  1. I’m excited that the J Crew sale didn’t change since I ordered a new suit yesterday with the same discount. Fingers crossed that it fits!

  2. Okay. I went shopping crazy! Bought a purse and a dress from Saks and a suit from Express. Can totally justify the dress (needed for a bachelorette party and was on a great sale) and the suit (wear them everyday) but the purse was a total splurge, although it was more than half off. Now, how do I explain it to my husband?

  3. Awesome. Just bought three pairs of Cole Haan shoes – Violet Air 90 in black, Lainey Chain Wedge 55 in brown, and Air Talia Belt Shoe Boot in black – all things I’d had my eye on – for a grand total of $233.97 (less than one pair regular price!).

Ginger, look at the banners on the front page – the Cole Haan one will come up eventually.

    1. I’m so conflicted. Do I get the 2.5 inch heel or the 3.5 inch heel? I’m afraid the lower heel will look matronly, but I do not want to contradict the comfort level of the Cole Haan with extra height. I’m a fairly competent heel wearer FWIW. What about sizing? I feel like I recall discussions about going up a size?

      1. Depends on what you want to wear them for? Work or fun? Walking around/being on your feet or standing/sitting around and looking awesome?
Personally I don’t think 2.5 inches is a matronly heel height, but I also have smaller feet (6.5) and heels over 3 inches are genuinely difficult to walk in for me for any extended period of time.

      2. Cole Haans run narrow, so people sometimes size up. I have narrow feet so I take my regular size. I’d say if you tend to run in between sizes, go for the larger one.

I had the same conflict over the heel heights and ended up going with the higher one. However, I have a couple of pairs in the mid-heel height and they don’t look particularly matronly.

    2. Me too, I managed to restrain myself to 1 pair only ! Got the Air Violet Pump 90 in textured black for $72. I have another Cole Haan Air pumps with lower heels, hoping these higher heels are still comfortable.

Ladies I seriously need to stop shopping now, my wallet has taken a hit. I finally bit the bullet and bought my first iPad on Friday, a new winter coat after 5 years, a lulumelon yoga pant for sticking to my workout schedule for 6 months and a bunch of sweaters from macys . Plus finally I found the most awesome fitting black woolen pants with lining for my curvy body shape 40% off at Ann Taylor and just couldn’t stop myself.
I keep saying most of the stuff are basics that I need for looking professional at work (except for ipad or yoga pants).
No more shopping for myself till spring/summer !

  4. TJ: I’m looking to buy cufflinks for the BF. I’d like to keep it under $50 and interesting, he works in tech and will be wearing the cufflinks to an office party. Any suggestions?

    1. I like Token & Coins for interesting cufflinks, prices vary, but they have some in the $75-85 range – for instance L&T has several for $85 plus 25% off today with promo code CYBER. I have gotten the Buffalo Nickel ones as a gift before and they were a big success. http://www.lordandtaylor.com/eng/brands/tokens-coins

For something more interesting, try etsy – I bet you could find something perfect for him.

      1. Ha, my post about these is awaiting moderation!
Google Mental Floss cufflinks – it links to an article with some great recommendations.

      2. That one is hilarious!

I’ll be browsing Etsy tonight (how did I forget about that site?!)

    2. Posting late, but I’ve had great good luck with retrocufflinks dot com dot au, if your BF is good with vintage. There’s a big selection running from classic to kitschy (the kitschy ones are fun if you can find a shape with special meaning for you) and there are plenty of options at AUD 25 – 35 which will come in under USD 50 with postage. I’ve found the mailing very reliable – successful deliveries for friends across the globe.

  5. White House Black Market has 30% off site wide, plus 5% on top of that if you are on their mailing list. I just ordered a bunch of stuff from their “sale” section and made out!

  6. Is it just me, or is the name of this place just plain irritating? I guess they couldn’t call it Tory Burch Knock-Offs.

    1. I find the font used on the C. Wonder window to be tacky looking. Like a clearance-sale Zapf Chancery.

  7. Threadjack and a plea for advice.

We took my 10-year-old daughter to get her ears pierced this weekend – she has been so eager to get them pierced and did everthing we asked to “earn” the right to do so (being responsible for the cats, reading a certain number of books). But the piercing didn’t turn out right and now I’m just sick about it and can’t stop thinking about it. I’m hoping some of you may have experience/advice for me on how to handle.

Here’s the problem: one of her piercings is a little further up and to the outside than the other. It’s not much and it’s not noticeable unless you really look at them, but friends have confirmed that there’s definitely a difference. I think if we were to get that one ear re-pierced, we would have to let it heal for 3-4 weeks because the holes would be so close to each other there would be some risk of them tearing and making one big hole. She really doesn’t want to do this, because she doesn’t want to have just one earring in for a month when she was SO excited to get them pierced, but if it’s the right thing to do, I’ll insist. But here’s the rub. One of the reasons the holes are in different places in her ears is because apparently one ear is bigger than the other (never noticed it before, but now it seems really obvious to me). So to make the earring line up with each other as you look at her from the front, one has to be higher on the ear than the other. Here’s my question: is it more important that the earrings line up with each other as you look at the face, or is it more important that they be in the same relative place on the ears (i.e. the center of the lobe)? I don’t want to force her to take them out and redo them only to make the problem worse.

I know this doesn’t seem like a big deal, but I’m really losing sleep over this because it’s a decision that will have lifelong (if admittedly minor) consequences. I would so appreciate any advice you can give… Thank you.

    1. I think it’s more important that the earrings line up as you look at her face, but that’s my personal preference. Given that she will be wearing earrings for life, I would take the earrings out, let the holes close, and try again in a few months once they are fully healed.

    2. First off – is she aware of this?

It seems like this is probably pretty common – people have different sized ears, feets, b00bs, whatever, resulting in this problem for some people. I would not imagine that anyone would ever notice unless they were told to look for it. Almost no one is completely symetrical, but you never notice it on anyone but yourself.

      1. She knows I think they’re misaligned and she sees it but doesn’t think it’s a big deal. But she’s a pretty laid-back kid, with zero perfectionist tendencies. So I’m afraid she’s saying they’re fine because she doesn’t want to deal with the process of letting them heal and having them out for a month, without looking at the long-term picture.

        1. Woah, you sound like that mom that rags on everything and needs their kid to be perfect. This was a gift for the child, if she’s happy let it be.

If it bothers her as she gets older it’s not that hard to get ears repierced.

Chill out, before you send this kid to therapy for years. What’s wrong with you imposing impossible perfectionist standards on her, especially for something as minor and nonimportant as earings. Jesus christ crazy lady.

      2. So funny… I am wearing tiny studs today and noticed that my ears are definitely not evenly pierced. The only reason I noticed is the cartilage in relation to the stud is different. There is the same amount of lobe under each stud, if that makes sense. So I came to the conclusion that whoever pierced my ear 20+ years ago probably used the outline of the lobe as a guide.

Either that or my lobes have shifted as I’ve gotten older. Either way, honestly, I have never noticed until today. Most of the time I wear dangly earrings that draw attention to the earrings, not the hole in the lobe.

        1. My earrings shifted as I got older. It’s possible. I had them pierced at 11 but at 30, three different people took me aside and told me (very nicely) that my earrings were not symmetrical on my ears. After the third person, I stopped wearing earring for 2 months and made an appointment for a new set of holes (the old holes still haven’t completely closed–make sure you can identify which holes are “new”).

    3. In terms of safety, it’s more important that they be in the same place in the lobe. If the current piercing is close enough to the inside of her lobe that it’s not a risk of tearing if she’s wearing big dangly earrings, honestly, I would not bother. People looking at her (for the rest of her life) will not notice the 1-3 millimeter difference in where they are placed in her ears. They simply will not.

If the piercing is too close to her ear edge to be safe, then let it heal and close up and then when you get it re-pierced, have it done with a NEEDLE to avoid more scar tissue/trauma to the ear. Go to a piercing parlor or tattoo shop if need be. The needle creates a very small hole through her ear (whereas piercing guns ‘punch’ through with a blunter point) and it actually heals way faster and cleaner (I had my first ear piercing done by gun, the next 2 sets done by needle) with far less scar tissue.

But really, no one will notice. No one.

      1. Agree with this. NO one will notice. Its almost a right of passage I think. At least 5 of my friends will tell you their holes are uneven. the long term picture is really minor.

If she is happy, tell her they look great, and give yourself permission to relax!

    4. My parents got my ears pierced when I was a baby and the holes are drastically in different places (to my eye). I find it more noticable with large posts earrings (which I still tend to wear most days to work anyway because that’s just my style), but anyway, I’m not worse for the wear. If I point it out some people notice, but its looks fine in photos and with most earrings.

So anyway, I agree with others, don’t worry about it!

    5. Have friends noticed it on their own, or just confirmed the difference when asked?

I currently have two holes in each lobe. The first are pretty even (done in a doctor’s office with a needle), and the second are not (done in a doctor’s office with a gun). It’s really not a big deal. The only time I notice is when I am wearing studs in both sets of piercings, and I have never had someone comment on it (although people do see it if I point it out to them).

      1. Just confirmed the difference when asked. But I’m not sure anyone would volunteer it without me asking…

    6. I got my second holes pierced when I was around 13. They were slightly crooked and fairly obvious because you could tell with earrings in both ears. My mom didn’t insist that I take them out and a year or so later I realized I didn’t like how crooked they appeared when I was wearing studs in both ears. I took them out to let them close only to discover that they would no longer heal up. 15+ years later, I still have second holes that I’ll never wear earrings in.

    7. This may sound strange, but I would call a good piercing studio in your area, and get recommendations from the shop owner there. I had botched ear piercings growing up, and now have no regular holes! To me, a piercer is much more clean and efficient. But that is just my opinion.

  8. Talbots has 50% one full price item. Their suiting options are great for plus sizes.

  9. Can I just say that I went into the new Athleta where I live and was totally unimpressed? I had even applied for (and turned down) a second job there when they opened (I was thinking Yay! extra holiday money! and then overtime at my current and better paying/benefitted position kicked into high gear, and the second job looked much less enticing) and was so excited to have a store here, but when I went into the store this past weekend, I was less than impressed. I looked at everything, only found one functional item that I liked for running, and specifically was looking for ear warmers/head band for running in the frigid west temps. The fabric was so cheap and thin and just not what I expected for the price. I was flabbergasted. Has anyone else had this experience?

    1. I concur 100%. I went in to return some things I’d ordered online and was completely underwhelmed. I actually think that it made me less likely to shop there in the future.

    2. A little late here, but I’m a huge fan of Skirt Sports. I cycle, so I haven’t tried any of their running-specific stuff, but what I do have I love. YMMV, but they have some good sales going right now too, so it may be worth a look.

    3. I have a few things from there that I like (Hana run shorts, and a few tops from 3-4 seasons ago), and one dress that I bought this summer that I really like.

Most recently, I tried a pair of gloves that were (1) $40 and (2) ripped in three separate places along the seams after one wear. Fortunately their return policy is great (even after you wear something), but I’m glad I live near a store so that I can check out items in person before buying.
