb “The mouth should have three gatekeepers. Is it true? Is it kind? And is it necessary?”
Well if she actually adhered to that, her entire site wouldn’t qualify under that second gatekeeper. She’s certainly not kind. And we can certainly argue that a lot of her sniping posts are not really necessary.
Her angrily defensive answer to criticism (“to Sarah”), included a hashtag that read: if you don’t like my blog don’t read it. More hypocrisy! If she hates this site so much, why has she spent her entire blog responding to it.
She cracks me up — I bet for all her sniping at us for being privileged, ra cist, blah blah blah, she’s completely and utterly ineffective at making real change in the world on these issues because she doesn’t want to tackle the real demons. She likes the soft target of this generally polite website.

I think it’s OK to have a snarking site, but it seems the one being mentioned isn’t as sharp as the blogger would like it to be. As it turns out when you venture into the wide world of the internet, you run into silly, stupid, hateful, or weird people. When I used to get really mad about the stuff people posted on here I took a step back and stopped reading. I think you need to do that with stfu

Today’s STFU post did made me chuckle too.

Tumblr is mostly for teeange navel-gazing and posting pictures of pretty things. It is not a bastion of maturity. I think it is safe to say that anyone who feels the need to create a Tumblr to make fun of people is not someone you should take seriously. It’s a reminder that that kind of behavior is not what you want to emulate professionally or personally.

+1. There’s not enough eyerolls in the world for that site, but no need to get worked up about it.
Moving to New York
I’m moving to NYC for the first time. Curious where people live and what type of rent you’re paying. I’m looking for a 2 bedroom on the UWS, probably 70th+. Is $1600-1800/month/ person (2 people total) reasonable, or do I need to totally adjust expectations? Thanks!
preg 3L
An average 2-BR on the UWS (72nd-110th) is $4900/month, according to StreetEasy.com (which I find is reliable).
preg 3L
FWIW, I lived on the UES in 180 sq ft and paid $1800/month.
LilyB
how does one live in 180 sq ft? seriously, I’m really curious and would love to hear how you made it work. was there a kitchen?

Im guessing she means her room size

I have two people + dog + cat in 350. I think I could do 180 by myself. NYT often does articles on people who eat take out and keep their sweaters in the oven.
Batgirl
I wouldn’t be surprised if it was a tiny studio with a one burner stove–some people have pied a terres like that here.
preg 3L
Yes there was a kitchen; it was a studio that had a kitchen along one wall. It was roughly 16′ x 11′.
NOLA
I once lived in a converted hotel room. It was a studio, like preg 3L’s with a kitchen along one wall, a hotel-sized bathroom (so decent sized) and a fairly large walk-in closet. I cooked a lot in that apartment because the kitchen was right there. I had shelves along one wall and a mattress on the floor, tiny TV. It worked because I lived alone, worked a lot, and drove to see my mother every other weekend (to support her in her cancer treatment).

It really depends on the kind of building (doorman vs. non vs. walkup, etc), whether you’re using a broker (might help you find a deal, but you’ll also be paying 15% commission of a year’s rent which in your case would be around $5K so it only makes sense to me if a) someone else is paying or b) you intend to stay a long time), and how big of an apartment you actually need (i.e., do the bedrooms need to be equal size, how big does the living space need to be, etc.). This sounds incredibly depressing but a lot of times what people do in NYC is get a big 1 bedroom and convert part of the living room into a 2nd bedroom. This is easy enough to do with a temp. wall but works best if you have an L shaped living room.
I don’t think $3600/mo. is unreasonable but it’s not going to get you your pick of apartments either, especially as May-October is peak rental season. Your best bet to avoid paying a broker is to call management companies directly.
To get more value for your money, you may want to look at Morningside Heights (a bit further uptown by Columbia University but still on the UWS) or all the way across town on the far Upper East Side (Along East End, York, and 1st Avenue you can find some of the best deals).

As usual! :)

Beware of the crowded 6 train if considering the UES.

Thanks everyone! Will take a look at streeteasy and Morningside Heights

It can be done. We live very close to your target area, and pay $2200/month for two of us (i.e., we each pay $1100/month) for a 500 sq ft one bedroom. We have found very lovely listings for $3500 for 2 bedrooms also nearby. However, we do not have a doorman.
anon-oh-no
I lived in the Financial District about 7 years ago and paid $4200 for a 2 bedroom — a comprable place on the UWS was $6900. My 1 bdroom (750 sq. ft) on the UWS was almost $3000. I have a close friend that currently lives in a convertable 3 bdroom on the UWS and pays more than $8000. All of these buildings were/are doorman buildings.

I know this isn’t really what you asked and feel like I’m a broken record on this point, but I love my old borough, so: if you can’t find something you like on the UWS, consider Astoria or Long Island City in Queens if you’re working in midtown (It’s my old borough because I left New York entirely, not because I moved to another one). It’s a really easy commute to midtown, and they’re great neighborhoods (avoid the area around Queensborough Plaza, as it’s still a bit sketchy). I’m convinced Astoria is the best value in the city in terms of price, apartment size, and location. LIC has gotten pricier lately, but it still good. Downside of it is the 7 train is shut down a lot because they’re “upgrading.” My BF and I paid $2050/month total for our 2-story apartment in Astoria (weird design, but 715 sq. ft., 1.5 baths). It was awesome.
Nonny
+1 Astoria is also an option. Harlem has become very pricey, or I’d have suggested there. There are also some good deals to be found in the W 140s and 150s.
UWS
Having just completed a 2br search on the UWS (and ultimately decided on Brooklyn for more space/neighborhood), your price range is do-able but you will definitely have to make sacrifices – 3 flr + walk-up, no laundry, no doorman, poor light, oldish kitchen/bathroom etc. Certainly easier without pets. It’s helpful to outline your deal breakers in advance and re-adjust as needed.
Streeteasy is a great place to start to get a sense of the inventory. If you want to avoid a fee, do call the management companies directly, however, you will likely be looking at larger buildings vs brownstones, if that matters. It may also be worth talking to a broker at the start to get a sense of the market and see a few places so that you can get a better sense of your needs. In the end, I ended up getting lucky off Craigslist and renting straight from the owner after weeks of working with a broker, but you have to have the patience to weed through the muck.
Also, you need to be prepared for the joy that is renting in NY, meaning:
– generally hard to start a search more than 4 weeks in advance of your move. Inventory moves fast
– Have all your paper work in order: letter from employer verifying salary and employment, past 3-4 pay stubs, 2013 tax documents, savings/checking account balance, letter of reference from past landlord. not every landlord will require all of this, but I used all of it across several applications
– Be ready to pounce once you see something. Again, inventory moves fast. If you see something you like, you should be prepared to put in an application on the spot or the very least the same day (hence having your paperwork ready). And even then, I didn’t get everything I applied for.
Pink
Pouncing — We were the second couple to check out a place and literally committed to an application 10 minutes before the third family to check out the place asked to apply (there were also in the apartment at the same time). That and the fact that we had really solid paperwork and financials is how we got our apartment (via streeteasy).
I do have a wonderful broker who could help. I saw large studios as low as 1800 in Murray Hill with my broker for my prior apartment. Leave me an e mail if you’d like his info.

Reposting because I’m in moderation:
I have to plan a bachelorette party in NYC for about 15 mid-twenty year olds. The bride wants to go to a couple of fun, somewhat trendy bars (maybe with a little dancing) and somewhere delicious for dinner (she is a pescatarian). She doesn’t want any kind of str*pper situation. I’m hoping to get the whole night planned for around $250 per person. Does anyone have any recommendations for good spots to go? I’m hoping to stay in the downtown area, like around soho/tribeca/meatpacking. Any help would be SO appreciated!
NOLA
FYI – you were in moderation for the e t t e at the end of the word, not necessarily for str!pper.

Ahh that makes more sense. I forgot about that! Thanks!

Beauty & Essex? And then R Bar later if things get sloppy.
roses
I’ve only been to the one in Chicago, but Beauty Bar is in NY too and it’s tons of fun. Earlier in the day they play retro-y music and it’s usually on the quieter side so you can chat as you drink and get manicures, and later at night it’s like a dance club. http://thebeautybar.com/
